OAXACA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (OAX)
OAX is a small, single terminal international airport.
Airlines that fly into OAX include: United, Aeromexico, American, Volaris and VivaAerobus.
When booking flights, especially those involving a connection, add enough transfer time. OAX is prone to delays.
FLIGHT CONNECTIONS
Connections are typically through Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Houston (IAH) and Mexico City (MEX).
If connecting through Mexico City, be mindful that checked luggage needs to be reclaimed during the connection. This will require your luggage to be re-checked.
ARRIVAL AT OAXACA (OAX)
Passengers arriving on international flights will encounter a small 'customs' check. Important note: hold onto the customs forms throughout your entire stay in Oaxaca as they may check those again when departing.
AIRPORT ATM
Upon exiting customs there are a number of ATMs. It's our experience, these are the best place to get cash at a favorable exchange rate. Most places in Oaxaca accept credit cards, but here and there cash will come in very handy.
TAXIS
Upon exiting customs, inside the terminal, you will find a stand labeled 'taxis'. You need to check in at this stand to get transportation to your accommodation. You will pay at the stand and bring the receipt to the authorized taxi drivers waiting outside. Rides to hotels will be approximately 500 pesos. Tipping is not required.
Oaxaca is a pleasantly walkable city to explore. But, if you want to explore further, and we encourage you to do so, we recommend the yellow taxis over the red ones or asking your hotel to arrange a taxi for you. Most taxis won't use a meter so its best to agree on a price with your driver prior to taking the ride to avoid any surprises in cost. Sidenote, Uber and Lyft do not exist here.
