Hi everyone and thank you for taking the time to read our love story. You are very important to us and we appreciate you.&nbsp; Our love story begins like all the great old love stories, with the world in the middle of a pandemic. As two single people living in Toronto at that time it was very difficult to meet people and our paths may never have crossed but as luck would have there was a brief respite as the world seemed to open for but a moment where we were once able to go out and have fun with friends again. And fun we had.&nbsp; Our beloved friend Vik had organized a wine tour down to Niagara wine country. Sam had been on a few of these wine tours but it was Laurel’s first time. Their dearest friend Kaitlin, brought Laurel along last minute when her previous Saturday plans had fallen through. It was a Halloween themed wine tour, so everyone had to come dressed in a costume. Sam dressed as a fighter pilot from the movie Top Gun and Laurel was able to quickly put together an adorable bear costume. Sam’s eyes were drawn to her in her cute outfit and at the end of the tour he bravely asked for her number to take her out.&nbsp; We arranged a date the very next weekend. And the first date was quickly followed by the second, then a third and soon we were inseparable.&nbsp; We quickly fell in love and moved in together and began intertwining our lives with dreams of adventure and travel. This culminated a year after our first date where Sam proposed to Laurel while on vacation in Miami on what could be described as a story book proposal on the beach at sunset after a rainstorm with rainbows in the sky.&nbsp;Shortly after they both sold their respective condos and bought their dream house and adopted their puppy Luna who has filled their hearts and home with love, affection and a few puppy messes but wouldn’t change it for the world.&nbsp; Since travel, food, and entertaining are so important to us the decision to have our wedding in Italy was a no brainer. And we are excited to see you in Umbria, high in the mountains overlooking the vineyards and olive groves.&nbsp; Ciaoxx L&amp;S

GETTING TO THE HOTEL For guests who are not renting a car, for transportation to the hotels we are looking into organizing a shuttle/ride service. This will be available for the Sunday and Monday from Perugia Rail Station with return service to Perugia on the Friday. Perugia Rail Station (Perugia Fontivegge Railway Station) services trains to and from both Rome and Florence in addition to other cities.&nbsp;There will also be shuttles available between the two hotel sites.

TRAVEL Nearest Airport is&nbsp;San Francesco d’Assisi Airport&nbsp;which is Umbria International Airport and is located just outside of Perugia. This airport has seasonal service via British Airways (London - Heathrow), Ryanair (London - Stansted, Barcelona, Vienna, etc.) and Transavia (Rotterdam - The Hague). Leonardo da Vinci - Fiumicino Airport located in Rome. Serviced by all International Carriers with direct flights from Toronto, Calgary, Perth, and Sydney. The drive to Perugia is 2 hr 45 min by car. Florence Airport.&nbsp;Serviced by a few International Carriers with connections through Athens, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Vienna, etc. The drive to Perugia is 2 hr 45 min by car. The FIFA World Cup is being held in Paris from July 24th - August 10th 2024 which may impact travel in and around France. Van/Car pick-up can be arranged from Rome, Florence, or Assisi&nbsp;at a cost to you but we recommend taking the fast train to Perugia (2.5 hrs) and then we will come and pick you up in a van at no charge (45 min drive). ATTIRE What is the dress code? Italy is known to be HOTTTT in the summer so please leave your formal attire at home - think semi-formal/cocktail attire. WEDDING DETAILS The wedding and the reception will be outdoors. The site is a short walk from the hamlet (shuttle is available) so chose your footwear accordingly or bring a change of shoes. While we love your little ones, our wedding is going to be an adults-only event so that everyone can relax and enjoy the festivities. TRAVELLING IN ITALY IN AUGUST National Holidays - August 15, 2024 Assumption Day is a national holiday in Italy meaning that there are processions in towns and most businesses are closed. It is also Ferragosto which is celebrated with picnics and BBQs. Beaches can become very busy in the weeks leading up to these holidays and after. Italian summer holidays are in full swing and traveling for two weeks is common so book early and restaurant reservations are encouraged. Dealing with the HEAT Temperatures in August in Umbria average around high of 30°C and lows of 16°C. Carrying around a water bottle is ideal and can easily be filled with potable water from fountains on the street. These are either free flowing or have a on/off valve. If you see "ACQUA NON POTABILE" do not drink this water. Sun protection is also recommended and don't be afraid to even use an umbrella if out under the direct sun.

DRIVING IN ITALY&nbsp;Italian drivers Italian drivers are not great about turn signals.&nbsp;There are two kinds of drivers in Italy: drivers that don’t use their turn signal ever, and drivers that keep the turn signal on the whole time. Italian drivers value being&nbsp;fluido.&nbsp;If there’s an empty space, clearly this is meant to be filled by the driver. For this reason, Italian drivers often get on your butt a little closer than you’d like. Italian drivers are impatient.&nbsp;If you don’t hit the gas the moment the light turns green, you will get honked at. If you wait too long to pull onto the highway, you’ll get a similar reaction. When driving on Friday and Sunday evenings on motorways around cities, just like at home, you’re bound to run into some traffic. Urbanites return from the beach or countryside, so best avoid driving between 5pm and 11pm if possible! Where are bad places to drive in Italy? We recommend avoiding driving in major cities in Italy,&nbsp;especially Naples, which is known to have some of the worst driving in the country. Yes we did it and survived! Rome can be a bit rough, too. But this is by no means representative of the whole country. Northern Italy — anything north of Rome — is quite civilized when it comes to driving. Some people say that the further south you go, the worse the driving gets. Driving in much of the rural south is more relaxed than in cities. (Pictured below is a street that we actually drove down while in Naples. The pedestrians do move but you can imagine it being a bit stressful!)

Italian Road Rules In Italy they drive on the right side of the road. On three-lane roads, the right lane is the slow lane and the left lane is the passing lane. At crossings, vehicles on the right have the right of way. In short, always yield to the right. Keep in mind that turning right on red is not permitted in Italy. One-way streets are optional in some cities and you just drive really slow. If another car comes on a one-way street that is single lane - the driver going the wrong direction on the street must reverse to allow the other oncoming car to pass. Seat belts are required in Italy and you can be fined if you don’t wear one. Stop signs are more like yield signs – especially in the country outside of cities. In historic city centers, cars without permits might not be permitted. Keep an eye out for the Zona Traffico Limitato (ZTL) signs. If you are staying at a hotel in that area it might require you to drive into the ZTL. Emailing hotels ahead of time to confirm directions from a main highway can be a great way to navigate these tricky areas. Italian car rentals should come with a safety vest and reflective triangles in the trunk, which you are required to use if you need to pull over due to car trouble.

How do you pay tolls in Italy? You get a ticket when you enter toll roads, and&nbsp;then insert the ticket in the machine on the way out. There are lanes for cash or credit cards. Some are just for cars or trucks with transponders – so avoid these! We kept some cash on hand in case the credit card machines did not work but was pleasantly surprise how many had touch pay and had no issues! Wondering how much the tolls might be from one city to another? Check out https://tollguru.com/italy-toll-calculator this site will give you the fastest route price and cheaper route price. Where to park? Check online for parcheggios which can either be free or paid lots. Often you can find these outside a city and then are connected by escalator, elevator, or are a short walk into the city center. Yellow&nbsp;lines are for&nbsp;disabled&nbsp;parking; once again you must display the appropriate pass.&nbsp; White lines&nbsp;mean the parking space is for&nbsp;residents. If your car is parked in a white parking space and you fail to show a resident pass, you will receive a fine.&nbsp;White line however are likely free – always check the posted signage.Blue&nbsp;is paid street parking. You are required to&nbsp;pay Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00.&nbsp;Prices vary. Once you have your ticket, leave it on the dashboard.&nbsp; If you intend to park your car overnight, we would not recommend parking on the street. Look for parking included with the hotel at a secure lot. Cars left in a street where cleaning is scheduled are towed away as well as risking being broken into. Driving Speed Limits in Italy More than 6,500 kms make up Italy’s national system of motorways. Each level has a different speed limit:Superstrade, also known as a&nbsp;Type B motorway, or&nbsp;strada extraurbana principale, are&nbsp;dual carriageways&nbsp;(divided expressways with at least two lanes in each direction), with a paved shoulder and no intersections. The speed limit is&nbsp;90 km/h&nbsp;(56 mph).&nbsp; Autostrade, are&nbsp;Type A motorways&nbsp;with a maximum speed limit of&nbsp;130km/h, and link major cities. The A1, for example, goes from Milan to Rome to Naples. Urban roads&nbsp;have a maximum speed limit of&nbsp;50 km/h. Strade Bianche, also known as the “white roads”, is the&nbsp;unpaved back roads&nbsp;that criss-cross the countryside through vineyards and olive groves. The name comes from the colour of the earth and small stones of these roads during the dry summer. These are&nbsp;ideal cycling and walking paths. Requirements for Driving in Italy Do you need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?If you do get pulled over by the police you will need to have an IDP. We have heard of rumours where the police pull you over and find out you don’t have one then continue to alert police further down the same highway. This could mean multiple fines and risking having your Canadian License taken - so it’s a good idea to have an IDP. What is an International Driving Permit?It is basically a translation of your license and includes a photo. When accompanied by a valid driver’s licence, enables a person to drive vehicles for leisure purposes in many foreign countries. The IDP is valid for 12-months.For Canadians, only <a href="https://www.caa.ca/services/travel/international-driving-permit/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CAA</a> is authorized to issue IDPs in Canada. We went in person and took less then an hour, cost is $35 for CAA members and we did not need to bring passport photos.For Australians, you can apply for an IDP online through <a href="https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-for-an-international-driving-permit-idp" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Service NSW</a>. Cost is $49 and you must have a passport sized photo taken within the past 6-months. TIPS FOR HIRING A RENTAL CAR IN ITALY 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Make&nbsp;sure&nbsp;insurance&nbsp;is included&nbsp;in your car rental.&nbsp;You will likely not cause damage but someone else will while you are parked. Most Italian cars are dented or scratched.2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The majority of cars available in Italy will be&nbsp;manual, not automatic.&nbsp;Remember to specify when you reserve a car that you would like automatic if that is what you prefer.3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Download maps to help with navigation or consider getting an eSim to have data available while traveling. GPS can be handy but are not always available to rent.4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Organise your&nbsp;car&nbsp;rental in advance as we will be travelling in high season.5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do not get a Fiat… just don’t. It’s cute in theory but we have heard horror stories from people not being able to navigate country roads.&nbsp;

Umbria, Italy 

UMBRIA, ITALY Where is Umbria?Umbria is located in central Italy and the regional capital is Perugia. This is the largest city in the region and just a short drive from the wedding venue. Umbria is known as the green heart of Italy. With a landscape strewn with mountains and valleys. Roman remains can still be found in cities around the region such as in Assisi there are the Roman city walls, the Piazza del Comune (forum), a theatre, an amphitheater, and the Temple of Minerva. The region is also filled with architecture and artistry from the medieval and renaissance periods.

PERUGIA Perugia is the capital of Umbria and sits high atop a mountain top with gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. It is the home of Baci chocolates with a shop on each corner in the main square Piazza IV Novembre. Home of the National Gallery of Umbria. There are a number of medieval churches and towers to see as well as you can wall along 4km of medieval aqueduct.

DERUTA This hilltop medieval town is just full of colour and ceramics. Deruta, is well known for their ceramic production. So much so that the Museo Regionale della Ceramica is here. Many of their ceramics are a Maiolica style with bright colours on a white background and can be found all around the city in shops and also on the streets. You can even see artisans practicing their craft in the their many shops.

ASSISI Assisi is the home to many basilicas and cathedrals with the most famous being the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi. It is the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan religious order. There are also two medieval castles - Rocca Maggiore, is the largest and open for visits. The Roman Temple of Minerva stands prominently in center of the city and houses a gothic church. You can even tour underground to see the roman ruins that the temple is built upon.

SPELLO This small medieval town is just a short drive from Assisi. It feels like you’ve been transported back in time, with two 12-sided towers flanking the Porta Venere Roman gate. Every alleyway and doorway is adorned with gardens and flowers as this city organizes annual competitions for best infiorata, which means decorated with flowers.

FOLIGNO Foligno is another ancient town in Umbria that controlled the main pass between the Umbrian plain (West) and the Adriatic coast (East). When visiting you will notice that it is much more modern than other towns in the area. This is due to Foligno being badly damaged during an earthquake in 1832 and it was largely rebuilt following heavy bombing in World War II. Due to its location it has become a commercial and industrial center but you can also find bustling piazzas and restored cathedrals. It is also well known for its happing night life.

BEVAGNA The quaint town is a short drive away from the wedding venue in the heart of the Umbrian wine region. Originally an Etrusco-Oscan settlement it later was under the Romans and was called Mevania. Around the main square, Piazza Silvestri, stands three Romanesque churches. This is a ZTL town where you park outside the town walls.

SPOLETO The town of Spoleto is brimming with art as it hosts the annual Festival dei due Mondi (Festival of two worlds) which is a major arts and culture festival. Its Renaissance history is evidenced through the town with the Rocca Albornoziana housing art and objects from the period. The entire city is connected by a series of underground moving sidewalks allowing escape from the heat and less climbing in this hilly city.

TERNI Terni, an industrial city that was founded more than 2,000 years ago. It is also known as the City of Lovers, because St. Valentine was born here and became the city’s bishop.Many parts of Terni city have been rebuilt following the destruction wrought by bombing raids during World War II. However, there are several ancient sites still standing. Visit the Basilica of St. Valentine, in which the saint’s relics are housed. Tour the 17th-century Terni Cathedral, also known as the Duomo of Santa Maria Assunta. Other historical sites include the Roman Amphitheater and the 16th-century Palazzo Spada.

CITIVTA DI BAGNOREGIO This village sits atop a hill made of volcanic tuff and is called the '"dying city" as the soil errods from the foundation beneath it. Here you will find medieval houses and LOTS of tourists. It is beautiful and impressive to see but a few things to note: the walk to the city is 2 km and uphill both ways, you pay a toll then to walk across the bridge into the city, there is a ZTL area that can be easily accidentally driven into when following google maps driving directions.. It is listed by Borghi più belli d'Italia, which is a private association of small italian towns of strong historical and artistic interest. <a href="http://www.borghitalia.it/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">http://www.borghitalia.it/</a>

ORVIETO The ancient town of Orvieto sits hilltop and is built over a network of Etruscan caves. It is easy to get lost in the winding streets as you feel transported back in time walking under medieval arches along stone lined streets. Duomo Orvieto sits in the old city and this cathedral is well known for its black and white striped facade. There are tours below the city where you can walk through the cave network. You can also walk down a 50 meter alongside an Etruscan well on two spiral staircases that never meet. MONTEFALCO Situated in the central west of Umbria,&nbsp;Montefalco&nbsp;stands on a hill carpeted with olive trees and grape vines, in the middle of the valley of the Clitunno, Topino and Tiber rivers. This breath-taking position has led to Montefalco being known as&nbsp;The Balcony-rail of Umbria. Similar to other umbrian cities it is surrounded by a medieval walls. From here, on clear days, it is possible to admire a 360 ° panorama that stretches from Perugia to Spoleto, from the Subappennino to the Martani Mountains.In August Montefalco hosts Montefalchese which has music, dance, entertainment, and historical reenactments. 2024 Dates TBD

AMALFI COAST, ITALY

NAPLES Napoli is known for its grand castles, palaces, and churches. It is also known for some of the most chaotic driving conditions and like any big tourist area you may hear "Attenzione pickpocket!" being called out (or worse being pickpocketed). There are lots of local food options so don't be afraid to try a food walking tour as they are known for inventing pizza. Many stop in Naples as they head down to the Amalfi Coast or to Pompeii archeological park.

POMPEII The ghostly ruins of ancient Pompeii make for one of the world's most engrossing archaeological experiences. Much of the site's value lies in the fact that the town wasn't simply blown away by Vesuvius in AD 79 but buried under a layer of&nbsp;lapilli&nbsp;(burning fragments of pumice stone). Here visitors can walk down Roman streets and snoop around millennia-old houses, temples, shops, cafes, amphitheatres and even a brothel. For parking check out Parking Zeus - Area 2 (Bus &amp; Camper). This lesser known area is just a short walk via paths. Make sure when driving to keep your eye out for the brown Archeo Natura Pompeii sign with the blue Parking sign.

ISCHIA The volcanic outcrop of Ischia is the most developed and largest of the islands in the Bay of Naples. An early colony of Magna Graecia, first settled in the 8th century BC, Ischia today is famed for its thermal spas, manicured gardens, striking Aragonese castle and unshowy, straightforward Italian airs – a feature also reflected in its food. Ischia is a refreshing antidote to glitzy Capri. Ferry service runs from Naples or from Sorrento daily. Castello Aragonese is worth the visit but be sure to take the elevator up. It is NOT worth the hike up and you will do this same walk on the way down.

SORRENTO A small resort town with a big reputation, Sorrento is a town of lemons, high-pedigree hotels and plunging cliffs that cut through the heart of the historical core. Be sure to try the lemoncello here.

CAPRI Capri is beautiful and very picturesque. There’s barely a grubby building or untended garden to blemish the splendour. Steep cliffs rise majestically from an impossibly blue sea; elegant villas drip with wisteria and bougainvillea; even the trees seem to be carefully manicured. Walk around the island or hop on a tour of one of the many blue grottos. It is however PACKED with tourists regardless of the time of year.

POSITANO Dramatic, deluxe and more than a little dashing, Positano is the Amalfi Coast's front-cover splash, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. No less photo-worthy are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable retailers.

TUSCANY, ITALY

PISA Once a maritime power to rival Genoa and Venice, modern Pisa is best known for an architectural project gone terribly wrong. But the world-famous Leaning Tower is just one of many noteworthy sights in this compelling city. Education has fuelled the local economy since the 1400s, and students from across Italy compete for places in its elite university. The centre of town has a vibrant cafe and bar scene, balancing an enviable portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists – a charm you will definitely not discover if you restrict your visit to Piazza dei Miracoli. FLORENCE Cradle of the Renaissance, romantic, enchanting and utterly irresistible, Florence (Firenze) is a place to feast on world-class art and gourmet Tuscan cuisine. Capital city of Tuscany, it is a city that bustles with&nbsp;industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science. (📷: Tanya Laughlin)

SIENA Siena is a city where the architecture soars, as do the souls of many of its visitors. Effectively a giant, open-air museum celebrating the Gothic, Siena has spiritual and secular monuments that have retained both their medieval forms and their extraordinary art collections, providing the visitor with plenty to marvel at. The city's historic contrade (districts) are marvellous too, being as close-knit and colourful today as they were in the 17th century, when their world-famous horse race, the Palio, was inaugurated. And within each contrada lies vibrant streets populated with artisanal boutiques, sweet-smelling pasticcerie (pastry shops) and tempting restaurants. It's a feast for the senses and an essential stop on every Tuscan itinerary.
