Ica & Paracas
(recommended day trip or 2 days)
Paracas is a coastal town in western Peru and is the starting point for trips to the Islas Ballestas where you can spot sea lions, penguins, dolphins and lots of birds from a tour boat.
(3.5 hours south of Lima)
Ica is mostly known for being the place that produces pisco, the national drink of Peru. It also is a wine producing area and you can do tours to learn about and sample the pisco and wine.
(4 hours south of Lima)
Huacachina (shown above) is a tranquil desert oasis. The dunes surrounding the lake on all sides are the perfect playground to embark on dune buggy rides and try your hand at sand boarding.
(4 hours south of Lima)
You can reach these destinations by bus (Ormeño) or private transfer from Lima.
Cusco & The Sacred Valley
(recommended 2-3 days)
Cusco's history includes the rise and fall of the Inca Empire followed by the invasion of Spanish conquistadors in the early 1500s. Today, remnants of both eras share the narrow city streets – from centuries-old baroque cathedrals to exquisite stone masonry – creating a rare collision of Andean and Spanish styles. We recommend at least 2 days of acclimating yourself to the 11,000 foot altitude in Cusco before proceeding to Machu Picchu.
(1.5 hour flight from Lima)
The beautiful Río Urubamba Valley, known as El Valle Sagrado (the Sacred Valley) is a peaceful corner of the Andes with colonial towns, isolated weaving villages, and lofty Inca citadels (Pisac and Ollantaytambo) that are worth exploring. It is also known for its myriad trekking routes, salt mines, and rafting to rock climbing activities. We recommend hiring a private driver for the day.
(18 miles from Cusco)
Machu Picchu
(recommended less than a day)
More than 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu is the most visited tourist destination in Peru. The Incan built structure has been deemed the “Lost Cities”, unknown until its relatively recent discovery in 1911. It is one of the Seven World Wonders.
(To reach Machu Picchu from Cusco: 1) take the 3-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes then the 20-minute bus that takes you to Machu Picchu, or 2) for the adventurers, you can walk the 4-day Inca Trail Trek.)
