Maddie and Tyler first met each other at the Grassfield High School football stadium in 2015. Tyler was a senior on the AFJROTC color guard and Maddie was a junior on the sidelines photographing the game for the yearbook staff. They were introduced through a mutual friend. From there they were in the same friend group throughout 2015-2016 and saw each other constantly. After football games, the friend group would often tailgate in Tyler's truck in the Walmart parking lot. As they spent more time together in their friend group, the two became inseparable.
Tyler was the guy who asked Maddie to three formal dances and got her to wear a dress (big shocker for those who knew Maddie growing up)!! For a while, the two didn't show up anywhere without each other. In the meantime, it seemed the whole friend group knew about their feelings for each other except for Maddie and Tyler. They both refused to admit their feelings to the other as they didn't want to ruin their friendship.
This continued even after the seniors in the friend group graduated. Maddie and Tyler continued to hang out together the summer after Tyler graduated. When the rest of the friend group moved away, Maddie and Tyler continued to have their own adventures. Finally after growing closer throughout the whole summer, the two finally discussed their feelings for each other. After staying up until 3am to finish the first season of Stranger Things together, Tyler and Maddie became official on September 9, 2016.
Their relationship continued throughout Maddie's senior year. Tyler helped Maddie through many stressful events, surgeries, and doctors appointments during her senior year. After Maddie graduated from high school in 2017, the two started taking classes at Tidewater Community College. They attended separate campuses as Tyler was pursuing welding/diesel mechanics and Maddie was pursuing an Associates of Science. The couple learned about a grand tour of Italy that was being hosted by some of their old high school teachers. The two worked while taking classes so that they could pay for their own trips to Italy. In June 2018, the couple was dropped off at the Norfolk, VA airport and embarked on a 10hr flight to Milan, Italy.
From Milan, the group the couple travelled with headed to a town just outside of Venice. After a well deserved night of sleep at their first hotel in Italy, the couple woke up and started getting ready for their day abroad in Venice! Travelers were advised to bring small drawstring bags as they explored Venice as many churches and historical establishments did not allow backpacks. Maddie was peeved Tyler was trying to include a bulky box in the backpack that he would not let her open or remove. Maddie just adjusted the bag so that her camera lens would fit and told Tyler he could carry the bag then.
The couple continued on to have a wonderful adventure in Venice. They walked thorough historic churches and museums. They had their first taste of local Italian food and watched a venetian glassblowing demonstration. From there, the group went to go explore the canals on a gondola ride!
Gondolas are very interesting boats if you have never been on one! The seats are located in only certain parts of the boat so that it can transport people and remain balanced. They require people to enter the gondola in a certain order. It was very nerve wracking for the couple as each person entering the gondola would cause it to shake side to side almost tipping over. Even as the gondola cruised through the canals, one person leaning one way would move the entire boat.
The gondoliers who maneuver these gondolas through the canals are so extremely talented. While Maddie was taking a break from taking photos, her yearbook teacher asked to take a turn taking photos. During this time, while Maddie was engrossed in the scenery from the canals in Venice, Tyler pulled the box out of their bag. THEN HE POPPED THE QUESTION!!
From there, the newly engaged couple enjoyed 9 more days exploring the different regions of Italy. They had plenty of fantastic food, wine, and lemoncello.
