You can visit significant monasteries dating from Byzantine period to the last years of the Ottoman Empire. The island is rich in religious history, featuring some excellent hagiographers, whose works have been preserved and now decorate various churches on the island. Besides the monasteries, one can also visit old Byzantine churches, such as Taxiarches in Messaria, Melida, Ypsilou, Kimisis Theotokou in Mesathouri, and Agios Nikolaos in Korthi. Patron saint of the island is Panagia Theoskepasti in Chora.
