When should I get my passport?

Since you are traveling to Europe you need a passport if you do not have one! If you do have a current passport you need to check when it expires! If it is going to expire close to the date you will be traveling, you should apply for a passport renewal! The best thing to do is... as soon as you know you will be attending and you RSVP, the next step should be obtaining a new passport or renewing your current one if it will be expiring within 6 months of September 2025!

When should I arrive?

We recommend arriving to Ireland early and not the day of the wedding! If you can, we would recommend arriving early on 9/22. It is about a 2.5 hour drive from Dublin to the venue/accommodations in Ballycastle, NI so keep that in mind. Our planner has ensured us that this drive is pretty stress free. If you plan on making a little vacation out of this trip, the best situation would be to arrive on 9/21 so you can take your time and enjoy some sights along the way up north. If this doesn't fit your plan that is totally fine and up to you! Again, we would at the least recommend arriving early the day before the wedding to accommodate the drive.

Where should I stay?

Our planner advised it would be best for guests to stay at the Marine Hotel Ballycastle for ease of transport. It will ultimately be up to guests to contact the hotel and book their own accommodation. You can find more info on this under the Travel & Accommodations tab.

What airport should I fly into?

Although Belfast International is closest to our accommodations, you want to fly into Dublin Airport! Dublin is the only airport with DIRECT FLIGHTS from JFK! Do not make the mistake of booking a flight into Belfast. You will have to transfer at Heathrow International in London and that is a headache! Make it easy on yourself and fly into Dublin, rent a car, and drive up north. Make sure to give yourself ample time for flight delays and checkpoints. We wouldn’t want you to miss the wedding!

What currency should I bring?

The Island of Ireland is split between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The capital of Ireland is Dublin, while the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast. If you plan on visiting the Republic, bring Euros €! For activities near our wedding venue and accomodations, plan to bring British Pounds £! Of course places accept credit card near cities, but it’s always nice to have physical cash on hand for small rural towns like the one we will be staying in.

How big is Ireland?

The whole country is about the size of Indiana. A lot of key places to see are not far away from each other if you look on Google Maps. Just keep in mind, a 2 hour drive will probably feel a little longer there than at home because of the narrow and winding roads. It will also feel longer because you may feel obligated to pull over on the side of the road to take pictures in front of a castle ruin or with some of the 6 million cows that live there!

Should I rent a car?

The answer is YES! And if you don’t feel comfortable driving a manual car, MAKE SURE YOU SPECIFY YOU WANT AN AUTOMATIC! This is the absolute best way to see Ireland. Yes they drive on the left side of the road and on the right side of the car, but it is by no means impossible. Take your time to get acclimated to the car and give yourself time on the road when first taking off. The people on the road are more than aware that they share the road with tourists. Your rental car even has a sticker on it that shows it’s a rental incase your driving doesn’t make it obvious. Street signs are in English.

Should I carpool?

Yes! This is probably the best way to save money. If you know you will be traveling with a group then we would recommend sharing a car. Just be mindful the cars run small because the roads are small! They don’t have big trucks or SUV’s, but some rental companies do offer sprinter vans as an option. Also, don’t forget that you have your luggage that takes up space in the car as well.

GPS in my rental car?

If the rental company offers GPS, take the option. The data on your phone may not last all day depending how much you use it, so the GPS that comes in the car is very handy. It may also act as a wifi hotspot (which was extremely helpful during our trip).

It’s Ireland, doesn’t it rain every day?

Yes it’s a rainy climate and that’s why it’s so green, but it does not rain every day! Some compare the rain to Florida rain. Wet one minute and clear the next. When we went in September of 2022, we wore jeans and a light long sleeve shirt. We brought a fleece zip up with rain jacket to layer over it incase it got really cold. The mornings were misty and chilly, but by mid day the sun was shining and it was 70 degrees at times. It was comfortable and that’s why we chose this time of year to visit again. Regardless, weather is weather and it is unpredictable and out of our control but it won’t stop us from having the best time together.

What’s the difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland? Aren’t they the same thing?

No! Ireland has a pretty rich history regarding its fight for independence. Their revolutionary war began in 1919, and the Republic did gain it's independence from Great Britain in 1921. The Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union and uses EUROS as its currency. Northern Ireland (although part of the Island of Ireland) is actually part of the United Kingdom. Since our wedding will be in NI and is part of the UK, the currency they use is the BRITISH POUND! If you are doing any activity near the venue or in Northern Ireland you need to bring your pounds £.
