The San Diego Zoo, located in Balboa Park just minutes from downtown San Diego, is one of the most famous and innovative zoos in the world. Spanning over 100 acres, it is home to more than 12,000 animals representing over 680 species and subspecies. The zoo is also an accredited botanical garden, featuring a stunning collection of around 700,000 plants from over 3,100 species, making it as much a paradise for plant lovers as it is for wildlife enthusiasts.

What sets the San Diego Zoo apart is its open-air, naturalistic habitats that allow visitors to experience animals in environments that closely mimic their native homes. Popular exhibits include Africa Rocks, Elephant Odyssey, Polar Bear Plunge, and Gorilla Tropics. Guests can also enjoy panoramic views of the zoo via the Skyfari Aerial Tram or hop on a guided bus tour that covers a large portion of the park. For families with children, the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is a hands-on, immersive area designed for kids to engage with nature and animals from deserts, rainforests, and beyond.

Beyond its exhibits, the San Diego Zoo is a global leader in conservation. Through the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, it supports species recovery programs, runs a cutting-edge cryopreservation lab known as the “Frozen Zoo,” and actively works to reintroduce endangered species into the wild. Educational efforts like the Zoo Corps program help inspire the next generation of conservationists by engaging young volunteers to assist and educate guests.

With its world-class animal care, stunning landscapes, and mission-driven conservation work, the San Diego Zoo offers a memorable and meaningful experience for visitors of all ages. The USS Midway Museum, located on Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, is a retired U.S. Navy aircraft carrier turned immersive maritime museum. Commissioned in 1945 and decommissioned in 1992, the USS Midway served through pivotal moments in 20th-century military history—from post–World War II operations and the Vietnam War to Operation Desert Storm—before opening to the public in 2004.

Spanning nearly 10 acres, the museum features over 60 exhibits across three levels: the flight deck, hangar deck, and below deck. It showcases more than 30 restored aircraft and helicopters, tracing aviation history from WWII to modern naval operations. Visitors can explore real aircraft, climb into cockpits, and walk the expansive flight deck with breathtaking views of San Diego’s skyline.

Admission includes a self-guided audio tour narrated by former Midway sailors, leading guests through command centers, engine rooms, ready rooms, and crew living quarters. Interactive experiences such as flight simulators and virtual reality missions offer fun for both kids and adults. Knowledgeable volunteer docents—many of them Navy veterans—provide personal stories and insights that bring the ship’s history to life.

The USS Midway Museum offers a one-of-a-kind “floating city” experience that combines history, technology, and storytelling. It’s one of San Diego’s most popular attractions and a must-see for those interested in naval aviation, military heritage, or simply exploring an iconic piece of American history.

Lifeguard La Jolla Cove

(619) 221-8899

La Jolla Cove is a stunning, secluded coastal gem located just north of downtown San Diego in the upscale neighborhood of La Jolla. Nestled within sandstone cliffs and part of the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, the cove is known for its clear, calm waters, making it a favorite destination for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and wildlife watching. The protected marine environment is home to vibrant sea life, including Garibaldi fish, rays, and—seasonally—even leopard sharks.

One of the most charming aspects of La Jolla Cove is its resident population of sea lions and seals. These playful marine mammals are often seen sunbathing on the rocky shoreline or swimming along the coast, providing a unique and entertaining sight for visitors. The area is also a haven for photographers and nature lovers, offering panoramic ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and vibrant sunsets.

Guests can enjoy a range of activities, from snorkeling around sea caves to strolling along the scenic coastal paths. Underwater visibility can reach up to 30 feet, allowing for exceptional views of the marine ecosystem. While the cove itself is small, its natural beauty and biodiversity make it one of San Diego’s most iconic spots.

Parking in the area can be limited, so it’s best to arrive early. Water shoes are also recommended, as the rocky terrain can be slippery. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful seaside escape or a fun outdoor adventure, La Jolla Cove is a must-visit destination during your time in San Diego.

Cabrillo National Monument

1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr, San Diego, CA 92106, USA
(619) 523-4285

Cabrillo National Monument is our favorite San Diego highlight—perched at the southern tip of the Point Loma peninsula, this scenic landmark commemorates Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s historic landing in San Diego Bay in 1542. The park spans roughly 160 acres and sits more than 400 feet above sea level, offering sweeping panoramic views of San Diego’s harbor, downtown skyline, Coronado Island, and the vast Pacific Ocean.

One of the monument’s most charming features is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, originally built in 1855. It has been beautifully restored and now serves as a museum that gives visitors a glimpse into the life of 19th-century lighthouse keepers. The park also includes military bunkers and coastal artillery installations from World War I and II, which can be explored through self-guided trails and historical exhibits.

Nature lovers will especially enjoy the monument’s network of coastal trails. The Bayside Trail offers a scenic 2.5-mile loop with views of San Diego Bay, native plants, and interpretive signs, while the newer Oceanside Trail leads to stunning ocean vistas and access to tide pools. During the winter months, Cabrillo is one of the best places in Southern California to watch for migrating gray whales from the Whale Overlook.

The Visitor Center features educational exhibits, a small theater with historical films, and ranger-led programs that bring early exploration and local ecology to life. Down at the tide pools, guests can observe colorful marine creatures like sea stars, anemones, and urchins in their natural habitat.

With its blend of rich history, natural beauty, and incredible views, Cabrillo National Monument is a peaceful and inspiring destination that we love and highly recommend to anyone visiting San Diego.
