La Jolla Cove&nbsp;is a stunning, secluded coastal gem located just north of downtown San Diego in the upscale neighborhood of La Jolla. Nestled within sandstone cliffs and part of the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, the cove is known for its clear, calm waters, making it a favorite destination for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and wildlife watching. The protected marine environment is home to vibrant sea life, including Garibaldi fish, rays, and—seasonally—even leopard sharks.One of the most charming aspects of La Jolla Cove is its resident population of sea lions and seals. These playful marine mammals are often seen sunbathing on the rocky shoreline or swimming along the coast, providing a unique and entertaining sight for visitors. The area is also a haven for photographers and nature lovers, offering panoramic ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and vibrant sunsets.Guests can enjoy a range of activities, from snorkeling around sea caves to strolling along the scenic coastal paths. Cabrillo National Monument&nbsp;is our favorite San Diego highlight—perched at the southern tip of the Point Loma peninsula, this scenic landmark commemorates Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s historic landing in San Diego Bay in 1542. The park spans roughly 160 acres and sits more than 400 feet above sea level, offering sweeping panoramic views of San Diego’s harbor, downtown skyline, Coronado Island, and the vast Pacific Ocean.One of the monument’s most charming features is the&nbsp;Old Point Loma Lighthouse, originally built in 1855. It has been beautifully restored and now serves as a museum that gives visitors a glimpse into the life of 19th-century lighthouse keepers. The park also includes military bunkers and coastal artillery installations from World War I and II, which can be explored through self-guided trails and historical exhibits.Nature lovers will especially enjoy the monument’s network of coastal trails. The Bayside Trail offers a scenic 2.5-mile loop with views of San Diego Bay, native plants, and interpretive signs, while the newer Oceanside Trail leads to stunning ocean vistas and access to tide pools. During the winter months, Cabrillo is one of the best places in Southern California to watch for migrating gray whales from the Whale Overlook.The&nbsp;Visitor Center&nbsp;features educational exhibits, a small theater with historical films, and ranger-led programs that bring early exploration and local ecology to life.
