Bill "Bojangles" Robinson helped to break down barriers in Hollywood and the entertainment industry.

Born "Luther Robinson" in Richmond’s Jackson Ward on May 25, 1878, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson became the world's preeminent tap dancer of his day, best known for his Broadway performances and film roles.

He is not only remembered for his innovative tap dancing techniques, but for his philanthropy as well. As he traveled, during one of his visits back home through the intersection that now surrounds his statue, he observed a child narrowly escape being struck by a car. He spent his own money to erect a traffic light at the intersecction, and years later a statue was built in his honor.
