What is a marriage mass?

The Catholic Mass is the primary way in which Catholics worship God as a community. It is where we celebrate the sacrament of the Eucharist (Jesus' sacrifice of himself). Marriage is also a sacrament, the only one of the seven that is not conferred by a priest or bishop. On the day of the wedding, Tim and Steph will confer this sacrament on each other!

Here's what to expect:

First, there will be readings from the Bible, followed by the homily, which is where the priest, Fr. Mark, connects the readings to daily life and/or the wedding day.

Next, there will be the exchanging of rings and vows.

Then, Fr. Mark will prepare the sacrifice of the Eucharist, and the community of Catholic believers will come forward to receive the Body of Christ. At this time, anyone not receiving the Eucharist may either join the line and cross their arms over their chest to receive a blessing or simply remain seated in the pew.

Just before leaving, Steph and Tim have chosen to honor Mary by asking her to pray for them in their marriage. They will briefly move to a secluded area to request her guidance and intercession. All are welcome to silently enjoy the beautiful meditation music or even to join in prayer for the couple from their seats.

Finally, the mass will conclude with a blessing and we'll all head across the street to celebrate together!
