The standard sites in New York are well-known, so here are a handful of our slightly more off the beaten path recommendations:
- The Cloisters (a medieval museum in Fort Tryon Park)
- The Tenement Museum (see how immigrants lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries)
- The Museum of the Moving Image (great Muppet exhibit, enough said)
- Brooklyn Museum (art museum with some interesting exhibits, right next to Prospect Park).
- If you're here long enough to fit it in, catch a show, on or off Broadway! If they are still running, our current favorites are Hadestown, Titanique, Death Becomes Her, and Maybe Happy Ending.
- Definitely touristy, but the Circle Line cruise is a great way to get a view of the City. As is walking the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and Brooklyn Bridge.
New York City has more bars and restaurants than you could count, and we strongly encourage you to venture outside Times Square and check some of them out. A few of our favorites from our neighborhood in Hells Kitchen are below.
- Norma (fantastic Italian)
- Tulcingo Del Valle (great authentic Mexican, be careful of the spice!)
- Arriba Arriba (more Americanized Mexican, the margaritas are dangerous!)
- The Marshal (wood-fired American cuisine and pizza, all locally sourced)
- Kashkaval Garden (Mediterranean restaurant with great cocktails)
- Rice & Beans (good Brazilian cuisine)
- Mom's Kitchen & Bar -(Great brunch spot with fun cocktails)
- Beer Culture (one of our go-to spots with craft beer, whiskey, and smash burgers)
- Pocket Bar & Back Pocket Bar (tiny but super cute and friendly wine & beer bars, a block apart)
- Rudy's (dive bar with cheap drinks that come with a free hot dog. Best deal in NYC!)
- Amy's Bread (bakery with great pastries, cakes, bread, and some breakfast sandwiches)
- Flaming Saddles (cowboys dancing on the bar)
