We're so happy you could make the trip - we know it was a journey to get here - so we want you to be able to explore everything that Mackinac Island has to offer! Whether you are looking to learn about the island's rich history, hit the trails, or shop 'till you drop, there is something for everyone! Here are some of our favorites things to do!
Long before there was a Chris and Travis, there was Mackinac Island. By the 1700s the Straits of Mackinac was a primary mode of transportation and the island became a stop for fur traders. But it wasn't until after the War of 1812, and the famous Battle of Mackinac, that the United States took control of the island. Today, Mackinac is known as a vacation destination, but you can still find glimpses of its history throughout the island by checking out these recommended activities.

The Grand Stables is a working stable that is home to 12 horses. It is also known for its antique carriage museum that houses roughly 30 antique carriages and sleighs.

Have you ever wanted to be a blacksmith? If you book one of these experiences you get a hands-on opportunity to create a knife or arrowhead necklace! Pick up the hammer and pound steel - making your knife out of a horseshoe or railroad spike!
Break out your walking shoes, because there's plenty of island to explore! The Main Street is home to amazing fudge shops, restaurants, and shopping - but just outside of the hustle and bustle you'll find tranquil trails through the fall foliage. With over 70 miles of trails you can spend hours hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Along the way you'll encounter several landmarks, including the Skull Cave, Arch Rock and Sugar Loaf (a limestone tower). When visiting Mackinac Island we LOVE renting bikes and riding around. But beware, the island has several hills that will test your strength (just ask Travis)!
Whether you're on a bike, or take a hike, we highly recommend hitting the trails. One of our favorites is the M-185 Route! It's an 8.2 mile journey around the entire circumference of the island.
This is just one of several places to rent bikes on the island. They offer several different bike styles including tandem and tricycles, as well as mobility devices for those that need them. With rates by the hour or day, they accommodate it all. For other bike rental shops click here: Bike Rentals.
Reservations: First-come First-serve Basis
(However, same-day in-person reservations accepted)
Cost: $60/hour for saddle horse rental
If you want to give your legs a break, why not check out what Mackinac has to offer via horseback! Horses are a HUGE part of the island's culture, so it only makes sense to make a new four-legged friend and go for a ride through the forest. As Cindy says "The best view of Mackinac is through the ears of a horse!"
Wanna take the reins of a carriage yourself? Check out Jack's Livery Stable and rent your own horse and buggy. For rates and info click here: Jack's Livery Stable
There is no better place to relax and unwind than Mackinac Island. The moment you step foot on the ferry you'll leave the hustle and bustle of mainland behind. On a crisp fall day you can grab a coffee from a local cafe and stroll along Main Street, or pull up an Adirondack chair and listen to the waves crash upon shore on the lawn of Mission Point. We hope that while you're on the island you have the opportunity to experience its tranquility, and here are some of our favorite ways to do it!

You can't go to Mackinac Island without visiting The Grand Hotel. Built in 1887, this magnificent hotel has hosted celebrities, presidents, and even the first public demonstration of Thomas Edison's phonograph. But most of all, it is home to the longest porch IN THE WORLD! Over 660 feet long, the Grand Hotel Porch offers spectacular views from one of the many rocking chairs.
If you didn't get enough time on the water during our Welcome Party, you can always cruise the Straits of Mackinac with Sip N' Sail Cruises! They offer several cruise options - like the Michigan Craft Beer Bridge tour or the Easy Like Sunday Morning cruise.
If you like to unwind by hitting the links, Mackinac Island has the golf course for you! One of the most unique golf courses in the country, the Jewel has both lush landscaping and beautiful scenery. Start off on the "Grand Nine", which is played next to the Grand Hotel and has views of Lake Huron and Round Island. Then you will be transported on a 15 minute horse and carriage ride, through parts of the island unseen by many visitors, to the "Woods Nine" in the interior of the island. There you will find views of the Upper Peninsula and the Mackinac Bridge.
Mackinac Island is also home to one of Michigan's oldest active courses, the Wawashkamo Golf Club. This 9-hole course is within the Mackinac Island State Park, and was originally laid out in 1898 on the site of the 1814 Battle of Mackinac. However, if you are like us and miniature golf is more your speed, Mackinac has you covered too!
All that exploring can really work up an appetite! Despite being small, the cuisine on Mackinac Island is surprisingly diverse. The Main Street is lined with small quaint eateries offering any and everything you could imagine. Whether it be a slice from Island Slice Pizzeria, pulled pork from Ice House BBQ (a speakeasy-like restaurant hidden away behind the Island House Hotel), or a cinnamon roll the size of your head from Good Day Cafe - you will never go hungry! With so many options it can be hard to choose! So here are some of our "must stop" places for a good bite (or a good cocktail)!
As you may know, we have good beer to thank for keeping us together. So it only makes sense that one of our all-time favorite places on the island is Great Turtle Brewery; Mackinac's first and only craft brewery and distillery! You can't go wrong with ordering anything off the menu, but we highly recommend the smoked whitefish hushpuppies and any of their great burgers. But you'll be remiss if you don't try one of their expertly crafted beers, or even their Painted Turtle cocktail flight made with their own Great Turtle vodka, rum, whiskey and gin!
When you think of Mackinac, you think of the world-famous Mackinac Island fudge! We hope you have a sweet tooth, because on the island you'll find 13 fudge shops that are making FIVE TONS of fudge every day. However, our favorite is Murdick's. The Murdick family was the first to bring candy to Mackinac Island in the 1880s. But it was more than just a store; Murdick's provided visitors the opportunity to watch how the candy was made, and was the first on the island to make fudge using marble slabs giving the fudge its unique flavor. Today you can still catch a fudge making demonstration, and of course taste-test all the different flavors!
Tucked into the Chippewa Hotel is one of the most iconic eateries on the island - the Pink Pony. If you get the chance, you have to sit on the back patio that hangs out over the water with amazing views of the lake. You'll come for the food and the views, but you'll stay for the Famous Island Rum Runner - the Pink Pony's signature cocktail!
There are just so many things to do and so many different restaurants on the island, that it was hard for us to list them all! So below are some links to ALL of them! We hope you fall in love with Mackinac Island - just like we did!
Check out all of the activities that Mackinac has to offer, including the Island Bookstore, the Haunted Theatre, and the Butterfly House.
Looking for a bite? Look no further! Check out all of the cafes, bars, and restaurants that the island has to offer! For lunch with a view, we recommend the Fort Mackinac Tea Room; where you can dine overlooking the lake and Main Street. (Note: admission to the fort is required)
