Travel & Accommodations

Welcome to Mackinac Island, MI

Nestled between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan in Lake Huron lies the perfect fall paradise for us to say "I Do". Mackinac Island is approximately 4.35 square miles of car-free bliss, with more than 80% of the island being preserved as Mackinac Island State Park and the ENTIRE island is listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Once you step foot on the island from the ferry you will be transported to a timeless oasis. But first, you've got to get here! This page will (hopefully) provide you with all the information you will need for getting to, where to stay, and how to get around Mackinac Island!

Traveling to the Ferry Terminals

By Car:

While you won't find any cars on the island, guests can roadtrip to the ferry terminals in either Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, Michigan. Here are some estimated travel times from major cities near you:

Chicago, IL: 414 miles, 6 hours 15 minutes

Indianapolis, IN: 484 miles, 7 hours 15 minutes

Atlanta, GA: 983 miles, 14 hours 30 minutes

Myrtle Beach, SC: 1,053 miles, 16 hours 30 minutes

Dallas, TX: 1,345 miles, 19 hours 15 minutes

Note: Clicking on the city will take you to the suggested routes on Google Maps.

These estimates are based on traveling to the Mackinaw City, MI ferry terminal located south of the Mackinac Bridge. Guests can opt to cross the iconic bridge and depart from the St. Ignace, MI ferry terminal, which will add approximately 20 minutes to your travel time. The Mackinac Bridge has a $4.00/car toll to cross.

By Air:

If taking to the sky is more your style, there are a couple of nearby commercial airports.

Pellston Regional Airport (PLN) and Chippewa County International Airport (CIU) are the closest commercial airports to Mackinac Island, and are both approximately 35 minutes from the Mackinaw City, MI ferry terminal. These are much smaller airports, so flights may be limited and less frequent.

However, more flight options may be available through the Cherry Capital Airport (TVC) in Traverse City, MI, which is approximately 2.5 hours from the Mackinaw City, MI ferry terminal.

The island has several great places to stay. Whether you want to stay at the Grand Hotel, in a quaint cottage, or a peaceful bed and breakfast, there is a place for everyone!

Traveling Around the Island

Without any cars on the island there are limited options for getting around. One of our favorite ways to explore the island is by bike. See our Things To Do page for more information about bike rentals on the island, or feel free to bring your own! The island's small size also makes it convenient for getting around by foot.

However, if biking or walking isn't for you, you can hail a cab! No, not the bright yellow sedans, but instead one with four legs and a mane attached to a carriage. Below is the information you need for booking a "taxi" on the island. You can also visit our Things To Do page to get more information on renting your own horse and carriage or taking a carriage tour.

Mackinac Island Carriage Taxis

Transporting your luggage:

Once you get to the Shepler's ferry terminal, in either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City, a porter will tag your luggage for the Stonecliffe (or whatever hotel/inn you are staying at) and facilitate sending it over to the island on the ferry. After arriving at Mackinac Island, your luggage will be delivered to the Stonecliffe, or whichever hotel, and then brought to your room.

Even though we know you won't want to leave (and we don't blame you), your luggage will be tagged by the Stonecliffe/hotel, and you won't have to touch your bags again until you are back on on the mainland.

Hotel Shuttle Services:

The Inn at Stonecliffe offers a complimentary carriage shuttle from the downtown area near the ferry terminal to the resort. The shuttle leaves downtown every hour on the hour.

Other resorts, including the Grand Hotel and Mission Point, also have carriage shuttles to their properties from the downtown area. If you are staying at one of these properties or are just wanting to visit them, please check their websites for information on schedule and costs.
