Second Line Tradition

THE TRADITION OF THE SECOND LINE IN NEW ORLEANS

The Second Line is one of New Orleans' most vibrant and cherished traditions, deeply rooted in the city’s history. It originated from West African and Afro-Caribbean funeral customs, where music was used to honor both life and death. When enslaved Africans were brought to Louisiana, they carried these traditions with them. Over time, these customs evolved, blending with the influences of French and Spanish cultures, as well as the music of brass bands, to become what we now know as the Second Line.

WHAT IS A SECOND LINE?

A Second Line parade consists of two parts: the "First Line," made up of the band and the event's main participants, such as a couple at a wedding or mourners at a funeral. Following them is the “Second Line,” where friends, family, and onlookers join the procession, dancing, waving handkerchiefs, and twirling parasols to the upbeat rhythm of the brass band. The Second Line symbolizes celebration, community, and joy, with participants actively participating, dancing, and following along as a way to honor the event.

The Second Line at Our Wedding

To celebrate our union in true New Orleans fashion, Amanda and I invite you to join us in our 9-block Second Line parade through the most iconic streets of the French Quarter. As we walk together, you’ll follow us, twirling umbrellas and waving handkerchiefs, which we will provide for you as part of the celebration.

This tradition is not just about moving from one place to another—it’s a symbolic way of bringing our community together to celebrate life, love, and joy. So, make sure to bring your walking shoes, and get ready to dance, laugh, and celebrate with us as we create unforgettable memories in the heart of New Orleans!
