Q + A

Really? An island... It's going to be hard to get to isn't it?

Not at all! The beauty of the Puget Sound, and especially Whidbey Island, is that everything is pretty close together and there are drive-on ferries galore. Plus, there is also a bridge onto the island from the north end. The quickest way to our venue from Seattle is to drive to the Mukilteo ferry terminal, where ferries leave every 30 minutes. The crossing takes 20 minutes and then the drive from the ferry is another 40-45. No, it's not an Uber-able trip, but we love how accessible it feels, while still capturing the essence of a remote getaway.

Do I have to take the ferry?

Nope! There is also a bridge to the island, called Deception Pass. Deception Pass is a stunning state park on the north end of Whidbey Island. It's worth checking out if you are worried about ferry lines - it is virtually the same travel time.

Do I need to pre-reserve a spot on the ferry?

You do not need to pre-reserve the ferry. More specifically, you can't pre-reserve the ferry. This is both good and bad. The good is that you are not restricted to a specific sailing, and you don't need to worry about logging onto a reservation website at 5 am 14 days prior to your preferred departure to secure a reservation, like some other ferries. The bad is that sometimes there is a wait. The ferries sail every 30 minutes, and are first come, first served. The longest the lines get is during summer weekends, so we shouldn't have an issue with our date, but we'd recommend planning to get on a ferry at least one or two earlier than the one that would get you to the venue just in time.

Where should I stay?

Even though Captain Whidbey is an Inn, rooms are limited. While we wish every single guest could stay the night at this magical venue, we have to be selective. We'll communicate on Captain Whidbey rooms separately, but if you don't hear from us, feel free to look into the options listed on our travel page. There are lots of great inns and also tons of amazing Airbnb options on the island.

Will there be shuttles to and from the venue?

We will have a shuttle pickup at Salty Vons Waterfront Inn in Coupeville. The first pickup will be at 3 pm, and a second and final one will be at 3:30. If you are staying in an Airbnb on the southern end of the island, feel free to take advantage of this shuttle. The shuttle will make one drop off trip right after the reception, and a final drop off trip around 11:45 pm. For those booking a different hotel or Airbnb and opting to drive to the venue, there is plenty of parking at Captain Whidbey. Uber/Lyft is not a reliable mode of transport on the island.

What is the attire for the wedding?

You can check out the attire on the Home page of our website. For questions about the attire, please use this website as a resource: https://www.brides.com/story/wedding-dress-code-explained.

Can I spend time at Captain Whidbey outside of the specific events?

Of course! This more of a shameless plug. We chose this venue largely for the fun summer camp vibes. We'd be thrilled if our guests spent time at the lagoon or on the back deck of the historic cabin. There is a dock for swimming, whale watching, launching kayaks, or just sitting and reading. It's a serene place that we want everyone to enjoy!

I'm going to be on the island multiple days - what should I do?

We are big hikers, and our two favorite hikes on or just off the island are Ebey's Landing and Mt. Erie. There are also some incredible meandering trails in the Deception Pass State Park. If you like a good beach walk, take your pick, there are plenty! Coupeville and Langley are sweet quintessential PNW beach towns with shops, restaurants and chances at whale watching. Be sure to walk the pier in Coupeville and visit the coffee shop on the end. There are a handful of great wineries and breweries on the island. Our favorite is Penn Cove Brewing. The Braeburn in Langley has some of the best fried chicken sandwiches this side of the Cascades, and Rocket Taco in Freeland is worth trying as well. Our favorite breakfast spot is Flower House Cafe, but if you're in the mood for sweets, Whidbey Donuts just behind Flower House is also amazing. Fort Casey and Fort Ebey are old military forts with lots of interesting sights and history to explore.

When should I arrive to the ceremony?

Please be at Captain Whidbey at least 15 minutes before we get started. Reminder if you are driving onto the island on wedding day - the ferries sail every 30 minutes. We recommend being on the 1:30 or 2 pm ferry. There is tons to see on the island and at Captain Whidbey if you arrive a little early!

Is there parking at the venue?

Yes, there is plenty of parking if you are planning to drive.

Will the wedding be indoors or outdoors?

We'll be outside for everything except the after party. We hope for beautiful, warm weather, but just in case, bring something to wrap up in. We will have heat lamps in the reception tent.

Are kids allowed?

With the exception of infants, we'd appreciate it if your kids stayed behind for the wedding. They are welcome to run around the property during Sunday brunch or during the day before the wedding begins.

When should I plan to leave on Sunday?

Everyone is welcome to swing by our farewell brunch for some fuel for the road, but we understand if you need to get an early start. If you are staying for brunch, we would recommend not booking flights any earlier than mid afternoon. The ferry line can sometimes get busy on Sundays, but driving north through Deception Pass is a great backup plan to avoid the ferry.
