Things to Do

First-Time Visitors

Must See the Museums

No D.C. trip is worthwhile without a visit to the best museum family: the Smithsonians! Start your day at the Air and Space Museum - more than just a series of empty rooms! Next, take a step back in time at the American History museum, where you'll discover that floppy disks and CD-ROMs count as American history. Go even further back next at the Natural History Museum, where you'll realize our million-year-old ancestors exercised way better dental hygiene than us today. Conclude your day at our personal favorite: The National Portrait Gallery, which will satisfy your desire to see portraits of Calvin Coolidge, Katy Perry, Pocahontas, and LL Cool J all in a single day!

Get To Know Your Government

Love it or really love it, our city is home to the country's best government buildings! Start off with a tour of the unrivaled Capitol building and rotunda. Next, look at other people reading books in the Library of Congress reading room. Make your way up Pennsylvania Ave for lunch at the Reagan International Trade Center food court before snapping some photos at the White House and, if you're extra cool and hip, the U.S. Department of Treasury. Spend your afternoon resting your eyes on our nation's founding documents at the National Archives; advance viewing of the excellent documentary, "National Treasure," is highly recommended.

March The Monuments

A sunny May day yearns for a stretch around the iconic D.C. monuments. Make your way up the Washington monument for the best views this side of the Potomac (get your tickets early!), before circling the beautiful Tidal Basin to take in the Jefferson, FDR, and MLK memorials. Grab your flashlights and head back to the National Mall after sunset: taking the nighttime stroll from the WWII Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial, you'll recreate one of our favorite D.C. activities.

Returning to D.C.?

A Jaunt Through Georgetown

Start your day with a Baked & Wired muffin at hand while strolling (or kayaking!) along the beautiful* Potomac River, climb the demonic 'Exorcist' steps, grab some underpriced falafels at Falafel Inc., explore the quirky shops along Wisconsin Avenue, break nothing at the L'Enfant Gallery, scoop up some overstuffed ice cream at Thomas Sweet's, and finish at D.C.'s best kept secret: the stunning landscapes of the Dumbarton Oaks. (*Don't look too hard).

A Loop Around Dupont

Begin a classic D.C. Saturday morning with a stroll through the Dupont Farmers Market and grab yourself a 'Call Your Mother' bagel and an 'Emissary' coffee. After walking the circumference of D.C.'s most famous geometrical destination - the Dupont Circle! - visit Kramer Books and walk the classic Embassy Row, featuring the embassies of all your favorite countries that are not America. Before visiting the one-and-only Dupont Underground for some artistic inspiration, grab a taste of Greece at Zorba's Cafe if you are not Doug Clauson, and a yogurt parfait at Le Diplomate if you are.

A Saunter in Southeast

Commence your morning with a pass through Eastern Market and grab some fresh fruit, a Bullfrog bagel, and some whimsical artwork of your favorite D.C. landscapes! Continue south past the historic Marine Barracks to Navy Yard, where you can grab some sushi from Kruba and Jeni's ice cream while watching turtles crawl into the Anacostia River. Cross the Yards Park Bridge, walk the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, circle the stadium of America's best baseball team (Go Nats!), and consider how you'll break it to your friends back home how you're now a true Washingtonian.
