You always hear people talking about sometimes just “being in the right place at the right time” for something extraordinary to happen. Well, as it so happened, Eric and Armando both found themselves living in Baltimore, Maryland, when they met for their very first date on November 7, 2019. Armando had traveled all the way from Texas for a teaching opportunity, and Eric had reluctantly left Philly after being there for nearly ten years to launch his healthcare management career at Johns Hopkins. Despite the greater serendipity of somehow being in the same place at the same time, Eric and Armando’s first date almost got lost in translation. Armando nearly left the restaurant after Eric was running two minutes late (it was raining, and Eric is NEVER normally late for anything), but luckily he stayed just long enough for Eric to arrive and order a round of drinks. Now, on the flip side, Eric had read Armando’s dating profile – emphasizing his early-to-rise-early-to-bed lifestyle with very little drinking and his search for a serious relationship with long-term potential – but then things took an unexpected turn. Armando thought he had ordered the Thursday night margarita special until the server brought out a tray filled with a flight of tequila shots. Eric wasn’t so upset about the tequila shots, but he was definitely trying to parse out whether Armando’s profile had been a total lie or if something else was amiss with this guy in person. It ended up just being a language blip with a confusing menu. So, Eric and Armando’s first date started off with tequila shots and ended with a shared sense of chemistry and deep conversation about life. Eric would go on to tell his parents two weeks later at Thanksgiving that he had met “the one” and that their annoying advice about “when you know, you’ll know” had actually been right all along for finding the right person (they were too in shock to even say “told you so”).

Eric and Armando quickly bonded over their shared love of travel and an openness to new experiences. In fact, Armando booked a surprise trip for them to go to Cuba together before they were even officially dating. But it didn’t take long for Eric to make things official with Armando, writing him a bilingual poem and asking him to be exclusive on New Year’s Eve of 2020. They made it to Cuba just in time for a magical adventure in February 2020 before the world shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic the next month. Everything changed during those COVID-19 years as everyone’s day-to-day lives unexpectedly shifted, but during this period of quarantine and uncertainty – Eric and Armando’s relationship and love for one another only grew stronger. They realized that they both harbored some extreme lifestyle choices – Armando with waking up at the crack of dawn, working out for hours every day, going above and beyond as a teacher (you should see the rapid-fire turnover of his bulletin board content and all the “extra” stuff he volunteers to do beyond the classroom), and preferring a practical but minimalist style at home versus Eric with working all hours to make an impact in healthcare/establish his career, constantly being in school for another degree (he swears the doctorate is the last one!), possibly having a shopping/antiquing addiction, and fighting to combat Armando’s minimalism at every turn with an eclectic blend of art and maximalist-style home décor (the treasures find him). Despite these differences, Eric and Armando are aligned around what’s most important as the foundation for their relationship – the importance of faith, a deep love for family and the friends who are like our chosen family, and a mutual respect and steadfast support for one another’s deepest hopes and dreams.

A whirlwind of travel, adventures, and experiences post-COVID-19 led Eric and Armando on a shared journey all over the world together – Mexico, Costa Rica, Columbia, Iceland, England, Greece, Italy, and Guatemala just to name a few – so it was only fitting that Eric’s proposal to Armando would happen abroad while they were in the Algarve region along the southern coast of Portugal. And on the beautiful sunny day of April 10, 2022, Armando said “yes” as they overlooked the ocean, limitless in its horizon just like the endless newfound possibilities of their engagement. Armando’s only condition was that he did not want an engagement longer than one year, but he selflessly compromised to support Eric’s ongoing academic journey at Johns Hopkins for a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degree. The extra time has also been helpful in getting to spend more quality time together with one another’s families and friends.

Now, as we prepare to be married next summer on August 9, 2025, we are so excited to have our favorite people all together in one of our favorite places to witness our lifelong commitment to one another and to support us on our journey into the future. We are so grateful for the extraordinary people and opportunities in our life so far, and we know that the best adventure is yet to come as we begin our life as a married couple.

Uno siempre escucha decir a la gente: “estaba en el lugar perfecto a la hora perfecta”. Bueno, ese fue el caso de Eric y Armando: Ambos se encontraron de forma precisa y perfecta en Baltimore, Maryland, el 7 de noviembre del 2019. Armando llegó desde Tejas para trabajar en una escuela; Eric, por su parte, llegó a la misma ciudad para empezar su carrera en Johns Hopkins. Sin embargo, aunque ambos estaban “en el mismo lugar y a la hora perfecta,” la realidad es esta: “Le doy dos minutos más. Si no llega, me voy,” dijo Armando. Eric llegó dos minutos después. “¡Perdón por llegar tarde! Estaba muy fuerte la lluvia,” dijo Eric. Pidieron unas bebidas: no sé qué pidió Eric, pero Armando pidió unos tequilas. Esto le extrañó a Eric, pues en perfil de Armando estaba muy claro de que el “no toma, se levanta/acuesta temprano, hace ejercicio, etc.” Llegaron las bebidas y Armando se sorprendió al verlas. “Yo no pedí estos tequilas, pensé había pedido esto otro”, dijo algo así. Para no hacerles largo el cuento, resulta que hubo una confusión en la redacción del menú y en lo que dijo Armando. Entonces, así comenzó esa noche: con tequilas. Pasaron algunas horas, y pronto se dieron cuenta ambos tenían varias cosas en común. Dos semanas después, en la Cena de Acción de Gracias, Eric le dijo a sus padres: conocí a un muchacho.

Una de las cosas que Eric y Armando tienen en común es el gran amor que tienen hacia los viajes y conocer lugares nuevos. De hecho, Armando sorprendió a Eric con un viaje a Cuba días después de conocerse. Al regresar del viaje, Eric le pidió a Armando ser su novio. “Tres, dos, uno,” contaron, y recibieron el 2020 juntos y formalmente en plan novios. Pasó la pandemia y todo cambió completamente, pero el amor de Eric y Armando creció. Pronto se dieron cuenta que no todo es cuento de hadas: Armando se levanta a las horas de la madrugada, está muy ocupado en la escuela y hace muchísimas cosas extras en ella; Eric, por su parte, ocupa un sin fin de horas en su trabajo y empieza un título sin antes terminar otro. Además, hay desafíos entre ambos en cuanto el exceso de compras y la sobre-decoración de Eric y el minimalismo y practicidad de Armando. Pero en las cosas que verdaderamente valen la pena están perfectamente alineados: el valor que le tienen a la fe, el amor y la importancia que le tienen a la familia y a sus amistades, y el respeto y apoyo mutuo que se tienen entre sí para lograr cada anhelo y sueño.

Eric y Armando han tenido la dicha de viajar a varios países juntos, y era de esperarse que uno lo propusiera matrimonio al otro estando en viaje. Fue Eric el que lo hizo. Eric le pidió matrimonio a Armando en la región de Algarve de Portugal el 10 de abril del 2022. Armando dijo que sí, pero que debían casarse en menos de un año. Con las ocupaciones de Eric, Armando ha apoyado Eric y concesionado la fecha. El tiempo extra les ha dado la oportunidad de pasar momentos significativos con familia y amigos, pero el momento ha llegado: se casan el 9 de agosto del 2025 en uno de sus lugares favoritos: Puerto Vallarta, Jaslisco, México.

Mientras nos preparamos para casarnos este 9 de agosto, nos llena el corazón de alegría juntarnos todos para que sean testigos de “nuestra historia”. Además, de que sean formalmente un equipo de apoyo para nosotros en es este día– y en todos los demás días. Somos muy afortunados de tener ocupaciones que nos llena el corazón de dicha y satisfacción, pero también a ustedes – sin embargo, tenemos presente que lo mejor aún viene en camino al empezar una vida juntos.
