Why Galveston?

We decided to have our wedding in Galveston because it holds a very special place in our hearts. Josh’s grandmother was born on the island and his family vacationed in Galveston when Josh was a child. Rebecca’s family also drove from Houston to spend the day at the beach on many occasions. We've got the baby photos to prove it! We have come to Galveston many times over the course of our relationship to enjoy the museums, architecture, and seafood. We also love swimming in the Gulf. Yes, the water is brownish but it isn’t dirty! Sediment from the Mississippi River &amp; Red River empty into the Gulf of Mexico. Galveston water is mostly shallow causing the sand and sediment turnover to be relatively high (unlike places like Florida where the water is deeper and there is more flora to catch the sediment.) We have made many special memories in Galveston over the years and we’re so glad to share this beach town with you. We hope you take some time to walk around the Strand, Post Office Street, and the Seawall.

Rides, carnival games, snacks and drinks all on the water! Live music and bar at one end and Bubba Gump Shrimp at the other!

Historic Pleasure Pier

Live music, sweets (including saltwater taffy made in front of you), bars, shops and restaurants. Also buy a drink and then walk around! You can have an open container on the Strand.

Find shops, art galleries, ice cream and coffee on Post Office Street!

Historic Post Office District 

Enjoy the Rainforest and Aquarium Pyramids, MG3D Theater and 4D Theaters, Discovery Museum, 20,000 Leagues Interactive Adventure and the Colonel Paddlewheel Boat.

The Bryan's beautiful collection features original art, artifacts, and touch screen displays for interactive experiences. 

The Bryan Museum

The 1892 Bishop’s Palace (a.k.a. Gresham House) is a contributing building in the East End Historic District, a National Historic Landmark. The house is listed in the National Register of Historic Places at the national level of significance in the area of architecture. Architectural historians list the Bishop’s Palace as one of the most significant of Victorian residences in the country.

The Railroad Museum boasts one of the largest restored railroad collections in the southwest, and one of the five largest in the country, with numerous railroad memorabilia and exhibits, including more than 40 pieces of locomotives and rolling stock. The museum also owns a mile of track, allowing caboose rides on Saturdays between 11:00am and 2:00pm, weather permitting.&nbsp;A number of indoor and outdoor venues are available for private events.

Enjoy a free ferry ride! The Galveston-Port Bolivar ferry takes travelers on SH 87 between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

Quintessential GI souvenir shop on the water. The breeze way loaded with rocking chairs is perfect for lounging while watching the waves after grabbing a drink from the bar or coolers inside.

The&nbsp;Kitchen Chick&nbsp;is a boutique&nbsp;kitchen&nbsp;store offering cooking classes,&nbsp;kitchenware &amp; and all sorts of cookin goodies!

The old seafood stand by on GI. That crab dip is legit, friends. The lobster bisque is always a favorite as well!

Gaidos Seafood Restaurant

Smash fresh caught crab alongside your Jambalaya and Étouffée. A local favorite for cajun style seafood.

Benno's On the Beach

Excellent brunch spot along with killer baked goods you can take with ya! Satisfy that sweet tooth and snag some pie. The restaurant shares space with an antique store that serves up mimosas while you wait for a table.

The Sunflower Bakery & Cafe

VEGAN FRIENDLY! A new fish taco spot that's walkable from Murdochs. Make a day of it and get some slamming tacos, elote or even fresh made bagels or waffles in the morning before you hit Seawall for stroll.

Getting to Galveston

Amtrak

Amtrak stops on Galveston Island. Map routes on www.amtrak.com.

Fly & then Drive

Fly into either Bush Intercontinental or Hobby Airport in Houston. Then rent a car at the airport. Hobby to Galveston is approximately 40 miles. Bush to Galveston is approximately 70 miles.

Driving from Houston

Take 45 South (the Gulf Freeway) straight to Galveston. We recommend mapping directions from your starting location and avoiding tolls!   (Tolls can be tricky in Houston and some require a special toll tag.)

Fly and then take a Shuttle

Shuttle services from Houston airports to Galveston are about $65-$75 round trip.

Galveston Island Trolley

The historic trolley is $1 for adults and minors ride free (exact change needed). The trolley has a downtown route and a seawall route. The trolleys pass each stop on the trolley route approximately every 30 minutes. A transfer between the Downtown and the Seawall Loop is included in the price.

Travel

Air B&B

We love staying at Air B&amp;Bs when we travel to Galveston. If you choose to do the same, we recommend staying in the East End Historic District. The district can be found easily on a map and you can limit your search to spots in this area when using the Air B&amp;B app.

Thank you so much for RSVP-ing to our wedding to be held on November 21, 2021. We thank you for your generosity and kindness as we do our best to start our marriage while also prioritizing health, safety, and joy. The goal of this message is to tell you what to expect when you attend our wedding. Covid precautions may change as we track the state of the pandemic. This is the COVID safety policy for Josh King and Rebecca Mauldin’s wedding on 11/21/2021.Last updated Sunday, October 3, 2021. Location: Galveston, TX.&nbsp; Headcount: We expect we will have about 90 people in attendance (including vendors). It is our understanding that the indoor reception space can hold 250 people seated with a dance floor, so there will be room to spare. Vaccines: Guests (aside from children too young to get vaxxed - we anticipate about 7) are confirmed as vaccinated.&nbsp; Vendors &amp; Vaccination: All vendors, aside from our security guard, have confirmed they are vaccinated. We expect there to be a total of 8 staff and they will be wearing masks at all times. Masks: We will provide masks but guests are welcome to bring their own. Please feel free to wear your mask whenever and wherever. As of now, we are not requiring guests to wear masks.&nbsp; Social distancing &amp; Hand Sanitizer: Tables and chairs will be spaced apart. Hand sanitizer will be readily available at the venue.&nbsp; Indoors/outdoors: Our ceremony will be held outdoors and the reception will be indoors. The reception venue will be at about 35% capacity, and we plan to open doors and windows to create a cross-breeze so we have nice airflow and space throughout the venue. Testing: We encourage all guests to get tested before the wedding, whether by a professional or using an at-home test. Currently, the U.S. is experiencing a shortage of at-home tests, but we have had luck buying them on Walgreens’ website. Also, we list testing locations close to Galveston and in Galveston proper at the end of this email. Possible changes: If the pandemic sees major spikes, we may have to revisit safety protocols and make changes to this event. We will definitely keep you posted if this occurs.
