Q + A

Accomodations & Venue

Q: How do I book a tent?

A: *Please note: As of April 1, 2025, there are only 6 tents left to book at Under Canvas. If you aren't seeing any availability, you are likely making a mistake when plugging in the code. Feel free to call Under Canvas to book the North Yellowstone property directly.* Check out the "Where to Stay" page on the website for a direct booking link and more instructions. You can also visit UnderCanvas.com and select Under Canvas North Yellowstone. Select the dates September 11, 2025 – September 14, 2025. Enter "wilsonwedding" in the Group Code box on the right-hand side, just above the "Check Availability" button. Be sure to select "apply group," or the dates will show as unavailable. Then click "Check Availability." Make sure there are no spaces in the group code "wilsonwedding," and double-check that you’ve applied the group code, or it will appear as unavailable. From there, you’ll see all available tents and pricing. Please note, you must book all three nights, and the booking is non-refundable since it’s a full property buyout. If you have any issues, feel free to call Under Canvas for assistance.

Q: How many tents are there? How many people can the property sleep?

A: There are 61 tents at Under Canvas, 11 of which will be brand new. The property is only 2-3 years old so all of the tents are fairly new. If all the kids' tents are utilized, we can accommodate around 205 people. Most of the wedding guests will be staying on-site.

Q: Will there be outside guests staying at the property?

A: No! We’ve done a full property buyout from Thursday to Sunday, so only our group and staff members will be on the property. Wilson party!! Under Canvas is located on a 15,000-acre cattle ranch, so we won’t be seeing other people by chance either. We highly recommend staying on the property, not only to keep the group together but also because we need to book out all 61 tents!

Q: How long do I have to book a tent?

A: The tents are first come, first serve, and we have a large group, so if you want to book a tent, it's best to do it as soon as possible!

Q: Is it okay if I book multiple tents for my family? What if there aren't enough for the wedding party and family?

A: The immediate families of the bride and groom have already reserved their tents, so feel free to book as many tents as your family needs. However, please be mindful when booking tents with kids' tents attached—only reserve them if you plan to use the kids' tents, as many of our friends are hoping to take advantage of those as well.

Q: Can adults stay in the kids' tents?

A: Yes! We highly recommend combining your group and utilizing the kids' tents to reduce costs. The kids' tents are awesome and super cozy! They have two twin beds that can be pushed together for couples if needed. While the kids' tents don’t have restrooms, there are three individual restrooms near the lobby tent, and I'm sure you would be welcome to use the showers in nearby family or friends’ tents.

Q: What should I expect from the "glamping" experience?

A: Glamping at Under Canvas is a blend of camping with some added luxury. You’ll be sleeping in canvas tents with comfy beds with regular bed frames, but you won’t have electricity in the tents (though there are solar lights). We will have two very large generators throughout the camp and will run power lines to some of the tents. We also recommend purchasing battery-powered blow dryers for your hair and a charging block for your phones and other devices. We are going to designate a "glam tent" with electricity, hair tools, mirrors, etc. to make it easier for our lovely ladies to do their hair.

Q: Will there be bugs?

A: When we stayed last July, we didn’t see a single bug inside any of the tents we stayed in or toured! The tents are cleaned thoroughly before each stay, and in general, September isn’t a buggy time in Montana. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity mean there are usually fewer mosquitoes and insects compared to the summer months. While it’s always a good idea to bring bug spray just in case, you’ll likely find that bugs are minimal during your stay.

Q: Do all the tents have plumbing? Are there additional restrooms on the property?

A: Yes! All tents, except the kids' tents, come equipped with private bathrooms, including showers with hot water and flushing toilets. Additionally, there are three single restrooms near the lobby tent. Please note that while each tent has a private bathroom with barn doors, they are "open-air" style and not separate rooms.

Q: I don't see any hangers or closets in the tents. How am I going to hang my suit/dress?

A: We will provide hangers and garment racks in the tents so you can hang your clothes.

Q: What happens if it gets really cold?

A: Montana nights can get chilly, especially in the fall. Under Canvas provides wood-burning stoves in the tents to keep you warm and cozy. Staff can set up and light your stove for you, and each tent has a guide on how to use the stove. The wood is stored inside the tent to stay dry. For kids’ tents, which don’t have stoves, low-temperature sleeping bags will be provided. If the forecast predicts temperatures in the 30s or below, we’ll provide portable heaters for the kids’ tents.

Q: I saw the tents don’t have electricity? How am I going to do my hair?!

A: While the tents don’t have traditional electricity, they are equipped with solar-powered lights, and charging stations are available in the lobby tent. We recommend packing a power bank to charge your electronics. For hair styling, we recommend battery-powered tools, and we’ll also have steamers and hair tools available in the lobby tent if needed. We are going to have two very large generators Friday-Sunday that we can run power lines to some of the tents so you can use your hair tools, steamers, etc. We are also going to designate a "glam tent" with electricity, hair tools, mirrors, etc. to make it easier for our lovely ladies to do their hair.

Q: Will I be able to hear the music or other guests in my tent?

A: Since the tents are canvas, there’s a chance you may hear music or nearby guests. We’ll provide earplugs in each tent as part of the welcome gift, just in case.

Q: Is there water to drink in the tents?

A: Yes, the tents have clean, cold tap water. The lobby tent also has filtered water dispensers for refilling your water bottles.

Q: Will I be able to see at night? How will I find my tent?

A: The tents have dim lights, and the walkways are lit as well. If you need extra light, we recommend bringing a headlamp or flashlight. All the tent numbers are visible at night.

Q: Is there a way to make sure I get a certain tent location? What if I want to be next to my friends?

A: Once all the tents are booked, we will work with Under Canvas to group people together to make sure they are where they want to be. For example, we will have the younger party group in the tents closest to the wedding tent and music since they will most likely be up the latest, and then make sure the parent groups are in the tents by the river a bit farther away from all the noise. We will make sure you stay in the tent type that you booked. If you have any special requests, reach out to me (Haley) or Under Canvas.

Q: Some of the tents look kind of far away from the lobby tent. Is it a far walk to the lobby tent?

A: No, all of the tents are relatively close together and within a ~5-minute walk to the lobby tent. You will also have the staff available 24/7 for any of your needs, and you can text them to pick you up in a golf cart if you need a ride anywhere.

Q: Do I need to walk around with bear spray? Am I okay to walk to my tent at night by myself?

No, you do not need to walk around the property with bear spray. You are perfectly fine to walk to your tent alone at night! While Under Canvas is in bear country, we’re separated from the main bear area by a large river, and there haven’t been any bear sightings crossing the river in many, many years. Plus, we’re going to be a large, loud group, and no bears will want to join our party!

Q: Is breakfast provided?

A: We understand this trip and these tents are a pretty penny so we'd like to provide breakfast each morning for guests staying at Under Canvas. Friday morning will feature breakfast burritos and baked goods from a local bakery. Saturday will include an espresso cart from our favorite Bozeman coffee shop, along with hot bagel sandwiches from Bridger Bagels, our favorite hot bagel cart. On Sunday, we'll be hosting a farewell brunch for everyone - TBD on location and details.

Q: Can we have campfires at Under Canvas?

A: Under Canvas provides fire pits for group campfires. We’ll have a few planned fireside gatherings with s'mores, but feel free to enjoy the fire pits as a group outside of those times too. Under Canvas provides s'mores supplies each night at sunset.

Q: Can I swim or fish in the river near Under Canvas? How cold is the water?

A: Yes! The Yellowstone River is a Blue Ribbon river, meaning it’s designated as a high-quality recreational fishery. Under Canvas has a large riverfront area with walking trails that lead out to the riverbank. If you’re interested in fly fishing, there are several fly fishing shops and guides in Livingston. I’d recommend renting a fly rod for the weekend and asking the local guides which flies work best for that stretch of the river and time of year. In mid-Sept, the avg water temp is around 50-55. Pretty chilly but will feel great if the sun is out! Here is a great flyfishing guide for September fishing on the Yellowstone: https://www.montanaangler.com/montana-fly-fishing-rivers/yellowstone-river-fishing-september

Transportation & Logistics

Q: Will transportation be provided for those staying off-site?

Yes, for the ~50 guests staying off-site, we will be providing transportation each night, if needed. Under Canvas requires that transportation be arranged for off-site guests due to limited parking and liability reasons. More details will be shared closer to the event.

Q: How far is Under Canvas from Yellowstone National Park?

A: Under Canvas is about a 45-minute drive from Yellowstone National Park’s North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana.

Q: Is parking available at Under Canvas?

A: Parking is limited to guests staying at Under Canvas. We will provide transportation for guests staying off-site. More details will be shared as we get closer to the event.

Q: Should I rent a car?

A: Yes, we highly recommend renting a car, as Under Canvas is in a somewhat remote area and rideshare options like Uber and Lyft are limited. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also rent a camper through Outdoorsy.com for extended trips and camping.

Q: Where should I fly into?

A: Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is the closest airport, about a 45-minute drive from Under Canvas.

Q: Is Uber/Lyft available in Livingston?

A: Yes, but it’s limited. We recommend having alternative transportation options just in case. We will be providing transportation to and from the venue for event nights.

Do you recommend a boarding facility nearby for my pet?

Yes! We highly recommend Dog Dayz in Bozeman. It's not far from Livingston and it's an amazing place to leave your pet for the weekend. We leave our dog Meatball there all the time for both daycare and weekend boarding. They send you daily updates and we know the owner. We highly recommend this spot.

Events & Activities

Q: Are all the wedding events at Under Canvas?

A: Yes, all events will take place at Under Canvas, which is why we recommend staying on the property. We may have a farewell brunch on Sunday that will be held elsewhere—more details to come.

Q: Will the wedding be indoors or outdoors?

A: The ceremony will be completely outdoors and the reception will be held outdoors under a large tent. If the weather turns, we have tent walls and heaters to keep everyone comfortable.

Q: I'm worried about the altitude change. What should I expect?

A: Livingston is at an elevation of around 4,500 feet, so if you're coming from sea level, you may notice the higher altitude. Drink plenty of water and watch your alcohol consumption. Most people don't realize that alcohol affects you more quickly at higher elevations, so pace yourself- we have three full days of events!!! We want everyone to be on their A-game for the wedding night :)

Q: What should I expect for the wedding ceremony and reception?

A: Tons of fun, duh! The ceremony will be completely outdoors on a ridge overlooking the Yellowstone River and the reception will take place outdoors under a large tent. Comfortable shoes like cowboy boots or chunky heels are recommended since we will be on grass most of the time.

Q: What happens if the weather is terrible?

A: We’ll still go ahead with all events! Everything will take place under large tents, and we have tent walls and heaters if needed. Below you'll see the weather for Sept 13 from the last few years. It has been in the 70s and 80s dropping to the 40s at night.

Q: How many people are invited to this shindig?

A: 249 amazing people!!! It’s going to be an awesome crew. We expect about 50 guests will be staying off-site.

Q: Will there be vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free options available?

A: Yes! Please let us know of any dietary preferences or restrictions when you RSVP, and we’ll make sure to accommodate you.

Q: What’s the bathroom situation during the outdoor events?

A: Under Canvas has 3 additional single restrooms near the lobby tent, and each tent (except the kids' tents) has a private bathroom. During events, restrooms will be easily accessible and we will be within walking distance to the guest tents if you'd prefer to go to your own tent. We may also bring in a restroom trailer that will be closer to the wedding tent than the lobby restrooms. TBD

Practical Information

Q: How is the weather in Montana in September?

A: Montana weather is unpredictable! The saying here is, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes!” Days are usually mild, but evenings can get chilly, especially in the mountains. September is often the most beautiful and consistent month, with daytime temperatures in the 70s to low 80s, and nighttime temperatures in the 40s/50s. However, it can sometimes drop into the 20s (unlikely), so we recommend packing layers. Even if the forecast looks a certain way, it could be completely wrong and change the same day so pack for varying weather conditions.

Q: What should I pack for the trip?

Here’s a suggested packing list: - Wedding attire plus a warm jacket or sweater for nighttime - Comfortable shoes - Rain jacket (just in case) - Bathing suit and river clothes for river activities - River shoes (Tevas, Chacos, or water shoes like Keens) - Sunscreen and bug spray (though mosquitos are rare in September) - A power bank for charging devices if staying at Under Canvas (there’s no electricity in tents) - Reusable water bottle - Warm socks - Headlamp or flashlight for nighttime walks

Q: Will there be cell service or Wi-Fi at Under Canvas?

A: Verizon users should have cell service at Under Canvas and in most areas of Montana. Other carriers may have weaker signals. Under Canvas does not offer Wi-Fi, but we will bring our Starlink Wi-Fi if anyone needs to connect.

Q: Do I need bear spray for the weekend?

A: If you plan on doing any hikes in southwest Montana, you should carry bear spray. You cannot fly with bear spray, so you'll need to purchase it once you arrive in Montana. The best places to buy it is at the Bozeman Costco or any sporting goods stores in Bozeman or Livingston. We’ll try to bring extra bear spray to Under Canvas for those hiking around Livingston during the weekend, but we can't guarantee there will be enough. For safety, each person should ideally have their own canister of bear spray when hiking in the area.

Q: I have a medication that needs to be refrigerated. What do I do?

A: There are refrigerators in the lobby tent that you’re welcome to use. Additionally, we’ll have extra coolers and ice available.

Q: Can I bring my own alcohol to my tent?

A: Yes! You’re welcome to bring your own drinks to enjoy around the property. However, there’s a small area around the lobby tent that is within the Under Canvas beer/wine license, so technically no outside alcohol is allowed there (see pic below). If you happen to stumble into the yellow circle with an outside beverage, please put it in a cup and be discreet. We will be providing reusable cups for the weekend. There will also be beer and wine options to purchase from Under Canvas within the yellow circle if you'd like. All of our wedding events will be outside of the yellow circle and we will have beer, wine, and liquor options.

It sounds like Under Canvas only has a beer and wine license. Will there be liquor at the events?

Yes! There will be liquor at all the events. We have decided to host all of the wedding events outside of Under Canvas' beer and wine license area (yellow circle) so that we may have liquor for all the events. Our event tents will be set up in the green area (see image below). You are also allowed to have any alcohol anywhere on the property outside of the yellow circle.

Q: What’s the vibe of the weekend? Relaxed or formal?

A: The vibe of the weekend is fun and relaxed! We will get more formal for the wedding day, but for all other events we will be relaxed. You can find suggested dress codes in the Events section on the home page.

Q: What is the dress code for the wedding? What do I wear?!

The dress code for Saturday night is formal or Western formal attire. For men, a suit or a nice blazer paired with dress pants or dark-wash jeans is perfect. For women, an elegant dress, cocktail dress, or dressy separates are ideal. Feel free to incorporate elements of Western style—like bolo ties, cowboy boots, or Western-inspired accessories—while keeping the overall look polished and sophisticated. We want everyone to feel comfortable while looking their best! Keep in mind that we will be walking around on grass so choose your footwear wisely!

Q: Will there be a photographer or videographer at the wedding?

A: Yes, we will have a professional photographer and videographer capturing all the special moments. Feel free to snap your own photos, but we ask that you keep phones away during the ceremony. We will make sure to get lots of group and family shots!

Food

Q: Does Under Canvas have a restaurant?

A: Yes, Under Canvas has a small restaurant in the lobby tent that serves breakfast and dinner. However, we’ll have breakfast (for Under Canvas guests) and dinner covered each day, so you likely won’t need to use the restaurant. They also provide beer and wine for purchase at the lobby tent. We recommend grabbing a cooler in Bozeman or Livingston and bringing your own drinks to keep in your tent.

Q: What should we do for lunch?

A: If you’re not joining the float on Friday, you’ll need to grab lunch on Friday. Everyone will need to grab lunch on Saturday. Livingston is only 15 minutes away and has plenty of great dining options. If you enjoy antiquing or thrifting, Livingston is known for its thrift stores! Check out the “Things to Do” page on our site for restaurant and activity recommendations.

Q: Where can I get groceries, supplies, or alcohol near Under Canvas?

A: The nearest large grocery store is Albertsons, located about 14 minutes north of Under Canvas. It’s similar to stores like Publix or Kroger. Right next door is Murdoch’s, which is like a large Home Depot or Ace Hardware, offering camping supplies, tools, and outdoor gear. Additionally, there are plenty of gas stations for beer and wine, as well as liquor stores in Livingston. If you head to Bozeman (about 45 minutes away), you’ll find major retailers like Target, Costco, Walmart, and Lowe’s/Home Depot. You can pretty much find anything you might need there! Just a heads up, the Bozeman Costco does not have liquor, only beer and wine.

Q: What are the nearest quick food options from Under Canvas?

A: About 15 minutes north of Under Canvas, you’ll find quick food options like McDonald's, Taco Bell, Domino’s, and Pizza Hut. There are also great local restaurants in downtown Livingston, which is just a couple of minutes down the road from these fast food spots.
