Beautiful space with high arches and lots of windows; nothing else like it in Houston if you want lots of glass, sunshine and space for your guests. Doesn't need much decoration either. It's also very affordable and UH alumni get a discount, too!
I'm giving 4 stars only because the coordinator was out/didn't leave instructions for the student worker to turn on the AC or the A/V. Guests (especially those in direct sunlight or standing at the front) were hot and most in the pews could barely hear what was being said. Ultimately tho, we were happy with this venue minus the two above issues.
Keiry helped us plan the perfect wedding ceremony at A.D. Bruce. The main chapel is so beautiful that we didn’t need many decorations at all, and we were able to borrow all the essentials for entryway/welcome décor. She even allowed us to use the beautiful meditation chapel to steam my long dress and take some photos like a first look with my dad. Keiry wasn’t there for the rehearsal or the day of our wedding since we had student helpers instead, and they were awesome! They kept everything on time and managed behind the scenes, our whole time at the chapel from getting ready to photos was so smooth. Everyone had reserved parking at the lot in front of the building, and our photographers found all the perfect spots for photos. Great discount for alumni too.
The chapel is beautiful and we knew as soon as we visited that this was our ceremony venue! We fell in love with the large arched windows that let in beautiful natural light. The staff at UH was very responsive and answered emails promptly whenever we had any questions. They require you to use one of their set ceremony times (we did 4:30) but this was no problem, we just created our timeline around the ceremony. On their website they have sample timelines for you to review. They have a designated parking lot and aux cord audio connections, which we had no issues with. They also have a piano in the chapel, which we used for our processional music. Our guests all raved about how beautiful the chapel was. It accommodates large guest counts and has a nice long aisle for you to have your bridal moment!
As soon as my husband and I walked into University Chapel, we knew it was where we wanted to get married. The Chapel reminded us of churches we grew up in and immediately provided me a sense of calm and peace. We especially loved the floor to ceiling arches and windows which let in so much natural light and greenery and helped us to have that element of nature even though we were indoors. We received many compliments from guests who enjoyed watching the sunset during our ceremony. We also liked how centrally located the Chapel was for our guests who were traveling from all over Houston and beyond and that the rental fee was very reasonable. The Chapel representative, Keiry, was very professional in all of her communication with us and helped us to quickly problem solve any questions or concerns we had. We were also able to visit the Chapel in person as many times as we needed ahead of time to plan for decorations, photos, etc. and I was able to easily do bridal portraits for no extra fee. My only recommendation is that if you’re considering having your ceremony here, double check any big university events ahead of time if possible, as we accidentally scheduled our wedding the same day as Homecoming, which created some extra traffic and delays, but the Chapel staff was very accommodating. Thank you to Keiry and her student workers for helping create a very special day for us!
Everyone we worked with at the Religion Center was incredibly helpful and kind for our big day. They were quick to respond to questions and were patient when we had our final walk-through of the space that went a little over.
It's a beautiful chapel that requires little decoration because the lighting is ON POINT 90% of the time. I say 90% of the time because...
I would highly recommend using one of their suggested times for a ceremony. We had our rehearsal at 6 p.m. the Friday before our June wedding and quickly learned why they recommend a 4:30 and then a 7 o'clock ceremony. The sun shines so bright into the chapel from behind the altar that it does become difficult to see. Luckily, our ceremony was at 4:30, so our guests weren't affected, but by the time we got to pictures around 5, the photographer was fighting the sun. Definitely not a deal breaker, but something to keep in mind when planning photos.
We also had an issue with the aux cord for music, but by the time the issue happened, half of the bridal party was up the aisle. I would recommend having an extra handy.
Other than that, the space was perfect!
We were so happy we found this place to have our wedding ceremony! I was looking for a chapel but as we are not affiliated with any churches in Houston this was a difficult task. I happened to stumble upon AD Bruce and it was perfect. The chapel is beautiful with the floor to ceiling windows, and the staff provided microphones and audio hookups. They also have their own parking lot so you don't have to worry about guest parking, especially during a football game.
Such a beautiful chapel. The people who we worked with were very kind, and stayed out of our way. They gave us the microphones and plug ins we needed and any tables and easels. The chapel made for BEAUTIFUL pictures.
The chapel was beautiful and the coordinators were helpful, easy to work with, and always available to answer questions.
Being a UH alum, made this the perfect place to get married. We got a discount for the rental and they are super accommodating. Both my husband and I are not religious, so this chapel was perfect because it did not have any religion specific symbols. This allowed us a comfortable setting to have a non traditional ceremony with the chapel look we were going for. The floor to ceiling windows are amazing for photos and the staff is great!
I could not have picked a more beautiful chapel to have my wedding. It is a small, quiet almost antique looking chapel that is surrounded by glass walls and so elegant! Would definitely recommend to everyone!!
Also extremely affordable. I was a student at the U.H. campus so I only had to pay $500.
Nice value for price
This was a beautiful venue and was extremely affordable.
The most beautiful location in Houston for a wedding. Great price, breathtaking pipe organ. I had my dual(Baptist/Catholic)wedding on June 9, 2012 at the A.D. Bruce Religion Center at sunset. My wedding party included 8 bridesmaids and 8 groomsmen... and we all fit! This staff is so great to work with, very flexible, I was even able to do a portion of my bridals in the church. Awesome place!
If you want something fancy then this probably isn't the place for you but it was perfect for us! The chapel was nice with windows and white columns all around. Very spacious and can hold over 200 people. We also had a Vietnamese Tea Ceremony and hors d'oeuvres on the 2nd floor atrium and it worked out wonderfully. Overall worth more than what we paid since we got the alumni discount too! I paid 1/3 of the price here that I would pay to rent out another location for the same amount of time.
I was very pleased with the Religion Center. The staff was very helpful and assisted me with all of my needs. I really appreciated the kind and exceptional service they provided.
Beautiful Chapel!
No reception area, bubble, sparklers, or birdseed allowed fyi....
I graduated from University of Houston and for some reason in the planning process, this venue didn't cross my mind. It wasn't until my bridesmaid, also alumni, suggested it. I called immediately!! With my alumni discount, this venue was only $500. You can't beat that for the amount of history and beauty this venue offers. My wedding was at 7:15pm and the view of the sunset behind my husband I was absolutely breathtaking!! Having worked and lived on campus as an undergrad, I already knew Bruce Twenhafel, he is great to work with!! If you are on a budget, keep in mind reliant, medical center, and downtown venues are much more expensive in regards to your reception location. Luckily because I was a Resident Assistant, I was able to rent one of the dorm ballrooms for pretty cheap. Definitely check out the Hilton on campus, and if you are familiar with the campus, I'm sure you know all of the other places to have a reception. Again, my wedding was absolutely beautiful!! (book ahead of time, it fills up fast!!)
The Bruce Religion center was wonderful for our wedding!!! They really made sure we could do what we needed in the chapel and allowed us a little extra time to set up. Overall it was a great experience!
The chapel was beautiful and looked great in wedding photos. Loved all the natural light. All I added for the ceremony was two floral arrangements on the altar. Also, since I was a UH alum, it was extremely affordable.
The chapel itself was beautiful and required very little decorations. If you love grass, trees, and flowers the outside view is phenomenal. The only concern i had was the speaker sound system. soungs with lyrics sounded muffled but instrumental sounded good.
The AD Bruce Religion Center was the best venue. It was beautiful backdrop for my special day. The wedding coordinator, the organist, and everyone else that worked at the religion center were so well organized and helped my day run smoothly.
This venue is great, especailly if you love windows. But, during my wedding the air conditioner broke. After sweating it out (literaly) at the alter, they didn't give us any money back. But, it wsa reasonably priced in the first place.
A lot nicer than i thought it would be.
The only downfall is the area where the bride gets ready. And the isle is narrow
But over all pretty nice.
My advice dont run late :)
The chapel at UH is very beautiful. It has glass windows all around and lets in a lot of light. Very beautiful!
