A Girl and A Camera Photography is a San Francisco, California-based photography studio specializing in weddings and milestone events. Passionate about telling people’s stories, through artistic, real, and timeless images. Inspired by Love, all their images are hand-crafted from start to finish.
Although the girl behind the camera, Jennifer Michelson, started this venture in 2008, she has been around cameras her whole life. Her dad was a photographer and she credits him as her teacher and mentor. While some people write books or make music, she found her voice in photography. Through the lens of photography, she reiterates that relationships and moments matter. This is and remains the core principle for all the weddings they service.
Jennifer and the team are available for travel worldwide and also offer different packages to suit your needs. If you are camera-shy, they will help with the posing - although they aim primarily to document true, authentic moments. Feel absolutely free to get lost in each other as they capture the magic and help you make memories that last a lifetime.

nds. What they don't tell you is, at least from my experience, your PHOTOGRAPHER is the one who actually guides you through the day. You look to them through every moment. They let you know what's coming next. They're the ones who ultimately keep you calm and on schedule. Even through unexpected mini catastrophes, LOL. They're the ones whose energy you will feed off of, and the one who will stick with you. As you move through the day, and as you look back on it. Jennifer was absolutely amazing beyond words. Her calm and helpful demeanor, understanding and gentle, but confident and reassured. Jennifer's guidance throughout the day kept me sane and confident too, and ultimately able to live in every moment and just enjoy the day as it unfolded. And oh my god, the PHOTOS!! When we were searching for a photographer, I told my family and friends that if we booked A Girl and A Camera Photography, I would know that I wouldn't have to have a concern in the world about our photos. I would KNOW that we didn't have to worry, and that they would come out stunning. That's how amazing her portfolio is. And man, I was so right! Jennifer was able to creatively guide us through gorgeous portraits, and her abilities brought to life such stunning posed and candid shots alike, of us and of our loved ones. The way she uses light, and has the ability to frame and capture moments and emotions so incredibly, beautifully, and purely. I just can not gush enough! She even put together an absolutely STUNNING sneak peek slideshow of our photos before the big drop, and words literally can not express how perfect it was. I was sobbing, and just so full of emotion getting to play back all of those incredibly special moments and beautifully captured memories. Seriously, do yourself a favor and hire Jennifer! I just KNOW that you will not be disappointed. She is the BEST!

ing input on what a feasible timeline would look like for the events and shots we wanted. She provided an honest assessment of how the sunlight would affect our photos in the morning and suggested workarounds for harsh lighting - this proved to be very good advice. Both before and after the wedding, she was very responsive and easy to get in touch with.
On the day of, we had two events (it was a multicultural wedding) and Jennifer and her assistant were super efficient, professional, and wonderful to work with throughout the entire day. They were definitely troopers for sticking with us from morning to evening! Jennifer also had a great rec for a videographer at the last minute, which we really appreciated.
I am not photogenic and am generally pretty camera-shy - so I definitely do not know how to pose for pictures. If you are similar, you'll be in great hands with Jennifer. She eased me out of my awkwardness and our pictures came out so beautifully.

After our Zoom chat, we were thrilled to work with Jennifer. She explained the process and was excited about our day. We knew we were in good hands. She expertly guided us from the engagement session to location choice right up until the wedding with timeline help and experience of how a wedding day moves.

Jennifer was a great help leading up to the wedding - we wanted a bus to take us to a great spot for photos with our wedding party. Jennifer not only made suggestions on locations but provided pros and cons for the locations we originally had in mind. This part is why it was important to us to have a San Francisco based photographer - we needed someone that just gets it.
Jennifer was very honest throughout the process - from the amount of coverage that we’d need to when our photos would be ready and delivered. Photography was at the top of our list of vendors that we thought were important - it was actually the most important. Based on previous work of Jennifer’s we knew Girl and A Camera was perfect for us. We saw elegant and classy photos and only hoped that ours would come out to be the same - and they did!

he experience felt very personal and we think that came out in the finished product.
After a short Zoom meeting, we were locked in with Jennifer and had landed on a few possible locations for our engagement shoot, dependent on weather. When we arrived the day of, it was clear that as an SF local, she knew the location well and had an itinerary in mind. She whisked us from place to place, regularly checking her watch to make sure we would hit Fort Point right at sunset. Despite that awareness along the way, we never felt rushed at any one location.
Both my wife and I are pretty awkward in front of a camera, but Jennifer had a way about her that set us at ease, giving specific prompts for what we should be doing, at the same time fading into the background so we felt alone.
The day of the wedding was even more of a breeze, if you can believe that. Jennifer and her second shooter, James, were both prompt and friendly with every member of our wedding parties and families. As before, they each had a way of making everyone feel comfortable before fading into the background to capture every moment.
When we got our photos back, we couldn’t believe 1) the quality and sheer volume of photographs—holy sh*t; and 2) just how many of those emblematic moments they were able to capture with just two of them circulating. was really important for us and was the first vendor we wanted to book after securing our wedding date. My husband and I had relocated away from the Bay Area, so when it came time for wedding planning not only were we looking for a photographer that would capture the small and candid moments that make your wedding day special, but we really wanted photos that would capture the natural beauty of some of our favorite places in the world, the place where we met and fell in love. Jennifer's portfolio had so many gorgeous shots that highlighted the uniqueness of different places in and around San Francisco, but more importantly she seemed to capture so many authentic moments which really resonated with us.

But Jennifer's style goes beyond simply documenting the wedding and couple; her photos are truly art that would hang proudly in a gallery and our home. She delivered 2 series (Engagement and Wedding) with some truly stunning shots that we will proudly display for years to come.
We didn't initially consider an engagement shoot, but very glad we did. In hindsight, during the wedding day, the person you're going to spend the most intimate time with (outside of your spouse) is the photographer. The engagement shot gave us (the couple) some time to get comfortable with her and having professional pictures taken, and she made it special. It's clear she loves what she does, and her creative guidance to us made the best use of the setting and lighting available.
Wedding day, Jennifer and her assistant again were wonderful; she was able to strike the delicate balance of photographing us and giving us time at the party. She has a rare combination of talents: finding the best light, guiding us and groups into a naturally good shot, vs. posing a certain way, and keeping us on track for the day. Jennifer's creative eye for the light, setting, venue, timing were impeccable. And her friendly demeanor and guidance had us looking our best. xceptional talent, especially at building small narratives within her photos. Her images capture moments and feelings instead of objects and people. Jennifer has a wonderful ‘altarside manner’. I can see now that it’s really her personality and skill at posing her subjects that lends her photos that extra bit of magic.
I can’t name anyone that I know in California whose wedding photos were cooler than mine. Everyone was blown away by our portfolio and I’m now seeing our guests including their photos from our wedding in their Christmas cards. Quite the compliment.
We presented Jennifer with the unique challenge of posing a gay couple (us!), which obviously creates some tension with the gendered dynamic that’s present in a lot of traditional male-female wedding portraits. She seemed to have absolutely no difficulties thinking about how to play with tradition to make our photos feel like they really captured our love and its unique energy.
I hope that you choose to work with Jennifer, especially if your gut says ‘wow’ after looking over her online portfolio. She’s a wedding photographer for people who already love photography and know how to spot an artist with a good eye. If you want wedding photos that are elevated and thoughtful, I wouldn’t bother looking at anyone else unless Jennifer is already booked.

Aside from not knowing our next steps regarding our wedding party, Jennifer was flexible and kind to work with during such a stressful era for us. literally every moment of our special day in the most beautiful way. We found ourselves admiring every single picture (which is a lot to say about ~1700 of them). She captured the special little moments and expressions through her artistic lens. I was so impressed that she even managed to get beautiful shots of toddlers and small kids which is a challenging task in itself, without a whole wedding unfolding.

and responsive to our many questions and requests, especially given the uncertain COVID area, where we had to change our plans multiple times. After a year's delay, we ultimately decided to partake in a micro-wedding with a photoshoot around the great outdoors of SF, which Jennifer wholeheartedly embraced.
Speaking to her invaluable experience in shooting around the city, she astutely recommended scenery at Land's End that perfectly encapsulated natural beauty as our backdrop, and even laid out suggested times for each stop so that we caught the sunset at just the right time. Jennifer was also wonderful to Zoe, our scaredy-dog who is jittery to most people and things, but somehow acquiesced and posed peacefully in front of her camera. She also put both of us at ease with her deft and gentle instructions on how to pose and act naturally, which was a grand accomplishment as neither were natural models. We became ourselves under her guidance and felt totally comfortable in our own skin. In our opinion, Jennifer’s authenticity was the key to her success in capturing moments of such simultaneous splendor and candor, even more so than her incredible technical talents with lighting and imagery.

We heeded the advice, spent several days looking through lots of profiles and portfolios, and found ourselves constantly drawn back to Jennifer's work - to us, her photos were artsy in all the best ways, romantic yet not cheesy, fun yet not forced. Long story short, Jennifer photographed not only our wedding, but also our tea ceremony (she gave us flexibility to split up the hours in our package - #win) as well as an engagement session (highly recommend if you're awkward in front of the camera like we are - Jennifer is a great coach!), and every time we look through our wedding photos, we're SO glad we dug ever slightly deeper into our budget so we could have Jennifer and her unique eye and sense of style. I figured out what I wanted from our photos was first and foremost, for them to be timeless. I wanted to see the breathlessness of our day in a photo, I wanted to see our friends and family having a great time, in a way that was clearly above a simple cellphone snapshot, and was done in such impeachable taste that it would always look good.
My [now] wife and I got that and more from Jennifer, we were blow away at the moments she captured so perfectly, and even more amazed how she made us look SO good. There's a warm, easy sense to her portraits of us that we didn't expect but so pleasantly received from Jenn. We loved our venue in Monterey, and Jennifer's awesome eye made the best use of it -- truly epic.
