My experience with Affairs in the Air (AFA) was a nightmare from start to finish. The owner, Carolynn, was one of the most unprofessional individuals I’ve ever dealt with. This review reflects my experience with this vendor, and you better believe I’m coming to the table with receipts.
We rented Selby Gardens’ South Lawn for our ceremony and cocktail hour, and the North Lawn Ballroom for our reception. Since AFA is the exclusive lighting and décor vendor for Selby Gardens, we had no choice but to hire her. Unfortunately, this exclusivity left us at her mercy, and it quickly became clear that her priority was keeping our money—not providing service.
Selby informed us 23 days before our wedding that, due to storm damage, the South Lawn was inaccessible. They offered us a partial refund if we moved our wedding to the North Lawn, which was also severely storm-damaged but still “operational.” We declined, as it was beat up, and we were only planning to use the indoor ballroom. Selby ultimately refunded us in full due to the circumstances.
We found a new venue 10 minutes down the road that allowed us to keep our date. The new venue recognized AFA and said Carolynn had worked there before, so we were thrilled! But when we proposed relocating and renegotiating her services, she flat-out refused, claiming that she didn’t have insurance for the venue—a requirement never mentioned in our original contract.
Despite a clear Force Majeure clause in AFA’s contract, Carolynn insisted we weren’t entitled to an adjustment or refund. Her reasoning? Selby was still hosting weddings on the salt-burned, leaf-bare North Lawn—even though our contracted space, the South Lawn, was deemed unsafe and unusable by Selby!
Our AFA contract states: “If renegotiated, a full credit of your retainer will be applied to the new and updated contract. If your event is rescheduled due to a conflict on your part, we will only be able to accommodate you if the new date is available on our calendar.” We kept the same date and time, and she was available. This wasn’t a conflict on our part—it was Force Majeure. Up until her refusal to cooperate, we never asked for a refund; we simply wanted her to fulfill the contract.
We even offered to pay for her insurance to retain her services and were happy to renegotiate the contract for any upcharges or changes. Instead of collaborating, Carolynn doubled down on her dismissive and rude behavior. Her communication was curt, unprofessional, and often grammatically incomprehensible.
When it became clear she was going to deny service and keep all our money (we paid in full), we involved a lawyer. Carolynn suddenly offered us half of our deposit back if we signed an agreement not to leave a bad review. I obviously didn’t sign that or accept the offensively low offer because she DID NO WORK.
Carolynn’s behavior was appalling. She showed zero regard for the contract, her professional obligations, or the difficult situation we were navigating. Every other vendor adapted with grace and compassion. AFA, on the other hand, was unethical, uncooperative, and showed no respect for their clients.
Brides and grooms, my advice is to avoid Affairs in the Air at all costs. Never pay a vendor in full until services are rendered, and always buy event insurance. Wedding planning is stressful enough without dealing with someone who disregards contracts, customer service, and basic human decency.
Affairs in the Air was wonderful to work with! We were married at the Ritz-Carlton Beach Club in Sarasota and used Affairs in the Air to add twinkle lights throughout our entire reception area, including our open air patio. Kristina was extremely easy to work with and responsive. Would absolutely recommend Affairs in the Air to anyone looking for unique lighting for their wedding!
Affairs in the Air was the best! They were extremely helpful in creating my vision and even sent pictures of different items that had created before in my venue to make it easier for us to visualize what it would be like on our wedding day! The process to book was super easy and everything was done timely! Couldn’t say thank you enough!
Affairs in the Air made my wedding dreams come true! Due to covid we ended up having to postpone twice and they were very accommodating and understanding. They did not charge me more money because of the inconvenience even thought the wedding had to be rescheduled to a new year. Their suggestions and design skills were brilliant! The light up wall behind my cake added a magical touch along with the swoops on the ceiling. They truly capture your dream. Highly highly recommend.
Affairs in the Air made my wedding dreams come true! Due to covid we ended up having a small backyard wedding. I envisioned a winter wonderland with twinkle lights and boy did they deliver! I couldn’t believe what they were able to create while being extremely affordable. The team at Affairs in the air were professional, communicative and brilliant with their lighting design skills! Highly recommend and hope to work with them again in the future.
We worked with Affairs in the Air for nearly two years as we planned our wedding. With the 2020 pandemic at play, we encountered many changes and adjustments not only to our date but the entire event design. The Affairs in the Air team was always easy to work with, and they provided excellent images of set ups at our venue so that we could see how our event could look as well. Our wedding event design was absolutely perfect. We highly recommend Affairs in the Air.
This company was amazing. I originally hired them for a country club reception, but ha to switch to a backyard tent wedding due to COVID and they went above and beyond for us. They provided us with string lighting on the ceiling, a sweetheart table backdrop, and up lighting with a remote control to pick our colors and dim the lights. They made the tent so beautiful. It was a dream. Their set up staff was also so nice! I highly recommend them!
Highly recommend Affairs in the Air for pipe and drape. Carolyn did a fabulous job draping the Ca d Zan room at the Sarasota Ritz for our daughter's wedding. The room has many lovely windows, but we wanted privacy behind the DJ with a solid curtain and they created 2 ivory billows behind the Sweet Heart table. It looked great with up lighting on it.
We hired Affairs in the Air to hang drapery and lighting with a dimmer in our 20x80 frame tent for our wedding on Anna Maria Island this Spring, and I highly recommend them.
After seeing the underside of many tents, I knew I wanted something more elegant for our wedding, however, I was surprised to learn how much drapery and lighting typically costs! After shopping around, it was clear that Affairs in the Air had the most professional-looking drapery for the most reasonable prices.
They were very communicative and helpful. I provided a photo of the style I was looking for, and AITA was able to provide photos of their own work that was very similar. In the end, our tent was so beautiful and absolutely surreal - and worth every last penny. We received so many compliments on it, and it really transformed the entire space. I’m so glad that we worked AITA into our limited budget.
AITA also did a great job working with us and our tent vendor, U.S. Tent, to determine a timeline for setup and teardown. They arrived on time and had the drapery installed and also removed by the designated times. Thank you, Affairs in the Air, for making our wedding space so beautiful!
I contacted them last year to talk about the wedding decor that I had in mind. I signed a contract with them because they were able to nail what I wanted and that was just by talking on the phone and by email since I was having an out of town wedding. Everyone I spoke to from Affairs in the air was extremely friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I had to cancel my wedding since I became pregnant. They were so understanding and even refunded a part of my payment back to me which is something other places aren't willing to do. I have seen there work first hand and I LOVE what they do. When I renew my vows hopefully a few years from now I will def hire them to do my decor. Thank you for everything especially to you Kristina
Affairs in the Air provided draping and lighting for our wedding at IMG Golf club. I was extremely pleased with this company and the work they provided. They were a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. They also provided the hanging of lanterns in a large tree outside for our ceremony. They were very helpful in making my vision come to life. Affairs in the Air helped to provide the extra detail that made our wedding beautiful!
I was very disappointed that this vendor, of ALL the vendors I worked with, showed me ZERO understanding or customer service when I had to give 7 months notice of cancellation due to the entire wedding being called off. The amount of notice I gave them was ample time to replace the date. Extremely greedy and terrible experience. Don't expect this company to be understanding, I can't imagine working with a company like this on my actual wedding day. they do.not.care.
This company was so easy to work with, and they were able to put together exactly what I had imagined. They even offered to leave up some beautiful decor from a wedding right before mine for no extra charge. They are awesome!
Affairs in the Air fully transformed the ballroom at the Hyatt Regency! They arranged floor to ceiling pipe and drape around the perimeter of the room - it was absolutely gorgeous! They did blush colored uplighting which looked so wonderful in the room. We would highly recommend them to anyone looking for decor!
The work done by these people is so beautiful. I had my whole room done in white drapery on the ceiling with twinkle lights and on the walls with a beautiful blush color up lighting and the room was stunning. Every single one of our guests complimented on how luxurious the room looked. I highly recommend this company for any drapery and lighting needs.
Don t hesitate to use affairs in the air if you want to have a nicely decorated wedding... Extremely professional, on time and quality finishing... Highly recommended
We loved the twinkle lights at our wedding at the beautiful Powel Crosley Estate in Sarasota, Florida! The lights added a romantic and elegant feel to the already beautiful location.
Affairs in the air did a great job with our lighting. My favorite were the chandeliers in the trees which gave the enchanted feel we were looking for.
Affairs in the Air completely transformed my destination wedding venue into a beautifully illuminated dream!!The ceiling was covered in cream fabric with white lights underneath and the staricase/porch area had white lights covered in tule....simply gorgeous!! Very friendly and easy to work with!
Carolyn and the Affairs in the Air crew did a marvelous job providing a romantic atmosphere at our wedding at Mixon's. The lighting and draping designs they created truly gave the wedding the little something the space needed to make it a picture perfect day!
Affairs in the Air turned the Lido Beach grand Ballroom into an enchanted fairytale. I told them I wanted it to be chic, sassy, modern nightclub look with nothing but billowing fabrics hanging and blue lighting. Without a doubt Carolyn and her team delivered! Amazing Amazing Amazing!
Thank you so much

We had a huge tent outdoors set up with big lanterns over the dance floor. We loved the set-up! Amazing to see how quickly it all went up and how many people they had for set up. Looked great!
Affairs in the air!
Wonderful people to work with. Great price! Can turn a decent room into a beautiful one!!! We loved what they did to our reception hall!
Truly transformed the yacht club into a perfect setting for a romantic wedding. Thank you for softening the club and really making it special for us!
I was very impressed with the lighting and ceiling draping, very beautiful.
Affairs in the Air came in last minute and transformed my parent's backyard into a fairytale. They draped Christmas lights from the patio to the trees and all of the guests were in awe of how amazing it looked. They were professional, kind and efficient.
Everyone thought they did such great work that my dad should keep the lights up forever, they were truly that beautiful.
