His musical education comprised all sorts of genres, from the smooth sounds of bossa nova to dramatic pieces from Bach. When he was 16, he was taken under the wing of renowned flamenco guitarist Diego Corriente. His performing career began soon after. In 2003, he left his work to commit to being a musician full-time. To support his chosen career, Alex Guillen went back to school in San Diego Mesa College where he received a qualification in the liberal arts and music.
