(Written by my husband) My wife and I began taking weekly private lessons at Arthur Murray four months before our wedding with the intention of pulling off an awesome dance in front of our friends and family. While my wife had a dance background, I had avoided dancing for most of my life because of feeling self-conscious on the dance floor. The weekly private and group lessons gave me the confidence and skill to actually get out on the dance floor and go for it with pretty much any kind of music.
On our wedding day we had a fully choreographed dance routine that wowed our audience, and we went into it without any nerves, but rather with confidence and poise. This was thanks to practicing at home, attending free group classes and performing in front of our peers and instructors at Arthur Murry.
Even after our spectacular wedding dance, my wife and I are continuing to take lessons at Arthur Murray. We love learning how to move together and feeling our progress at weekly dance parties. This is largely thanks to the instructors who give the feedback you need, encourage you as you improve, and nudge you into challenging yourself and getting outside your comfort zone which is critical for a performative art such as dancing. The instructors not only know their stuff, but they’re a lot of fun too.
Bottom line, dancing is fun, it’s physical as you’ll learn how to hold and move your body, you’ll get the mental challenge of constantly learning and performing in front of others, and you’ll get to actually look good out on the dance floor. Arthur Murray has been a supportive, inviting atmosphere for us and dancing has been a unique, shared experience that my wife and I will continue to enjoy throughout our lives.
I want to start by saying mostly everyone we had worked with at Arthur Murray for the most part was very friendly and professional. We did have one instructor who was incredibly pushy and a bit abrasive, however for the remaining classes we stuck with a different instructor who we felt we clicked better with. What was frustrating from our end is our class time was during their studio class time, so we were stuck in a tiny corner in the studio but would frequently run in to dancers from their main class. Another thing that complicated our session was since their main class was going on, we were only able to practice to our first dance song once throughout the 45 minute appointment, and during one of our visits we didn't get to practice to the music at all. Finally, one of the most frustrating parts of working with Arthur Murray was that none of the previous instructors brought up until our 3rd visit that our song didn't have a true 8-count beat, and the tempo had some pretty significant variations making it very difficult to choreograph a dance to. Had we known this at the first visit we may have been more understanding, but this was not brought to our attention until halfway through out package. Ultimately, we scrapped our package after 4 visits because we felt that our first dance was more of an 'after thought' for the instructors of Arthur Murray.
We had a wonderful experience with our instructor and other Arthur Murray staff! My fella was so awesome to agree to dance lessons so we could have a little piece for our first dance. It is expensive so try to get the most of all that they offer for social dances ect while you are members. Our first dance music is cut for us so that was nice too! If you want a fun thing to do together before the big day I recommend lessons!
After a disastrous attempt at group waltz lessons, my fiance and I found ourselves at Arthur Murray in Edina. As complete novices, we were a little nervous to begin dance lessons - especially private lessons! - but Bethany and the rest of the Arthur Murray team set us at ease. Our 10 lesson package was definitely a splurge, but we put in a lot of hard work and attended 3-4 lessons a week (between the privates with Bethany and group classes with other instructors). It was a significant time commitment during the busy lead up to our wedding, but well worth it!
We pulled off a rumba to "Let's Stay Together," and not only did we impress our family and friends, but we also got some of our favorite photos from the entire day during our dance! My parents took dance lessons at an Arthur Murray studio in North Carolina to prepare for the wedding as well, and it was fun to compare what we were learning each week. Bethany was patient, encouraging, and supportive throughout the entire process.
A few months after the wedding, we dusted off our dancing shoes as guests at another wedding. We felt totally confident on the dance floor and had an absolute blast showing off what we remembered from class!
We had a great time taking dance lessons from Arthur Murray. It's hard to know how many lessons you need to take to perfect your wedding dance, and they will recommend way more than you need. Be sure you are strict with your budget because they will pitch you more and more and it gets so expensive! 6-8 lessons will be enough if you have any musical or athletic experience.
My husband and I didn't need, or want, to learn a choreographed dance for our 1st Dance at our Wedding reception, but then again, we didn't want to do the JR High rock-back-and-forth on the dance floor either, so we bought a package of 6 lessons from Arthur Murray. The price was steep, and I'm not sure I would pay that much for dance lessons again, but the lessons did relieve the stress and nervousness of the 1st Dance, and we both felt confident in our first dance. Theresa, our instructor, was wonderful -- she was great to work with -- knowledgeable and fun, she made us feel at home during our lessons, and was a great teacher. We accomplished what we set out to do with our lessons, with the added bonus of learning how to dip -- which gave our photographer some stunning photo-ops.
Theresa and Trent are the most amazing dance instructors. I took lessons for a year with my husband and we had the most amazing dance. They also got a chance to see my hubbie and me argue over who is doing to the correct moves and who isn't. Somehow they also got a chance to be our therapist when we were upset or off (and our dancing was showing it) They are amazing!
The girl we worked with was great but we felt that the lessons were a rip off. THe first lesson was 40 minutes, 10 of which we were dancing. Waste of $ and time.
We had the best time at dance lessons. And you can find great deals with Grupon and Citycut
We loved taking dance lessons! Neither one of us had any previous dance experience but that didn't matter. Our instructor took what we wanted to acomplish and helped us come up with a great 1st dance. we go so many compliments on it! We had so much fun that we are continueing oru lesson even after the wedding!
We learned a couple of dances and the price was very affordable. We got a deal off the website. the DJ said it was the best dance he had seen all season
We didn't think we needed lessons at first, but then got had a couple and signed up for more! We choose the song, about 2 min, and then went out and wow'd the crowd. It made me feel better to know we wouldn't be doing the "Junior high rocking back and forth" thing but instead gave the audience something to watch. Lessons were fun, JD never made us feel in adequate or inferior, always cheered us on, was a kind, gentle teacher and we had SO much fun at our first dance. Also, dancing connects you two in a way I never expected, it was time for us during the busy wedding planning time and we had time to focus on on another. It was good for dance & good for our relationship.
Going to Arthur Murray was actually my husband's idea. He wanted to surprise everyone with a nice moving dance. I just wanted to not fall over in front of everyone. Although they aren't the cheapest place to get lesson the private lessons are fabulous. They have a studio downstairs that you can use that makes it so much more relaxing to dance. I was very self-conscious about my dancing abilities. But, our instructor, Heather, helped me understand that I just need to find the rhythm and the rest would come naturally. We ended up doing 3 private lessons along with some group lessons and had an absolute blast. Definitely something that we will continue to do in the future.
My husband and I love taking lessons here. Our instructor is Rachel. We like dancing so much that we signed up for another year of lessons. Dancing is so much fun, and also a great bonding experience.
I wasn't planning on taking dance lessons but there was a deal through our local newspaper the Star Tribune. Our teacher Brooks was wonderful and patient. He worked with our chosen first dance song to Metallica's Nothing Else Matters to make it a easy to follow dance that made us look good. We paid for one extra lesson where he taught us some swing to help us though the rest of the night dancing is was a very positive experience for both of us.
Too much money and our instructor was not knowledgeable. We received further dance personal dance lessons from a friend for way less money and he knew how to instruct.
This seemed like the best place to go to get dance lessons before our wedding, but they wanted us to buy a package with them for over 3,000. Crazy! We went to a couple lessons and then said we were done with just paying the specific lessons.
Arthur Murray did a great job providing us lessons for our wedding dance. We enjoyed our coach and felt very comfortable during lessons. The group lessons were uncomfortable and we didn't like having to rotate partners so frequently. Price was also very steep.
My husband and I are not dancers. We only had a dance at our reception to please my parents, who know how to dance and greatly it. They gave us a one-week membership as a gift, which included two private lessons with an instructor, one group lesson, and one practice dance. We both attended our first lesson with trepidation, but our instructor quickly put us at ease. She listended to the song we'd chosen for our first dance and selected a traditional but easy dance to go with it (foxtrot). The group lesson built upon what we se taught us, as did the practice dance. We polished it up a bit during our final lesson, and even though we didn't dance perfectly at our wedding, we were confident and didn't look at our feet or step on each other's toes! I highly recommend them.
We learned basic steps. We probably would have done more if the staff weren't so pushy with buying packages.
We signed up for a package with 6 private dance lessons and all the group lessons we could attend in between our private sessions. Our instructors were so fun and helpful. My husband and I definitely had 2 left feet going into the studio but we never felt awkward or ashamed of our dancing ability. Everyone is so welcoming and we hope to continue dancing even after the wedding!
I was in the Bronze level I but my husband couldn't figure out the dance steps. Our teacher Eva specially designed the dance for us so it was not very complicated for my husband but looked very nice. Our first dance was foxtrot and swing mixed. We really impressed lots of people.
The reason I didn't give 5 stars is we wish the studio has separate room for people take private lesson since my husband didn't feel comfortable to dance in front of other people at very beginning.
