Now for the bad. There was so much bad.
I paid a $525 cleaning fee for this group of 9 stay. Sandlin knew we were bringing our own chef and assured me she could use the chef’s kitchen in the barn. WHAT A JOKE. The fridge was disgusting (see photos). The counters were covered in rat poop and pee (photos). After scrubbing for hours I was still getting nasty napkins (see photos). I found a mouse in the trash can we had to bring out to the field and free there. There was rat poop piled up all over the cabinets (see photos). IT WAS UNSANITARY. I cleaned for hours although I was charged a $525 cleaning fee that was never returned.
I was initially very shocked. I do excellent research for trips and read all reviews. This place had 5 star reviews. Well now I know why. Upon arrival and after she heard our unsanitary kitchen complaints she tried to get my group to sign a waiver (see photos). This waiver waives your right to leave a bad review. It’s so unenforceable in so many ways. So I told all 9 ladies not to sign it. Not that it would have been enforceable anyways. But it was glaringly obvious in reading this that this is why there are no online reviews that are bad. She’s scaring people out of leaving bad reviews with this waiver.
DO NOT COME HERE WITH DOGS! When we arrived on the fridge and in the “welcome” book (which was more a book of threats and fines) it said that she would kill your dog if it barked. (see photos of exact language).
Now the real bad. She literally almost killed a guest of ours. One lady had a heart condition. We were guaranteed upon booking and before paying heaters would be provided because we are from CO and know that there are 40 degree swings in May. We get there to some rigged up little buddies (2 per tent) to a huge propane tank (not the ones meant for it because those can’t be refilled and are expensive so again Sandlin cutting corners with no regard to human life). The rigged heaters leaked the first night (surprise). There was NO CARBON MONOXIDE detectors. We were lucky we woke up or we all would have died. We woke up to the propane leak screaming like a tea kettle. The whole tent was full of propane. Some of us couldn’t move, some were sick, some very sick throwing up, all of us were very disoriented from the propane exposure. Of course we turn it off air out the tent and go to sleep cold. The next morning we immediately informed Sandlin of this and that one lady was so sick she had to leave after one night. She said she’d refund the lady for the BNB she had to get but later didn’t make good on that promise. She said 3 nights in a row she’d send out new propane heaters that didn’t leak and we kept getting the same ones. This forced us to sleep cold without because of fear of dying in our sleep. It is terrifying she has people sleeping in those without any type of detector for the exposure to propane fumes. INSANE.
The barn wasn’t heated so basically unusable it was freezing so we did yoga, ate meals, and hung out outside by the fire most of the time there.
We were finally offered a refund of a whopping $150 of the 4K I spent and when we accepted this via email she began to ghost us and never refunded a dime. After the propane incident 3 women were so terrified they didn’t even stay the other 2 nights and went out of pocket on a nearby bnb ($600 cost to them). THIS PLACE IS THE DEFINITION OF INSTAGRAM VS REALITY DO NOT BE FOOLED! BEWARE! DEATH TRAP TO YOU AND YOUR DOG!
We attended a beautiful wedding at Sombrilla Ranch in July 2018. All of the details made it so memorable. A majestic view of wildlife grazing in the pasture served as a backdrop to the ceremony. Everything was very organized with live music, lovely flowers, immaculate restrooms, and decks with expansive views of the gorgeous mountains. As the bride and groom walked down together, their path was covered with flower petals to the altar. The theme song from 'Lonesome Dove' was playing. The wedding was magical.
As a professional entertainer, I have played at hundreds of weddings across the country. I have never played in a more beautiful setting. The barn is the perfect combination rustic charm and modern function, all surrounded by the unparalleled beauty of Southwest Colorado. The staff and management were professional and committed to making the wedding a wonderful experience for everyone involved.
Two of our dearest friends were married at The Barn at Sombrilla Ranch. I was completely in awe of the setting! The 360* views of the Rocky Mountains, lush green pastures, towering pines and meandering creeks made it feel like a fairytale! The actual barn itself, because of the attention to detail, was just as inspiring with the stunning Aspen staircases and decking, the charming chandeliers, and the elegant decor. The exquisite natural scenery made for beautiful memories and photos. The assistance my friends received from the owner made their wedding much more relaxed than they had expected which was exceedingly impressive. We, along with many of our friends, stayed at VRBO's along the Blanco Basin Road so we were able to hike the National Forest and fly fish during our stay in Pagosa Springs. I must say, this was by far the most memorable and special wedding I've ever been to!
My husband and I were married at the Barn at Sombrilla Ranch and it exceeded our expectations in every way! Not only is the Barn outfitted with every detail a bride could want, it is situated in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The natural beauty of this lush valley surrounded incredible mountains is the perfect backdrop for photography. I enjoyed working with our hosts to find the best vendors in town; they were very responsive and wonderful to work with. This is absolutely the most beautiful wedding venue I have ever seen.
The Barn at Sombrilla Ranch is the most unique and breathtakingly beautiful wedding venue I've visited. The rustic-but-elegant 100-year-old barn, surrounded by national forest mountains, made for perfect indoor/outdoor celebration. During my friend's ceremony, elk were grazing on the green grasslands. The owner helped the wedding party greatly with creative ideas, connections with local vendors, and general responsiveness.
I photographed their first wedding here and I cannot tell you how gorgeous their venue is, you just cannot beat these views of the Rocky Mountains! You won't want to miss out on this rare gem in Pagosa Springs.
