About this vendor
My goal is to tell the complete story of your wedding through documentary, moment-driven photography. I've worked as a newspaper photojournalist at the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press for more than 15 years and have a passion for capturing real moments. Plus I’m a pretty nice guy! I think it's important to have a connection with the person tasked with capturing your big day, let me know if you'd like to have coffee and meet informally. Email or call! One other important thing to know about the way I work--my flat fee includes ownership of all your images, meaning reprints (or websites or anything else) can be made affordable and available to whomever your like. Thanks for listening and good luck planning your big day and finding the right people. It's no small task :)

Ben is the best. Unlike so many other photographers, he'll capture the real story and emotions of the day. He'll do it so silently and professionally you won't even realize he's ...
there. Look at his website and Facebook page and you'll feel like you were actually at the weddings he has samples of. Years after he takes your photos you'll look at them and feel the same way you did on your wedding day - all the small details and real emotions that Ben is so great at capturing add up to retell a story more than words or a video ever could.
We cannot sing Ben Garvin's praises highly enough. His photography is stunning. He is reasonable and easy to work with. He provided our photos within a few weeks, and gave us all t...
he files with no strings attached. Beyond that, he's a great guy and was a pleasure to have around on our wedding day. Highly recommended!
Ben Garvin is the best photographer north of the Mason-Dixon. (probably the best south of it, too!)
I found him because we wanted a photojournalist to capture the day. He came h...
ighly recommended from a friend of a friend. We soon discovered that he was recently AP's photographer of the year for Minnesota. so, yes, this guy is real.
He made our family look like movie stars, captured amazing candid moments and yet, one would not know he was shooting pictures. He is long on candid and natural, and avoids cheesy and posed.
He should really charge much more than he does.
Honestly...with all the photographers out there - it's tough to find the right one! We came across Ben Garvin's name in The Knot magazine...I checked out his website and gave him ...
a jingle. Right off the bat, we liked Ben. Not only did we enjoy his honest and likable personality but his photojournalistic style was exactly what we were looking for. His work is amazing. We would definitely recommend Ben!
I simply can't say enough about how much we loved working with Ben. He is a delightful person and an incredibly talented photographer.
The cost: Ben provides a great value for th...
e cost. The key is that you are paying for his service as a photographer, not for photo finishing. He will edit all of your photos, then give them to you all digitally. That means you can make all of the copies you want, whenever you want. The biggest hidden cost of wedding photography isn't the upfront photography cost, it's the cost to get your photos printed. Most photographers copyright their work and you will pay dearly for those pictures. I am pleased that I can give our parents and siblings framed family photos for Christmas, and I am also planning to create Snapfish album books for our parents. If I didn't own the images, I wouldn't be able to create those gifts.
The service: Ben is like a magician. He seemed to be everywhere. I didn't see him once during the wedding ceremony, but he captured the most wonderful photos! During the reception, we had asked him to be available for a variety of group shots of friends, but other than those interactions, he was just in the background taking pictures of everyone having a wonderful time.
The talent: Ben is a full time photojournalist for the Pioneer Press and other newspapers. Wedding photography is a side business. That means his focus is on the artistry of the photos, not on lining people up for posed pictures. And the outcome is amazing. He does take standard group shots, but we did those in 20-30 minutes tops, with all of our family. We wanted those pictures for our parents, but we wanted the more intimate, unposed ones for us.
We had a wonderful wedding, but it went so quickly! I am grateful to have Ben's images to remind me of the fun of the evening. I would unconditionally recommend Ben!
Ben was a very professional and friendly photographer. It is 6 years later, and we're still thrilled to look through his photographs. He has a great contemporary eye for beautiful c...
ompositions.
You'd be lucky to get him for your wedding.
My husband and I got married in 2004...a while ago at this point! But I still truly LOVE our wedding photos. Besides the fact that Ben is a very nice guy and extremely easy to work...
with, he just knew all the special moments to catch and caught a lot of intimate up close shots. I love his more photo journalist style. All our family and friends raved about the results. He is the best!
Ben is a master of documenting every wonderful detail of a couple's wedding -- especially moments of togetherness, laughter, and joy. That's how I remember my wedding, and Ben's ph...
otos remind me just how much fun I had that day. He has a knack for shooting events as they unfold because that's what he does every day as a professional news photographer.
My husband and I knew we didn't want to spend hours on our wedding day posing for photos; those pictures generally seem staged and lifeless. Having said that, Ben took some of the most creative group wedding shots that I have ever seen. His idea to have our entire wedding party jump up in the air in front of the Weisman Art Museum produced images that still make us grin ear to ear.
Ben is also a genuinely nice guy and doesn't mind fading into the background on your big day. But once you get your photos back, you'll see why he is a rock star at his craft.
And the fact that he hands over all the digital images, unlike some photographers who charge for prints, made him a bargain in our eyes.
Finally, it's important to note that Ben is highly skilled. He has been named Minnesota Photographer of the Year, has won numerous awards, and regularly shoots for the New York Times. It was an honor to have him document our wedding.
Although it's been four years since Ben photographed our wedding, we continue to enjoy and appreciate his talented work each time we look at our wedding photos (which is daily as s...
ome have been framed and are displayed in our home). Ben captured so many important moments of our day and really tapped into the emotion of it all. I remember being surprised when we first got our photos from Ben as I didn't even remember him taking certain photos. We could not have been happier with his work and were so fortunate to have him as our photographer.
It's clear from Ben's resume and portfolio that he's super talented. But when you hire him, you get more than talent. Ben is a true journalist. He is unobtrusive (I refer to him...
as a sniper because he seemed to get photos at our wedding when we had no idea he was present), which tends to make things more natural and less contrived, and skilled at recognizing and capturing those nuances and moments and details that define an evening. I tell people that I didn't know what my wedding was like until I saw Ben's pictures.
My wife and I were looking for a journalistic approach. We did the obligatory posed shots (Ben worked quickly and efficiently so we could get all the combos of people we wanted without spending all day posing, and everyone loved working with him as he's a fun guy), but the photos we cherish most are when Ben caught us and our loved ones in attitudes most indicative of our and their personalities. He has an eye for that.
Basically, his photos look like they belong more in Time than in a frame for sale at Target, meaning instead of awkward posing and cheese faces, they are active and natural and accurate to the true feeling of that moment. If you want an intelligent approach to the recordation of your wedding and are reluctant to hire someone because you don't want the typical Hallmark-ish wedding photographer faire, I strongly suggest you hire Ben. He's a journalist that does weddings as opposed to a wedding photographer. That being said, he listens very closely to what you want and makes it happen.
My wife and I agree that hiring Ben was the best money we spent for our wedding. I've come to think of that expense not just as paying for our wedding photographer but as also buying gifts for all our family and friends, who have striking photos of themselves and their family that Ben took at our wedding hanging on their walls to enjoy forever.
