About this vendor
Calaveras County's Premiere Wedding & Event Venue. We offer both indoor and outdoor venue spaces for your event, tailored to the seasons and your requirements. You will have exclusive use of numerous areas of our venue, including our lower meadow (Oak trees, sweet peas, and a foot bridge), the rose garden, the string-lit back patio (plenty of room for dancing), and the Gathering Room (with a large river-rock fire place). Whether you are planning a lavish celebration of 150 or an intimate gathering for 30, The Black Bear Inn is ideally suited for your wedding celebration. For outdoor events, ceremonies are typically held in the lower meadow, followed by cocktail hour in the rose garden, and finally the guests are escorted to the backyard/back patio for the reception.

Black Bear Inn was the perfect location for our wedding. We had a very intimate wedding of 30 people, and it was the perfect size. The grounds were covered in beautiful sweet pea ...
wildflowers, roses, and trees for our July wedding. We stayed at the Inn all weekend, which allowed us to have our small rehearsal dinner there, as well as clean up on Sunday. Throughout the planning process, Wendi was there to answer any questions AND she was also there the day of to help in any way she could. Chef Bruce made us an incredible French Toast breakfast the morning of our wedding. We were on Cloud 9 after it was over. We can't wait to return for our anniversary.
Wendi and Bruce are the best! I cannot even begin to speak their praises. I visited BBI unexpectedly in winter and the grounds looked absolutely beautiful then, even without everyt...
hing being in full bloom. Our June wedding was absolutely perfect and I could not have imagined a more gorgeous and intimate venue. Wendi was so helpful and involved every step of the way and all the vendors she recommended were a pleasure to work with. I do not locally and picked out most vendors based on a phone call or email, so to have her vote of confidence really made me feel at ease. It was a wonderful experience working with Black Bear Inn and I cannot wait until I get to go back and visit!
I got married a year ago here, but never wrote a review- better late than never! This is an amazing all-in-one venue. Wendi and Bruce are just two of the greatest human beings on t...
he planet. They have great vendor recommendations and are well connected in the community. They've done all kinds of weddings here, from floral to super hero themed. I would recommend this venue for a crazy late night wedding, but it's such a good place for a beautiful classy outdoor forest wedding. I had to plan my wedding from across the country and they were so great about helping out. We had to book before we were able to visit the property- thank goodness we found Wendi & Bruce. It was amazing. I got married in June, so everything was green and blooming. It was really hot, but there was a nice breeze through the entire property (there usually is). there's no other property like this in the area for the price, the grounds are beautiful, and the inn is just the picture perfect place to get ready the morning of the wedding. I can't recommend enough!
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Wendi, Bruce, or their beautiful inn. It was truly the wedding of our dreams. They were professional, knowledgeable, and just truly wonde...
rful people to be around in the days leading up to our wedding! I would not have changed a single thing, and booking our wedding there was our first decision and easily our best.
perfect setting for our intimate wedding. The inn is beautifully decorated with the most comfortable beds! Seriously I'd recommend this place just for the beds. It's a really nice ...
private venue.
Wendi was amazing and super helpful!
My October wedding was truly amazing! Family and friends constantly commented (and still do) on how gorgeous my wedding venue was and how nice the overall celebration was.
Pros:
...
- gorgeous location, just a few miles away from Big Trees State Park on the east side of the Sierra foothills.
- because it is so beautiful, we needed very little decorations. too much would have taken away from the atmosphere.
- because it was fall (October) the weather was perfect - 75 in the day time and about 50 at night and the leaves in the ceremony space were gorgeous fall colors.
- we used the front yard space for the ceremony and backyard for dinner and dancing. we also had the inside of the inn we used as a lounge with hot cider and coffee if guests got chilly. the inside could have also held both our ceremony and reception if needed.
- Wendi, one of the owners, was very helpful and answered my million questions about details and provided a list of other vendors to help me get started.
-my family comes from out of town so the 5 bedrooms at the inn were helpful since they didn't have to worry about accommodations.
Cons:
- the rooms are very expensive. this is a luxury B&B and the rooms are $250/night. if you book here, you must also book all the rooms for 2 nights. We felt it rude to have to expect those who stayed to pay $500 just to stay for our wedding so we did not ask. That said, we had one extra room to fill and the several people it was offered to refused it. Even after being told they would not have to pay for the room they did not feel comfortable staying in such a pricey room so it went unoccupied for both nights.
- also, we were not provided breakfast either day. The day of the wedding I was told I had to pay for it if they made it. I forgot to ask about the day after. My mom said they were making breakfast for themselves but my family went to the diner nearby. I thought breakfast was part of a B&B and I can't find in the contract where it’s not provided.
-we had to rent tables, chairs, linens, etc. it would have been nice if some of these were provided. I was told that the caterer often takes care of rentals, but it worked out to be easier (and cheaper) to rent the items ourselves.
- a month before the wedding we were told we had to provide cake tables, bar tables, etc. Of all the tables the inn already had, they only let us use 3 small tables for welcoming guests, and coffee, etc. and wanted to charge to rent any others. the way it was presented felt like nickel and diming, especially for what we paid to rent the place, I thought that meant the whole place.
- my husband and I left after the reception for honeymoon, so my parents walked through the place the morning after with the owners to make sure there were no damages. They were told all was fine. In the card returning my security deposit, the owners mentioned there were minor damages. Weird they would tell my parents all was fine, then say there were damages. At least I got my full deposit back.
Honestly, I loved having my wedding at the inn, but for us (on a budget) it was a bit of a stretch and hassle to fill the rooms. I know it wouldn't be the same experience, but I wish we didn't have to rent the rooms. If I had to do it again, I'm slightly conflicted, but I'd probably end up picking this place again, all considered. It was a great day!
