Overall incredible experience, the food was amazing, the service was amazing, and the venue was perfect for our wedding of about 140 people. Stephanie is super nice and does day of...
coordinating, and she is super helpful in managing her own staff. We had our own officiant who coordinated most of the ceremony, which we held on the venue’s back patio. We would definitely recommend having your wedding here, everything came under 50k, and people must have assumed we spent double that, we had a raw bar with crabs, oysters, and shrimp, all you can drink, and the venue pays for a band or dj. It was an incredible experience in an incredible location.
Every family planning a milestone event assumes that if a venue knows about a serious problem that could affect their day, they will be told in time to make a different decision. T...
hat assumption is why I'm writing this review.
We hosted our 9-month old baby daughter's dedication brunch at Blackwall Hitch Alexandria on July 19. What troubles me most is not that the private room was uncomfortably hot. Air-conditioning systems can fail. What troubles me is that we did everything a reasonable, diligent client could do to protect our day, and it still wasn't enough.
We toured the room five weeks before the event. It was hot. Event coordinator Stephanie assured us repairs were underway and the problem was unusual. We booked our private event on those assurances.
As the date approached, we kept checking in because we had older relatives and heat-sensitive guests. While we were still being reassured, multiple OpenTable reviews posted July 3 to July 5 described "80+ degree heat," said "the air was out," and complained of extreme discomfort. On July 7, Blackwall Hitch publicly responded that those concerns had been shared with its "leadership team for review."
Our event was only 12 days later.
Two days before the brunch, I emailed Stephanie again. She acknowledged in writing that the room was still warm and that they were "looking into" purchasing a window unit. She promised, twice in writing, that someone would confirm the room was properly cooling before we arrived.
That confirmation never came.
The night before the event, I went to the restaurant myself. The room was still hot. Stephanie and the General Manager assured me it would be fine by morning.
It wasn't.
During the brunch, the Captain's Quarters stayed uncomfortably warm despite a wall unit, a portable floor unit, and eventually four additional fans. Guests, including elderly family members, repeatedly had to leave the room and stand in the hallway to cool off. Appetizers were about an hour late. Drink service was about an hour late. The lights took roughly 30 minutes to turn on. And Stephanie, the coordinator the venue directs private event inquiries to, never checked on us during the event. She only appeared at closeout.
I declined to sign the final receipt because the experience we received was not the experience we contracted and paid for. Blackwall Hitch charged my card in full anyway.
The hardest part to accept is that none of this was unavoidable. If the venue had simply said, "We cannot reliably cool this room right now," we would have moved the event, chosen another space, or found a different venue. Instead, we lost the chance to protect one of the most meaningful days in our daughter's life because we trusted their repeated assurances.
That is what future couples and families should consider. Every venue will eventually have something go wrong. The real test is whether they are transparent early enough for you to safeguard an irreplaceable day. I did request a partial refund. They reviewed it and declined any refund. They did not address the written assurances I was given before the event. If you are considering Blackwall Hitch for a wedding, rehearsal dinner, shower, dedication, or any once-in-a-lifetime celebration, ask yourself one question before you sign the contract:
If this venue knew about a problem that could materially affect your event, do you trust they would tell you in time to make a different decision?
Based on our experience, I would not.
We had our wedding reception at Blackwall Hitch, including a cocktail hour and dinner for about 60 people, and had a great experience. We were able to select a package with several...
options for our guests, and we appreciated that guests were able to order at the reception so we didn’t have to track meal selections. Everything was smooth and efficient, and the food was great. The event manager, Stephanie, was super responsive and accommodating. The location is great and we were able to slip out for photos by the water before our first dance. Definitely recommend.
This was the perfect location for our rehearsal dinner reception the night before our wedding at the Torpedo Factory. We very much enjoyed working with Selma. She helped us find ...
a wheelchair/handicap accessible space in the restaurant (which is very hard to find in Old Town) that could still accommodate all of our guests comfortably. Her team (Omar, Brianna, and Antonio) executed our heavy hors d'oeuvres/open bar concept perfectly. We would highly recommend Blackwall Hitch!
