About Us
Bredenbeck’s Bakery & Ice Cream Parlor has been serving sweet confections and ice cream treats to customers in Philadelphia and beyond since 1889. Bredenbeck’s is a full line scratch bakery specializing in unique custom design cakes, your favorite classic pastries, and many more sweet treats!
A Sweet Century
The original Bredenbeck’s was opened in Philadelphia’s Northern Liberties neighborhood by Frederick Robert Bredenbeck, an immigrant baker from Bavaria, in 1889. The bakery was an instant success and expanded to include stores in Mayfair, Germantown and Mt. Airy. In 1954, the Bredenbeck family handed the business over to Walter and Otto Haug, two longtime employees.
Thirty years later, in 1983, Walter Haug’s daughter, Karen Boyd-Rohde, opened Bredenbeck’s current location in Chestnut Hill. Since its opening, Boyd-Rohde has established Bredenbeck’s as one of the most well-known and well-respected bakeries in the Philadelphia greater area.
A Family Tradition
A self-taught baker and motivated entrepreneur, Boyd-Rohde has instilled a deep respect for the tradition of scratch baking while simultaneously expanding Bredenbeck's reach and customer base. Boyd-Rohde opened the Ice Cream Parlor in 1983 ever expanding Bredenbeck's sweet selection.
The tradition is continued through Karen's sons Jacob and Irvin Boyd as co-owners and fourth generation. Irvin studied culinary arts, while Jacob studied business management. Together they make the perfect team to continue to make the Philadelphia area's sweet dreams come true!
Viewers nationwide have tuned in to watch Bredenbeck's talented team on TLC, Food Network, Rachel Ray, and Fox 29. Bredenbeck's has created cakes for Sesame Place, the Phillies, Tastykake, Elton John, Bon Jovi and many more!

Working with Bredenbeck's to design our wedding cake was such a simple process. The cake looked exactly how we had hoped and tasted absolutely delicious. Several of our friends and family mentioned how good it was, and wished they could have had seconds.
We couldn't be happier with our wedding cake from Bredenbeck's! It was so beautiful, and it tasted amazing. We -and our guests - loved that we were able to do two flavors. We ended up with only two slices left over at the end of the night! It just flew off the desert table, people loved it. We worked with Dana, and she was lovely and professional during the entire process. She showed us reference photos that were exactly what we wanted, and ended up being exactly what we got. So great!
We had a wonderful experience with Bredenbeck's for our wedding cake this past August! The bakery had come highly recommended from all my local friends, and they didn't disappoint. We asked for a design of abstract flowers to match the wildflower feel of our wedding and they nailed it! We liked many of the flavors but ended up choosing 2 lemon/raspberry combinations for our tiers, and they tasted delicious! We also loved everything we tried from the bakery itself and would not hesitate to visit again or recommend to our friends!

Bredenbeck's was tied into our venue's contract, but we could not have been happier with our cake! We also had cookies from the bakery for our guests, and everyone raved about how delicious everything was. Bredenbeck's made the cake tasting process easy and fun! On the day of our tasting, they provided a ton of guidance and inspiration photos that helped us in our decision making process. Their cakes and baked goods are delicious and we've visited the bakery again after our wedding. We are looking forward to receiving our anniversary cake!
Bredenbeck’s was so easy to work with! From the tasting to the order the whole process was seamless. They followed our vision for the cake and it was exactly what we wanted on the day of the wedding! And it tasted fantastic.
I have attended many weddings and eaten many cakes, but I can honestly say Bredenbeck's is BY FAR the best wedding cake I've ever had! My only regret is my husband and I only got to eat small pieces of the cake during the cake cutting and wish we could have kept the entire thing for ourselves! We are so happy Bredenbeck's was our cake vendor for our wedding and couldn't recommend them enough!
Bredenbecks cakes are always delicious, but they went above and beyond for our wedding day!! To start off, my husband and I were invited to a tasting at their bakery a couple months before our wedding. The tasting was so detailed, organized, and so yummy. Nancy helped us pick the perfect customized design for our cake. On the wedding day, everything was handled for us, and we didn't have to worry about a thing! Bredenbecks worked with our venue to set up the cake, have it displayed, and ready to go for the big day. The cake was absolutely delicious, and the design was exactly what we had asked for. We received so many compliments from guests about the look and taste of the cake. Thank you Bredenbecks for such a wonderful experience!!
Bredenbeck’s was included with my venue package, but I’m so glad they were! I had a specific vision for my cake, but once we went to the tasting and looked through their previous work, I changed my design. Dana helped us talk through our options and surprisingly my husband had a strong opinion on the design and Dana was super helpful on helping us create something unique and beautiful that fit my vision for the overall vibe of the wedding. Their cakes are all pound cakes which made me nervous because I thought it would be too heavy, but I was delighted when I tasted our cake, it was light and not too sweet. It was perfect. We went with an all-vanilla tier and chocolate chip tier with salted caramel filling. I also love that they make you a fresh cake for your 1-year anniversary so you don’t have to keep the top tier in the freezer for a year.
Cut to the chase, the cake was absolutely delicious! As a first time bride, I wasn't sure what to expect, and likely overthought every detail, from the color, design, icing, filling or no filling, cake topper, to the color of the serving tray, etc., but in the end, and through 2 consultations (thank you Bredenbecks' for your patience and for listening), my now husband and I were made a lovely-looking, elegant, and deliciously baked wedding cake! I would highly recommend Bredenbeck's Bakery, for their expertise in creating beautiful and delicious wedding cakes and for setting the process in motion for us a first-time couple and making it easy and non-stressful!

We enjoyed working with Bredenbeck's for our wedding cake. The tasting and planning went smoothly and the cake looked beautiful. The only thing I will say is that the cake flavors and fillings we picked out tasted pretty mild and vanilla, so I just wish you could taste the additions more. They use pound cake for their wedding cakes which is always delicious no matter the flavor :)

We got married at the warrington April 2024 and used bredenbeck’s for the cake. We got half pound cake and funfetti cake. It was so good. The decoration was so good! They were so easy to work with and worked so hard to make sure the colors on my cake matched my color scheme! 10/10 recommend. Got so many compliments on the cake !

We got our wedding cake from Bredenbeck's Bakery. It was DELICIOUS! All of guests kept saying how much they loved the cake. We ended up getting 2 flavors - vanilla pound cake with raspberry filling and chocolate chip pound cake with chocolate filling. We met with Jake for our consultation and we were able to try all of the pound cake flavors and fillings before he drew a design of our wedding cake with the features and colors we wanted. Can’t wait to get our 1 year wedding anniversary cake so we can enjoy our cake all over again!
Bredenbeck's did our wedding cake and I can't recommend them enough. Dana was amazing and helped us through our cake tasting and gave great recommendations. Everything we tried was delicious. The raspberry swirl cake with lemon/raspberry buttercream was a huge hit with our guests. She also helped us when we wanted to order additional cakes for our wedding rehearsal. Everything turned out even better than the inspo pictures I sent in. Will definitely be ordering from Bredenbeck's in the future.

We were able to select 3 different flavors for the interior part of the cake and everyone raved about how good it was. They also provide a top tier on your on year anniversary. Our venue explicitly worked with Bredenbeck's so a cake from their bakery was included in the cost of our day, but even if it didn't I would STILL choose Bredenbeck's. The hardest part about working with this vendor is choosing which cake flavors you want! When my fiance and I went to our consultation we loved all of the flavors and had a hard time choosing just two. I didn't know a lot about cake designs, but tried to describe my vision to Bredenbeck's anyway and they totally got it! They were very easy to work with and we got so many compliments on our cake. It was absolutely stunning and not to mention delicious!

As the contracted bakery for our venue, the planning process with Bredenbeck's was a breeze. My cake combination was delicious (2 styles: chocolate chip cake with raspberry jam and raspberry swirl cake with chocolate frosting) and I love the idea that they will make you a fresh top tier on your 1 year anniversary so that you don't have to save it and eat up freezer space and taste any freezer burn. However, I was informed day of my wedding that my cake arrived extremely late. Luckily my venue had it under control, but it was also not the color I ordered. It luckily still blended in well enough with my theme that it did not seem out of place, but I was not aware until I went to cut into it and there is nothing to do at that point.
Our wedding cake was one of the most important components of our menu and our custom cake from Bredenbeck’s did not disappoint. From our initial planning/tasting to day-of, Bredenbeck’s attention to detail and quality service truly were the icing on the cake. Also, how sweet is it that Bredenbeck’s goes above and beyond, even after your event is over, by offering a complimentary FRESH 1 year anniversary top-tier cake to continue the celebration?!

So delicious! The final product was absolutely amazing and we had people tell us they don't normally eat wedding cake but this one was worth having. We did a wonderful tasting with Bredenbeck's and settled on a combo chocolate/raspberry and vanilla/raspberry 4 tier cake. We went back and forth with Dana to come up with the perfect design and were thrilled with how it turned out! They were always very responsive and great to work with!

My family has been getting cakes from Bredenbeck's for years but this time, they have outdone themselves. This was my the first time ordering a wedding tier cake from Bredenbeck's.
They were patient and understood exactly what I wanted my dream cake to look like.
There were many cake and filling options to choose from and taste. There were also many sample cakes in their show room for inspiration. Their team sent over my sample cake in a timely matter and the cake delivery was so smooth. I could go on and on!
I was able to get a tier cake and a sheet cake that would stay in the back for serving to accommodate my budget.
They also provide a fresh small cake with your wedding flavors on your first anniversary so you can use all of your cake at your wedding!
The final product was better than I could have ever dreamed of!
I used Bredenbeck's because their wedding cake was included in my catering package through my wedding venue, and I was so happy with how it turned out. Not only did my cake turn out exactly as I had requested, we also had such a fun time visiting their bakery for our tasting. The staff was very helpful, and they were always prompt with answering my questions. I would use them again in a heartbeat!

Bredenbeck’s did such a fantastic job on our wedding cake! We were so happy with how it turned out. The tasting really helped because we went in with something in mind, but the cake flavors and combinations were so good we were even surprised with what we ended up choosing (we got lemon with raspberry puree and then chocolate chip with espresso icing). My only regret is not asking someone to save us a slice from multiple tiers so we could try all of the flavor combinations! They also offer a complimentary one-year anniversary cake so you don’t have to save the top tier. Highly recommend.
Bredenbeck’s Bakery did a phenomenal job creating my dream wedding cake. I went in with a few inspiration photos and they absolutely knocked it out of the part not to mention my guests LOVED the flavors. We had a 3 layer cake and did 3 different flavors and fillings for each layer. The amount of compliments we received about how delicious it was especially from “non-cake” people was incredible. They really took our vision went above and beyond. And my favorite part, they make a complimentary top tier for your one year anniversary so you dont have to take up space in your freezer and eat a year old cake. I will be shouting from the rooftops for all my unmarried friends and family to use them for their future weddings.
We celebrated our marriage last weekend and Bredenbeck's made our wedding cake and the pastries and confections for our dessert table. We could not have been happier with the cake and other sweet treats; they were delicious! Bredenbeck’s offered an excellent and varied selection so everyone could have something they enjoyed!
During our wedding cake tasting, we worked with Kate and Dana who were extremely knowledgeable and helped us pick the correct size cake for our event and had great suggestions for flavor pairings and decorations!
The other great perk of using Bredenbeck’s is that they make you a little wedding cake for your first anniversary so you do not have to eat a year old frozen cake!

They answered our countless emails with questions and helped us to design the wedding cake that we wanted. We could not recommend them more highly! Our wedding cake from Bredenbeck’s was delicious and beautiful. It was hard to narrow down flavors after our tasting, and with their help we were able to design our wedding cake to have the layers and look we wanted. We’re looking forward to picking up some of the same cake for our wedding anniversary in 2024.
Bredenbeck's was responsive, professional, and their cake was DELICIOUS! We had so much fun during the cake tasting, and were delighted to hear Bredenbeck's provides a complimentary cake for our first year wedding anniversary! For our tiers, we chose vanilla with buttercream filling, lemon with champagne strawberry filling, chocolate with espresso filling, and vanilla with salted caramel filling....they were all amazing! My only regret from my wedding day is that I didn't ask someone to save me a slice from each tier in advance! Can't recommend them enough for couples in the Philly area looking for an awesome wedding day cake!

Every time we come here, we are never disappointed! Their baked good are WONDERFUL!!! But this time we came for our Wedding Cake this September 2023...all our guests just LOVED it and asked where we got it!! If you want great cake...definitely come to Bredenbeck's!!!
My husband LOVED our cake. We had 3 tiers with lemon, vanilla butter pins, and raspberry swirl. So good. And it was absolutely beautiful! I’m very thankful that it was included with our wedding venue (Renaissance Philadelphia Downtown Hotel). We also get a complimentary 4in cake for our anniversary which is so sweet! I highly recommend.

Everything from our tasting to taste of cake was exceptional. Colors were exactly what we wanted and types of flowers and design. Would have liked a few more flowers on the cake but overall if was still outstanding, beautiful, and delicious. Definitely recommend.
Bredenbeck's did a nice job with the cake and they also have gluten free cake (which was a bonus for me, as I'm gluten intolerant, so I didn't have to arrange getting a small gf cake from another bakery). The cakes tasted great but I was a bit disappointed with the decoration. The top and bottom tiers of the cake were supposed to be a lavender color (I left an envelope for them to match the color) and the middle tier was supposed to be white. The tiers were a different color however the purple was such a light purple you could barely tell the difference between the colors of the tiers. A cake from Bredenbeck's was included with our venue, but we had to pay extra to have a filling in the cake and for some of the decoration choices we made.
We loved our Bredenbeck's wedding cake! During our consultation, Grace was so sweet and instantly excited about our paint theme/idea. Received so many compliments about the lemon/buttercream cake -- one of our guests even ordered a birthday cake with the same flavor right after!

At our private cake tasting, we sampled a number of delicious cake and icing flavors and had the chance to review many different wedding cake styles. We customized our cake with the designs and colors that matched our wedding colors and feel. We loved getting to select two flavor combos for our 4-tiered cake. It was delicious and beautiful!
Bredenbeck's made our cake for our wedding. We met with Grace for our tasting and details meeting. Grace was an awesome sales consultant who showed us great ideas for decorations and cake/filling options. The selection of cakes and fillings were great and very different then just the standard chocolate and vanilla. We chose the chocolate chip pound with vanilla and the pink champagne with lemon. Grace walked us through the right amount for our guests and the whole process. We would definitely recommend Bredenbeck's to anyone and are already looking forward to our anniversary tier next year!

Our cake was amazing and everything we imagined it would be.
We ordered a small raspberry three-tier cake with vanilla filling for our wedding that turned our beautiful! We sent them a picture of the design style we wanted and the final product was beyond our expectations. We also ordered a large vanilla sheet cake with cookies and cream filling. Both cakes were delicious and we cannot recommend Bredenbecks Bakery enough! Our guests continue to ask where our cake came from! We are very excited for our free cake on our one year anniversary.
We were so excited that our venue partnered with Brednbeck's for the wedding cake. We worked with them and opted for a small cake to cut and two different types of cupcakes. Everyone was raving about how great the cupcakes were and we completely agree! Our cutting cake was absolutely delicious and even included paw prints for our dogs. The team is awesome and we are so happy to have them be a part of our day!
Honestly, this was the best tasting wedding cake I have ever had and it was BEAUTIFUL!!! When my husband and I went for our meeting we weren't exactly sure what we wanted or how to go about explaining what we wanted...however, the team at Bredenbeck's Bakery NAILED IT!!! We talked it out with one of the team members and she drew up a sketch that was EXACTLY what I was envisioning for our big day!! On the big day, it was EXACTLY like the picture and there was only a half of cake left for us to take home!! Everyone ate it at the wedding and then were bringing pieces of our funfettii home with them!! I will 100% be using Bredenbeck's for future events!!!!
Bredenbecks brought our dream wedding cake to life! The tasting was so much fun with so many different options and the staff was very attentive/thorough in helping us design our cake. They absolutely nailed our vision. Not only did the cake end up being absolutely beautiful, but it was one of the best tasting cakes we have ever had! Not kidding, my husband and I went in for seconds immediately after finishing our first piece. Our guests kept telling us how much they enjoyed the cake which must’ve been true because we didn’t have a single piece left over! We are already so excited for the complimentary cake topper they provide for our anniversary next year. If you’re still deciding on which bakery to chose for your wedding, just know that Bredenbecks have some amazing staff that truly care about your special day & will exceed your expectations :)
We are SO glad we decided to go with Bredenbecks bakery for our wedding cake! We had such a fun tasting experience with Jake, who was super helpful with recommendations and accommodating our wishes; Dana who (patiently) helped us finalize the details; and the wedding cakes for our events were exactly what we envisioned!! Aside from my cake from Bredenbeck's Bakery being beautiful, it tasted amazing too. I always find wedding pound cakes dry and unappealing, but this one was shockingly delicious. My guests also complimented the look and taste of it. We also ordered extra cookies and macarons from Bredenbecks, which everyone loved. Finally, we ordered my mother in law a chocolate birthday cake for brunch the next morning, since that was her actual birthday. She claims it was the best chocolate cake she ever had. And it was one of the best decorated cakes I ever saw. Definitely worth the money!
Cake was delicious and everyone enjoyed it! We were hoping for a bit more decoration on the cake.

Amazing bakery, professional and delicious wedding cake
I was so excited when I found out that Bredenbeck's would be the bakers wedding cake. The majority of the cost of the cake was included with the venue we booked. The staff are all so professional and friendly. Our trading was handled beautifully by Dana. She understood exactly what I wanted and made sure that my vision came to fruition. My wedding day was magical and everyone absolutely loved our cake. We'd heard from several people that we would have tons of cake leftover. Not when you get a cake as delicious as we had. If the venue had not wrapped the top tier husband and I, we would not have had any of our own wedding cake. Not one piece was left. I highly recommend Bredenbeck's for any of your sweet treats, especially your wedding cake.
Bredenbeck's made us the most delicious and beautiful wedding cake of our dreams!! We chose the lemon pound cake with raspberry puree and it was absolutely amazing. All of our guests loved it!! They were so easy to work with and we really enjoyed our experience with them!
