edding cake is one of the center pieces of any wedding & our experience with Cakabakery caused our wedding planner & party an undue amount of stress on the wedding day.
Our early interactions with Cakabakery were fine – we found the flavors we liked and settled on dates. Cakabakery has several positive reviews, but they also have a number of negative reviews which we wished we had paid more attention to as they were reflective of our experience.
There were numerous things that went wrong on our wedding day: (1) Timing/tardiness – we were told the cake would arrive anytime after 8am; our ceremony was at 4.30pm & the cake arrived at 2pm. While this may be okay, if Cakabakery requires a 6-hour delivery window, they ought to mention it as our wedding planner/party were scrambling to contact Jason & his staff. (2) Ability to be contacted – as time was running short before the ceremony, members of our wedding party/wedding planners were frantically trying to contact Jason or his staff via phone, email and FB messenger. We were not able to get in touch with anyone till mid-afternoon. Several friends went to Meijer and were rush ordering a new wedding cake. We were not told of the debacle and we received an account from several people the next day. When we debriefed with Jason a few days after, as we believe there are two sides to every story, he told us they are not open on Sundays and because it was a holiday weekend, they were not easy to reach. We were surprised this was an excuse. (3) Professionalism – the staff who turned up late to deliver was rude and unapologetic. Jason's reason was the staff was not a “people person”. If that's the case, have someone else deliver the cake. Jason seems nice enough, but he was tone-deaf for a business owner and not surprised at what happened. When one of our family members talked to Jason, he was not apologetic, but rather cavalier about having great reviews from others. (4) Taste/Quality – Jason prides himself on having the best caliber cakes & decorators in Michigan. While the cake tasted ok, the decorations were amateur and missed the ball from photo examples provided. It also looked like 90% of the cake was left undecorated and the sheet cake was nearly frozen in parts. We have lived in cities across the country and around the world and we appreciate high quality craftsmanship, but our cake was not so. We have had cheap, basic cake from stores such as CostCo which have been much higher quality than Cakabakery's.
From the service & quality, Cakabakery might be ok for a weekend drive-by for cupcakes or birthday cakes. Unfortunately, they were not up to the task for our wedding cake. It may be conceivable that they had an off-day for our wedding, but their lack of understanding, empathy and professionalism reeks of a mediocre bakery. We're hoping this review will be constructive for Jason and his staff as they work with future couples.
Unfortunately for Cakabakery, many who attended our wedding are in the catering & wedding planning business in the GR & Western MI area. There was immense disappointment in the quality & professional attitude of Cakabakery & hence, it will be unlikely that Jason nor Cakabakery will be recommended for future events involving us.

my very tight weekend schedule ( I only was up in Grand Rapids area once prior to the wedding) to schedule a tasting. Once we arrived for the tasting, we were welcomed warmly and everything was set up and ready for us. The staff walked us through all the decisions and gave great recommendations and feedback.
We ended up ordering a gorgeous two-tier fondant cake painted with gold accent. the first layer was coconut cake with coconut creme filling and the second layer was the salted caramel cake (which we tried during our tasting). INCREDIBLE and SOO delicious! Because our cake was so affordable I ended up surprising my husband with a personalized Detroit Lions grooms cake. It was so beautiful and the attention to detail was spot on. We ended up digging into the grooms cake (chocolate and peanut butter amazingness) after we left the reception. When we got to the venue that evening the cake had the "ribbon" on it but you could easily see the gaps and some cracking. When I spoke to our wedding coordinator, Katarina, at the City Flats Ballroom, I inquired about the small cake box which we specifically requested from Cakabakery for the bride and groom's two pieces of cake. It was to be put on the seat of their horse and carriage at the end of the evening. She said they left no box and they literally snuck in and out without checking in with her which was very unusual. Our venue boxed up the leftover cake and we had it the next day with family members while the bride and groom opened gifts. In the group of 8 people who had a piece two of them got a bite of something very bitter. The bride was one of them and said it tasted like she bit into an ibuprofen pill. Her mother in law also got a bad piece and she said she thought it was either baking soda or baking powder that was not mixed in properly. I am thoroughly disappointed because I don't know how many guest also got pieces which tasted bad. All of these negative elements add up to a poor experience. I would not recommend cakabakery for a wedding cake.

wn to do it. She was very apologetic and delivered cupcakes for us later that day, but still left us feeling like we missed out on the cake tasting experience.
Next, when calling to pay for the cake, the staff on the phone had difficulty locating our correct contract and could only find an old version of our contract. They had to call back several hours later with the correct information.
And finally, our cakes for our wedding day were not what we ordered. We had ordered one small cake for cutting and the frosting was the wrong flavor and color. We also ordered two sheet cakes of specified flavors that were completely incorrect upon delivery. This was very disappointing considering we had called the week prior to confirm the order. It was as if the orders we placed were not even reviewed upon making the cakes.
When we let Cakabakery know of the error, all Jason had to say was that he was "sorry that we were not happy with our order." There was no admission of fault or a genuine apology. He did offer us an anniversary cake, but being that we live out of town, this is not really a realistic offering.
When planning a wedding, there is enough to worry about without feeling like you need to constantly follow up with a vendor in order to confirm appointments and orders, therefore I would not recommend this bakery.
I love this cake, and so did all our guests. They devoured it. You should not consider any other bakery. We had a lemon cake with blueberry buttercream as well as chocolate cake with fudge buttercream. THE BEST.

If you are trying to contact for the 1st time, I do recommend a direct email, phone call, or even stopping into the shop. Seems to be the occasional technical glitch on the website and you do not want to miss out on having this cake and eating it too.

They made the cutting cake look exactly like the inspiration photo I showed them. The cake we got was white with some brown/bronze leaves on it. m the workers here. I went in with my husband (fiance at the time) to do a taste test and get a quote for our cake (and cakepops and cupcakes) and after the meeting we didn't ever recieve a quote. I emailed and called a few times and finally 4 weeks later I got my price. But I can forgive a business for being busy and I had given myself plenty of time so a couple of weeks wasn't going to kill me and I really loved their cakes! After I recieved the quote I told the owner I wanted to put the deposit down and reserve my cake. He told me I needed to send a check, which I did maybe 2 days later. A month before my wedding the owner emailed me and asked if I was still insterested in getting my cake from them, I reponded politely, yes I already sent in the deposit, a check which you guys already cashed. He responded with a 'lol looks like I'm more orginized than I though' I was starting to get a little worried. About a week before my wedding I called to ask when my final payment was due and the women on the phone was rather rude and told me I had one more day before my order would be dropped. I will admit it was probably my fault for not listen in the begining because I'm sure they told me when final payment was due but I'm pretty sure they weren't even planning on calling me to make sure I didn't forget about it before they cancelled my order. But alas, I made it in time and paid the remaining amount via credit card over the phone. Finally the big day was here and everything was going perfect, when the cake arrived I didn't even see the people come and set the cake up. They didn't talk to anyone to say your cake is here or to let anyone know what things needed to be returned, etc (we had started pictures already but I had lots of helpers hanging around). But that didn't really matter, except the only decorations I wanted on my cake were one ribbon around each tier with the top tier having a little flower shaped bow and guess what? They didn't do that it was a plain white cake... Like I said it was a delicious cake and everyone there thought it looked great but I was very dissapointed with how I was treated throughout the whole process of ordering and I gave them the easiest cake in the world to make and they couldn't even do it right. I am a little younger than their average bride (if I had to guess) and I think they didn't really take me seriously. I was pretty dissapointed with them but a good cake is a good cake so if you are willing to deal with some not so perfect customer service and you don't mind if your cake doesn't look like what you asked for you will not be dissapointed in the taste!
I asked Cakabakery to make cupcake favors for my wedding (the strawberry champagne--wow! It kills me that I cannot have one more often.) and they did a beautiful job. They made everything so easy and lovely--we were thrilled.

My advice is to go in person to the Cakabakery and try to talk to Jason in person about setting up a cake tasting time since he could be slow to respond via phone/email (b/c he's been bombarded with so many requests)... Plus since you're there in person, you can buy a few of his cupcakes and try out a few flavors outside of the tasting!
