My husband and I booked a tiny ceremony at the Chapel a few short months before our wedding. We spoke with Brian to arrange in advance a plan for the day of. Brian emailed us information including rules and limitations of the venue contract. We followed up with a phone conversation in which Brian politely answered some questions we had.
We were a bit surprised at Brian’s somewhat-lax approach in the weeks leading up to the wedding but appreciated that he seemed easy to talk to and friendly. Still, we weren’t very comfortable that the chapel doesn’t include rehearsal opportunities. If our wedding had been a bigger, more formal event, the lack of rehearsal would have been a dealbreaker. Fast-forward to the ceremony day, we arrived a few minutes before our scheduled arrival time (about 12:45) and my husband was hoping to get the Bluetooth sound system set up to his phone to make sure it was working. We knew there was the possibility that we wouldn’t be allowed to start preparations until our contracted 1:00 arrival time, however a tour bus had pulled in and my husband was told that he would not be able to speak with Brian until 1:00. Keep in mind, our ceremony was scheduled to begin at 1:30. No rehearsal, can’t speak with anyone, can’t begin set-up until THIRTY MINUTES before the ceremony begins. So, my husband was unable to prepare the sound system even a moment early (though it would have only taken Brian 10 seconds to give him Bluetooth instructions), all the while a tour bus of seniors are milling through the chapel. In fact, the tour didn’t exit the chapel until 1:05. I’m no stickler, but the lack of flexibility on the part of the Chapel isn’t what you want on your wedding day. Add to that, there is no air conditioning. The “bridal changing room” is rough. No A/C or windows. Getting ready to walk down the aisle requires more than a table lamp and a box fan. Especially in the summer months, think really long and hard before committing to a 1/2 hour prep window, no prior meeting or rehearsal, sweltering heat, stagnant air, random tour groups, and a venue manager who can’t be bothered.
If I could rate my experience ZERO stars, I would prefer to. As a resident to the wonderful black hills and a photographer that gives a lot back to the community in free sessions... when I stumbled across the opportunity given to me by the Lord to photograph art, people & scenery that God created I felt beyond blessed. Through my journey of photography I have gotten the pleasure of photography beautiful families and immaculate venues through wedding portraiture. Any day of the week, as advertised the Chapel of the Hills is open to ALL of God’s children-to come as they are, photograph what they please. But BEWARE! If you reserve a wedding slot to be married there- they turn it forbidden fruit that thrive by the profits of those donations and funds of said event. They are brash, harsh snide and sinful I’m the ways they treat the ENTIRE wedding party, their families and anyone else affiliated to the wedding like photographer’s. Since 2011 I have captured radiantly in love newlyweds and incredible venues, but mark my words the amount of UNPROFESSIONALISM, ABSURD, and DISGRACEFUL behaviors that the volunteers displayed in front of the pastor, family, & bystanders trying to visit this (what was supposed to be sacred place) is unfathomable.
Visiting this location it was quite the opposite in the most disheartening way. A couple family friends relied on this venue to make their day serendipitous, and the staff/volunteers ensured the opposite experience by yelling at customers, being rude in their tones, and not accommodating anything that was within a signed contract. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND getting married at this venue. Save yourself the disappointment and visit anywhere but this “God fearing” location.
It was beautiful and the perfect setting for an intimate wedding without costing us a small fortune. We were married in the late spring and it couldn't have been prettier there.
Perfect for a couple looking for a simple yet stunning location.
Chapel in the Hills’ simplicity was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a space that made us feel one with God as we made our vows. The scenery outside is beautiful and the peacefulness of the Chapel needs nothing special to be stunning.
Everything was just so dreamy. It was surely hot that day but I didn't really mind. They provide an officiant and an organist if you prefer to have both for a very reasonable amount.
The most beautiful place to be married in Rapid City! A gorgeous historic ornate wooden church. There are a lot of restrictions for this location but it is worth giving these things up. Our out of town guests were stunned at its beauty.
