We had a beach wedding in Sandbridge so we wanted to include plenty of seafood options. At Marcy’s suggestion we went with a seafood boil for the rehearsal dinner and it was a hit! No worries if seafood isn't your jam: they have plenty of other options including mac & cheese that I still dream about. Our family has a lot of foodies and they were all blown away. If I had a dollar for every time someone said it was the best meal they ever had our wedding would have been free!

And when the weather called for massive storms, Joanie and the team had the best attitude for doing everything possible to make the night amazing. They also seamlessly executed a room flip and ran an efficient bar for our guests all night. Our goodie bag made a delicious dinner of leftovers the first night of our honeymoon. I HIGHLY recommend.

om to eat and enjoy a crabcake ( and she does not like crab), and I also ate one of the mini ham brioche appetizers and liked it (and I do not eat ham!). We chose to do a buffet with a plated Caesar salad. At the buffet we had the chicken with roasted red peppers, spinach, and feta, the slow roasted herb encrusted prime rib, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables. We even opted to do a macaroni and cheese station with toppings including lobster, bacon, fried onions, and so much more. To top off the night, we did a s'mores station that was a huge hit! Everyone raved about the food, and they were wonderful in assuring that the bride and groom were served their plates first- we did not even have to get up to make our plate! I had been told by many people that on my wedding day I would not get a chance to eat- well they made sure I had that chance! Even during pictures they carried up trays of the appetizers to serve to the wedding party while others were in cocktail hour. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this caterer, and highly recommend to go with them!

nly client they had and made sure we were comfortable with everything every step of the way. They're not only caterers, but they handled the rentals, and beyond. We had made custom chargers for the tables, and they were sure to use them but also collect them to keep them from being stolen at the end of the night. We also had coozies and special champagne glasses for people to keep that they made sure was displayed and used! Our guests raved about the food. The Cocktail Hour, the Charcuterie Boards on each Table, The Duet Plates... even down to the late night Milk & Cookie Shots and later the Pretzels for the bus ride home! We also had them do our Wedding Cake and many of our guests were in awe of the amazing flavor of the Strawberry and Creamsicle layered cake. Marcy and Joanie cared about everything being perfect, down to finding boards to cover up mud puddles, dealing with late transpo buses (which was not their hire) and even helping come up with ideas for our rain plan to transform original ideas to incorporate into the new rain plan ideas. The one thing I'll also recommend, in case it doesn't usually come in the package is that we had our own waitress assigned to us who really took care of us, who gave the lead singer of the band a thumbs up for me when I couldn't get up and even putting spray deodorant on me when I realized I had forgotten! Because of her, we got to eat all the food, have drinks whenever we wanted, and really be able to enjoy the Wedding! I wouldn't take even a nano second in hiring Chef by Design again, their custom service, attention to detail, and all round amazing work will never be forgotten. Through your influence, the bar for which every other catering business in VA Beach is measured should forever be set by you. All other businesses, whether it be bar or restaurant should fall in line and learn from your example. It is our belief that you set the standard in VA Beach and our hope is that others will learn of you by any means necessary, including this letter. From a culinary and service standpoint you are truly in a class of your own and you are deserving of being one of the most coveted food and service professionals in the Hampton Roads. There are very few chefs who could pull off such an exceptional menu for over 100 guests and maintain the integrity of each dish as it was intended; in addition to having a staff that provides a separate beer or wine pairing for each of the five courses and are able to time it flawlessly. The NY Times would award you no less than three stars for achieving this on a consistent level given the quality of production on both ends. Our guests have said to us time after time that it was the best dinner that they have had at a wedding or otherwise. Chef John Telfer should be commended for his ability to execute at such a high level. the food. The service and hard work that went into making our wedding such a success cannot be valued and it is hard to put into words the appreciation of their hard work. The staff helped move my chairs from inside to outside, and then back inside for the reception, due to the rain. The coordination between them and my planner was amazing and without them, we couldn't have pulled off my perfect image of an outdoor ceremony. The food was so good and it was very important to us to have our guests recognize the great food at the wedding. Everyone raved about every single thing that was served and it was no wonder that all the food was gone at the end of the night. Everyone left satisfied and the food was better than expected being served in large quantities. They provide full set up and break down and handle all rentals as needed so there is little for you to personally stress over as they have everything handled. Joanie and Marcy will work with you as much as you need to plan the perfect menu and work within your budget. They both are amazing and you will feel like friends instantly when working with them. They even came with us to our rentals appointment to help layout tables and help with our overall decorations. The buffet and cocktail food items were perfect. Our food was so delicious (all our guests keep telling us), and they even made up a to-go box for my husband and me to eat it all over again the next day. :) I would recommend contacting by phone, rather than email. They are quicker to respond with a direct phone call.

Marcy and her staff (and Chef husband!) far exceded even our expectations! Being the hosts of the event, we were able to see just how perfectly everything came together; no detail was overlooked! Marcy and her staff helped us to plan the perfect event and our friends are still talking about how delicious all of the food was, from the cocktail hour hors d'oeuvres through all of the reception food. A favorite both in taste and "curb appeal" was the mashed potato bar (served in martini glasses with unique toppings). The potatoes were the best I've ever had! The staff was so nice, attentive and friendly; nothing was overlooked! Marcy made us feel comfortable from the start, she knows the venues and does her homework! She also respected some of our little nuances (ie, purchasing our own alcohol and setups (which she helped with the numbers), speciality drinks and how to handle, etc, etc...) She had some really good ideas and followed through on everything. She was easy to get it touch with during our planning and when she did get busy with other events, always got back to us and apologized for any delay. The only thing that didn't go as planned (because there has to be "something", right?), was that the outdoor cocktail hour bartender put a tip jar out (we had open bar and had requested no tip jar). We let it go as it wasn't put out at the indoor reception and the staff apologized for the oversight afterwards. Apparently they had a new bartender who did not get the word. So just make sure to make that very clear if you also do not want. But that was the only issue and a small one. The staff all remained after the event for cleanup and they were there early for setup, so we did tip all of them and they were very appreciative! In summary, we will never use another caterer, we love Chef By Design!!!

so many details - Joanie and Marcy helped me to bring everything I wanted into the wedding and reception. I can't thank them enough. After meeting and tasting with other caterers in the area, I just KNEW that this company is the BEST! They cook the food on-site with Chef John and his team, and I still am getting calls about the food. Their staff paid such attention to every detail, were so friendly and helpful, but professional! we would have to get married in NY. We have a very upscale palate and are in the food business, so the level of creativity for our menu had to be top notch. We heard about Chef by Design by our lighting company, and were told we HAD to meet with them. From the moment we met with Joanie, Marcy, and Chef John, we immediately knew that they would be our caterer. At our first 3 hour meeting (!), they brought out food to us, not knowing our palate's but absolutely blew us away with the level of excellence in each course. We then created our 5 course plated menu from scratch, had follow up Skype meetings to tweak the menu, flew back for the tasting, and couldn't have been more pleased with everything. The level of service and timing we expected for this 5 course reception, with wine and beer pairings with each course, would make even the most distinguished and experienced caterer nervous, but Chef by Design staff was nothing short of perfect in their service and presentation. We cannot say enough about this company, and truly how amazing their food, personalized service and attention to detail was. There is NO OTHER caterer that could have done what they did. The staff made sure they were checking in with us to see what we liked and didn't like but also gave me and my fiance some space to discuss our menu during the tasting. At Chef By Design they were happy to change up some of their standard dishes to fit our needs and tastes, but we didn't have too change much because their food is amazing. Other catering companies we consulted with left us feeling underwhelmed with impersonal, rushed consultations and just did not provide overall the level of service we were looking for. Chef By Design representatives even attended my site walk-through. I could tell they were as excited about the event as I was and appreciated that they took the time on a weekend to come and provide suggestions and solutions as we worked through event logistics. On the day of our wedding I can't tell you how fantastic it was to not worry about anything related to our bar, food or service. Not only were the servers and bartenders that work for Chef By Design professional and polite, but the company also handles "back of the house"/ behind the scenes services most brides don't realize are crucial to a well executed event. During our buffet dinner guests were never left waiting for a dish and we never ran out of food. I still get compliments over a year later from guests on how much they loved the food at our wedding. But you would never know that because Chef By Design made it look easy. The food was AWESOME, and my family and friends are still talking about it a month later. At our tasting we got to talk to the chef in person and ask questions, make changes, etc. We requested a few minor changes, and they nailed it at our wedding. Besides the food quality, their staff was so attentive and went above and beyond at our reception. My husband can't eat spinach, so even though our guests were having a spinach salad, Chef By Design served my husband a special salad with different greens. Also, as soon as we sat down for our meal, our guests started approaching us to talk and congratulate us. Marcy was so observant and offered to make an announcement so that our guests would give us a chance to eat first. She had just had shoulder surgery and was still in a sling but still attended our wedding. We were so impressed, and I highly recommend Chef By Design as a caterer. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

m to personally develop their menu which is unlike many other caterers. Given Chef John prepares and cooks everything, the menu is unlimited. The food is beyond 5 stars. I live in a very metropolitan area where I have had the pleasure of eating at several 4-5 star restaurants including those by famous chefs and Chef John’s food was equal if not better than them. There was not an obstacle that they could not overcome. We had a few restrictions in our menu including no alcohol could be used and the food had to be mostly (90%) gluten free. This was not even a hurdle for Chef John. We also wanted to have Guinness at our wedding. This is hard to do because Guinness must be poured with a nitrogen tap or it is not a quality pour. When another vendor said they could do this, but ended up not being able to only a day before the wedding Marcy and Joanie stepped in and made sure we had Guinness at the wedding. Marcy and Joanie also did all the rentals based off what we said we wanted for the table layout. The day before the wedding my husband decided he wanted chair covers so I frantically called Joanie and Marcy. They not only got the chair covers, but they did the most amazing job setting up the reception hall. They took our ideas and made it something magical!! From cocktail hour to dessert, that was gluten free, it was perfect. We were like family from the minute we met. It is a gift to have a wonderful caterer for your special day, but it is a blessing to have the most wonderful people doing it for you!

des the outstanding tastes, which in my opinion is very important. Chef John was awesome! As for starters (in cocktail hour), I personally liked the crab cakes very much! They were so delicious. My (now) husband enjoyed the tuna parfait. Slightly disappointed at the main courses on the day of though. Both of the steaks and sea basses were overcooked, and also looked quite different from the previous tasting. Understandable still. We absolutely loved our wedding cake which was also done by Chef by Design! It was a vanilla chiffon cake which looked super elegant and was very tasty! It melted in your mouth. Unlike many other cakes, it wasn't too sweet but just hit the spot! Every guest loved it too! The other desserts were also great, but just melted too fast under the sun, so many of them ended up being wasted, which was a shame. It was really hot on that day. Our wedding reception was held under a tent, but the dessert table wasn't covered unfortunately - but not their fault. We probably should have plated the desserts and delivered to the guests. Services-wise were all perfect, nothing to complain about. Overall, it was absolutely a pleasure working with Chef by Design. Would recommend!

Joanie and Marcy sat down with us for our initial consultation and walked us through their entire menu (more food than you can imagine). My husband and I then individually picked out what we imagined having on our big day. Surprise- nothing was similar. So, Joanie and Marcy helped us narrow our choices down to a fluid and complementary list. They even dreamed up new ideas (we both love pizza- so, why not have a gourmet flatbread bar?). A few weeks later, they provided us a tasting of the menu items we had chosen. All of them. Oh my gosh... it was the most delicious and filling dinner ever. As we tasted each item, they made notes about what we liked and didn't like (more salt, no pomegranate seeds, etc.), and we extremely willing to alter their menu items to our taste. As if their impeccable customer service and decadent food weren't enough, they went out of their way to make our special day as seamless as possible. I decided to redo the entire seating arrangement at my venue, having long skinny cafeteria style tables rather than the typical rounds. Joanie helped with that whole process by drawing up a diagram and making sure it was exactly how I envisioned the space. They also coordinated all of our rentals (how many we would need, placing the order, returning the rentals) and were at our wedding venue the entire day setting up. I can't say enough about Chef by Design. Guests were raving all night (and still are, months later) about how delicious the food was. I didn't imagine that when I signed a caterer all of this would come with it. They went FAR beyond our expectations, and I can't thank them enough!

Weeks later friends are still talking about their crab cakes!! We opted for tapas selections, and really - every one was better than the next!! We had nearly nothing left over! I would not say they are a 'budget' option, but the service on site was phenomenal. The servers were so kind and thoughtful, I really don't have enough WONDERFUL things to say, except I was they were located in my home town so I could use them for our next party!!! Truly, truly exceptional service. Not inexpensive - but because of the quality of food and level of superior service they still rate a 5 star for value - well worth every penny!!

The day of the wedding, we had to unexpectedly move the ceremony from the beach to the reception venue and thus move all of the furniture that had already been set up for the reception. Joanie and her team jumped in with all hands on deck to assist in any way that they could, whether it be moving tables, or helping my mom to manage the stress of the unexpected change. Chef by Design also worked seamlessly with our DJ to coordinate the evening so everything ran smoothly. I was waited on all evening by Joanie's team, and they handled any issues that arose directly with the DJ so that my mother and I could enjoy the evening. We paid for a caterer and we got an entire day-of event team! I cannot speak kindly enough about Chef by Design and our experience with them. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend them to anyone. The food was to die for, the presentation was magnificent, and you will NOT beat the all-around service. I promise you will not be disappointed!

Catering is more than food (which in this case is THE best!!). I had numerous comments about the adequacy of numbers of catering staff and their friendliness! The innkeeper of the venue told me she had never dealt with a caterer who had enough staff and did not have her running here and there for ice and other needs. She had nothing to do our entire party! She told me this was the best caterer she had ever seen! I am still receiving phone calls about our party..with special comments about the food!! Several guests asked who our caterers were so they could use them for future events! Nice work, John, Marcy, Joanie....and all your professional staff! I was even skeptical that the tasting was only that good because they were cooking on a smaller scale but the wedding day proved that the food was exceptional, 4 months later and everyone is still raving about the food. The service leading up to the day was exceptional, from planning the menu, picking out the table settings and even recommending some other amazing vendors, they really understood "us" and what we wanted for our day. The food fit (comfortable, approachable, kinda fancy and delicious!), the decor blew my mind, she took the pieces i had given her and ran with it. I was going for a whimsy with mason jars and such, she had the "food display" (Joanie's words, I hate the word "buffet") decked to the nine with her own touches that really followed my theme. I can't say enough about how amazing Joanie is! The thought of having a coordinator was strange to me but as the day approached I realized I needed somebody that day to take care of the details so that I could focus on, well, me. I hired Joanie for the day of but she helped me so much more than that. The whole weekend she was by our side taking care of every last thing from the days leading up to the wedding, the rehearsal and the day of(my groom forgot socks, she got him socks). My wedding was on a Sunday and from Saturday morning on I had the most peaceful tranquil happy days due to her amazing organizing efforts. Her team was out of this world taking care of everything for us. I could write forever on the million details she paid attention to that perhaps only I noticed, but I noticed. Hiring Chef by Design and Joanie was by far the best money spent in our wedding and considering the quality and level of service it was the best value of our wedding as well. They made my year of planning come together and without them it would not have been as amazing as it was. I could not be happier or more appreciative. Oh! The menu!
