About this vendor
> About Me
I’m Stephen, a professional musician and wedding DJ based in the Triangle. I’ve spent my career working in music, both performing and teaching, which has shaped the way I approach weddings. I care deeply about how music supports a moment, how energy builds over the course of a night, and how thoughtful planning leads to an experience that feels natural and effortless.
> A Fully Customized Approach
When I DJ a wedding, everything is customized. From ceremony and cocktail hour through the final song of the reception, I work closely with each couple to understand their musical taste, guest mix, and overall vision. Rather than relying on preset playlists or generic wedding formulas, I curate music intentionally so each part of the day flows smoothly into the next.
> Professional, Calm, and Behind the Scenes
Couples often describe my style as calm, professional, and easy to work with. I handle announcements, transitions, and coordination with other vendors in a way that keeps things moving without pulling focus. My goal is to be present and organized behind the scenes, allowing you and your guests to stay in the moment and enjoy the day.
> Experience and Services
I regularly DJ weddings throughout Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill and am comfortable working in a wide range of venues, from intimate spaces to larger event settings. In addition to music, I provide ceremony audio, wireless microphones, and simple, tasteful lighting designed to enhance the room without overwhelming it.
> Reading the Room
Music looks different at every wedding. Some couples want a packed dance floor all night, others prefer a more relaxed celebration with a few standout moments, and many fall somewhere in between. My role is to read the room, adapt in real time, and make thoughtful decisions that support the energy you want for your wedding.
> Let’s Connect!
If you’re looking for a DJ who values collaboration, clear communication, and a refined, guest-focused approach, I’d love to connect and learn more about your plans.
DJ Stephen Downing is a premier wedding DJ operating out of Hillsborough, NC.

Stephen was so great to work with for our wedding! From our first call with him, we knew that he was dedicated to our vision, and we really appreciated his flexibility throughout t...
he process. His package pricing was customizable to meet the needs of our budget, and his organizing tools allowed us to adjust our timeline / songs / requests as we continued throughout the wedding planning process. He also provided some helpful tips for timeline and setup based on his substantial experience with weddings! He created a song list for dinner and cocktail hour that we absolutely loved and was exactly what we were looking for, and we’ve been listening to it regularly even since the wedding! And multiple guests came up to us during the wedding to say how much they were enjoying the music. Even though we had a smaller wedding, he did a great job of reading guests’ energy and there were always people having a good time on the dance floor!
As a queer couple looking for a DJ to set a tone of celebration and queer joy for the evening, working with Stephen was honestly such a gift. We would absolutely recommend him as a DJ for any event!

sat down with us to go over our must plays and general vibes that we wanted for the wedding - and he nailed it! From our pre-ceremony, all the way to the end of reception he had everything handled, running smoothly and sounding fantastic! The songs he chose to mix in matched our vibes perfectly and were always bangers, and the level of sound quality he was able to provide all over our venue was magical. So many of our guests told us how amazing the music was. There is no one I’d ever love to recommend more than him!

cial request songs during the ceremony. But Stephen’s skills really shone during the reception. Not only was he an exceptional emcee, he was the person who kept our dance floor full ALL NIGHT! He mixed songs so well, even though we already knew many of the songs it was like hearing them for the first time. All night no one could stop talking about how great the DJ was, including ourselves! Do yourself a favor and have DJ Stephen at your wedding, you won’t regret it! We might plan another party just to have him there!

t and more for our February 2026 wedding in Wake Forest.
So many of our family and friends shared with us that they loved the music lineup Stephen queued up for the night that kept the party alive all night long. Having wide variety of musical tastes ourselves and us wanting to cater to our family and friends favorites, Stephen had an ear to seamlessly blend all types of genres together moving from today’s pop/ country to our Latin favorites to classic rock, he had everyone engaged and on the dance floor. When my dad and I couldn’t decide on a song for our father-daughter dance, Stephen created for us the perfect mix of our favorite two songs. We put full trust in Stephen to select for us our exit song for the night and he nailed it.
Stephen is super organized, thorough in the details and collaborative partner - a true professional that you can trust in for your special day.

5! Stephen was easy to work with from the beginning. We had a quick phone call at the inception of planning to get a rough outline of what we were looking for. Stephen provided a handy shared document for us to brainstorm the ceremony and reception music from the start of the day to the end! I was a very DIY bride, so I’m so thankful that he shared this document with us early so that I could get to work!
Not only did Stephen play our favorite tunes on the dance floor, but he also announced for our whole reception and provided the setup for our ceremony. His setup is impressive and made complete by some extremely fun dance floor lighting. Honestly, working with Stephen made my wedding planning a breeze. I didn’t have to think about the actual flow of the night at all. He has weddings down to a science, taking into consideration every part of the day to make sure the vibe is always right!
If my husband and I could get married again, we would absolutely pick Stephen Downing! I wish our reception could have lasted forever. I’m still wishing to get back on that dance floor with all of our friends! Thank you, Stephen, for the most magical night!

th and very responsive. As the day approached we met again to discuss the details of the day and vibe we wanted for various parts of the event. There were areas we had very specific requests for, and other areas where we wanted him to have more control and freedom. When the day finally arrived, both the emceeing and DJing were perfect. The sound for the ceremony was fantastic, he guided guests smoothly throughout the cocktail hour and dinner, and he kept people dancing all night. He read the vibe of the crowd and was able to match it perfectly.
Despite how well the event went, I think the most memorable thing was how easy it was to work with him. When everything was getting chaotic in the final weeks before the event, and we were pulled ten different directions at once, it was so reassuring and relieving to hear a vendor say that he would be able to work with whatever we could give him. I can't recommend him highly enough!

hould make him your first choice. He understands what you're going for, and needs very little instruction to help you achieve your vision. This may not seem like a big deal right now, but trust me - having competent low maintenance vendors who know the venue on the day of your wedding is extremely valuable. Stephen does that so well.

DJ Stephen was always very responsive and easy to communicate with. He took the time to understand our music preferences and played a mix of songs that kept everyone partying on the dance floor. He also had a little notepad for people to make requests.
He arrived early to set up his equipment and was ready to go before any guests arrived. He kept the energy level high throughout the night. He was also very flexible when it came to making announcements, especially when we had some last minute changes.
Super recommend for a queer friendly, cool, and professional dj!

also let us have as much of a say in everything as we wanted. We also liked that it was just him and not a whole big company, so we knew who we were getting and didn't have to wait around for responses like we have with some of our other vendors.
And we loved that he took requests from our guests! We would definitely recommend DJ Stephen
Stephen and Kimmy were so awesome to work with! They really helped set the vibe for our wedding and even joined in on the dancing from behind their booth.

f we needed a DJ or could get by with something like Spotify, but I’m so glad we made the decision to hire a DJ, Stephen specifically. I also didn’t have a clear vision of music needs, so I was grateful for Stephen’s insight - he helped us figure out what music and transitions would work best for our size and setting when we were being indecisive. He was easy going and flexible, accommodating a very last minute change to our playlist. Also quite impressed with his ability to read the room and get people on the floor, even with our wedding being as small as it was! Overall, the vibe ended up being exactly what I wanted thanks to Stephen. Highly recommend - thanks so much!
Attentive, detail-oriented, experienced, and loaded with everything we needed for a fantastic wedding reception, DJ Downing was the perfect wedding DJ! Highly recommended!

we felt ready going into the day. It was so nice to not have to worry about any of it. He came early to set up and was so professional. He handled our cocktail hour music, announcements, mics for speeches, and got everyone dancing right away after dinner! We loved his selection of music and that he took requests from all our guests! His wife was there to assist, and they were both dancing behind their booth the whole time, and it was awesome to see them having so much fun too. You can tell he really enjoys what he does.
We would definitely recommend him to anyone!
DJ Stephen was awesome! The reception was an absolute blast, he had our friends and family out on the dancefloor all night long. ABSOLUTELY recommend!!
