Perched at 5,500 feet on the slopes of the Bitterroot Mountains, and only an hour drive south of Missoula Airport, our lodge is the highest private venue in the valley. From every angle, guests are treated to sweeping, unobstructed views of the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountain ranges, a breathtaking backdrop for your wedding, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon, bachelorette/bachelor parties, anniversaries, or events.
The lodge offers both indoor and outdoor spaces, giving you the freedom to design your celebration in your own unique style. Our stunning zero-entry deck, handcrafted from rich Western Larch, is a true showpiece. With sweeping, panoramic views of the Bitterroot Valley, the 28’ x 28’ deck offers seamless access from both the lodge lawn and covered entry, creating a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. Perfect for wedding ceremonies, receptions, family gatherings, retreats, and celebrations of all kinds, this new deck invites connection, beauty, and unforgettable moments in the heart of the mountains.
Our quaint grass area seamlessly transitions from the deck to the lodge and to our Flathead Pearock patio. This intimate space is ideal for gathering and unwinding. Centered around a Breeo smokeless firepit, it’s the perfect place to connect with friends and family under the open mountain sky. Settle into one of the comfy Adirondack chairs, sip a hot toddy or mulled cider, and watch the stars and moon dance over the Bitterroot Range. The scent of cedar drifts from the nearby hot tub, where others might be soaking after a long day. With overnight accommodations for up to 15 guests (8 guests included in your overnight stay package) and the option for van or tent camping at no additional charge, Downing Mountain Lodge blends comfort and adventure seamlessly.
Our all-inclusive, affordable venue rate gives you exclusive access to the lodge and grounds for 48 hours, making it easy to design, set up, and break down an unforgettable event with the support of talented local planners, caterers, musicians, and vendors, ensuring a seamless and stress-free planning experience.

Welcome. We are John and Valli, owner/managers of Downing Mountain Lodge and Retreat. Since 2008, John has been enthusiastically hosting guests at the lodge, where we share not only the stunning Bitterroot mountainside but also our commitment to wellness and connection. Valli, a former lodge manager, XC Ski Area Operator and Parks and Recreation Director supports John in managing the lodge, providing exceptional service and a warm, welcoming atmosphere for our guests. Together, we are excited to offer a unique wedding venue and retreat for those looking to explore Montana’s Big Sky country, reconnect with nature, and experience the sense of community that makes this place truly special.
