I shall preface this review by saying I did eventually get what was promised and paid for. And the album was absolutely beautiful...
...And I got it almost five years after the date of the wedding in question.
So, I will go over every detail and provide all the documented/ photographed evidence to support why I will never, in a million years, recommend this photographer to anyone for anything.
My mother and I contacted Mr. Dawson regarding engagement photographs as well as a wedding package (photography of prep, ceremony, reception, etc. Plus wedding album and copies of photos on a flash drive.
The wedding package was somewhere in the tune of $3k or so. Fair enough, I know these things are pricey, and my family had no objections to spending that kind of money on my husband and I. Contract signed, all seems well. The wedding is lovely, no issues with him then.
The date of my wedding was April 21, 2018.
My husband had to leave on a year long deployment very shortly after our wedding (less than three months in). At this time, I'll admit to not picking out the photos I wanted in my album for a few weeks- work and my absent husband keeping my mind otherwise occupied. Mr. Dawson assures me this is fine. He delivers a flash drive with every picture he's taken (image 1) and tells me to let him know once I have picked 100 to be in the album. Again, I have no issue with this.
I finish picking out my desired pictures after long workdays and a medical emergency, but at last I send him the list of chosen images. The time is April/May 2019.
I check to make sure he got my email with the numbers of chosen photos, and Mr Dawson confirms he has and will get back to me w/ layout for my perusal in a few weeks. Date of message is July 9, 2019. (Image 2)
Fast forward to February 2020. He lost his copies of my pictures and requests I give him a flash drive w/ the chosen pictures I want. A bit of an annoying inconvenience, but I hand him a flash drive as requested in person. Again, he confirms he has them and will send me a layout in a few days. Date he says this is March 18, 2020. (Image 3)
After several unanswered and unreturned calls over the following months, I text him on April 7, 2021 (image 4). I inquire into the status of my album, as I have heard nothing since our March 2020 conversation.
Nothing.
For the next 2 years, Mr Dawson ignores any calls (even admitted to me on one occasion that he was in fact, avoiding my calls) and texts with a scattered response once in a blue moon. When he does reply, he gives another excuse, and another assurance that my album will soon be done. He blames covid, the government, and a lack of money. When prompted, he agrees he had been paid in full, but cannot at any point tell me why the money my family paid him was not used for my album. He would often cite needing to have another gig to get money to make the album. At best, this suggests he is terrible with money.
Only after many ultimatums finally ending in telling him I would sue for breach of contract did I finally recieve the album in February of 2023.
Was the album gorgeous and well made? Yes.
Was it worth the anxiety, frustration, wait, and utter lack of professional courtesy?
A thousand times no.
I will let the texts speak for themselves. Note how I did not constantly hound him, and the amount of time I waited before prodding again.
We were originally referred by Dave & Lupe Louis of Dynamic Sounds as we were looking for a photographer for our 10 year wedding anniversary ceremony. After contacting 3 different photographers, we chose Dylan as he met our needs along with reasonable rates. Dylan arrived early, took tons of great photos and was really great with capturing all those wonderful moments, especially getting beautiful shots of our two daughters. Completely warm and felt as though we were all friends before. Great to work with. So much that we came back to Hawaii 3 years later and decided to have a family photo session done at Lanikuhonua this past week! Dylan was extremely flexible with our location and schedule as we were limited to our options at the location due to larger events. Would definitely work with Dylan again and highly recommend! Thank you Dylan so much for taking the time to capture these wonderful moments in our lives! Mahalo!
We recently had a small ceremony, just immediate family, and hired Bliss to shoot some family photos. Dylan was amazing, we originally asked for only an hour or so, but It started raining RIGHT before our ceremony, and he was incredibly patient and accommodating.
From the start, you can tell how passionate he is about photography, and that it's more than just a job for him. He manages to make the shoot really fun and natural, even when it's basically raining! Everyone in my family loved him, and we've already got him booked for our post bridal shots when we come back from our honeymoon!!
Can't recommend him enough, thank you so much Dylan!! :D
Dylan Dawson is an true professional photographer. He had so much energy from the beginning to the end of the event. He knew how to pose everyone to get the best shot and had many ideas to get variations from the wedding ceremony and reception. My fiance and I would recommend Dylan Dawson to anyone who needs a professional photographer.
Dylan is a very hardworking photographer, who is incredibly passionate at creating beautiful photos. This makes his work original, unique and stylish. We had him photograph our engagement and wedding photos, and we're glad we did. He's a very hardworking person, which makes him very busy. He might miss a phone call or two from you, but he's always delivered and gave his all to provide unforgettable memories in pictures.
I love how Dylan is so passionate about what he does and in getting the perfect shot. Before meeting him, I was attracted to the photo books he had on display at wedding expos. There are so many photographers at the wedding expos, but I was drawn to what he had on display and just loved what I saw. When I met him, he is so easy to talk to and funny and made me feel so comfortable. He was also very helpful in recommending other awesome vendors that he's worked with in the past.
We did our engagement session with him and I was so pleased with the results. I liked so many of the shots that it was difficult to decide which one we would use for our Save the Date card and which we would use to have guests sign at the wedding.
Our wedding was just the other week so we haven't received our photos yet, but I am so excited to see them and will recommend him to anybody who needs a professional photographer.
Lots of energy, hard worker & loves what he does!
My brother and sister-in-law used Dylan Dawson when they got married. I was part of the wedding party. He was a great photographer and did everything he could to capture every detail of the wedding. I don't think there was a moment where he took a break to even have a bite to eat! He's very passionate about his work and was actually a fashion photographer prior to becoming a wedding photographer. He gave my brother and sister-in-law hundreds of photos. He had to change his memory card a few times, from beginning to end, because he took so many. This was also because my brother and sister-in-law booked his biggest package. Great work and great guy!
Dylan's photographs are absolutely stunning. We had a package for engagement photos & wedding photos, and although we haven't gotten our wedding photos back yet, the engagement photos were to die for. Even completely unedited, they were pristine. He is easy to work with, really personable, and does everything he can to make sure he gets the best photos. I am dying to see the wedding photos because I can't even imagine how amazing they're going to be. He has 2 shooters for both shoots, and gets pictures from every angle, in every light. I could not recommend him more highly. Phenomenal!
I met Dylan at a bridal expo. What really sold me on him was that he was the only photographer that really talked to me about his approach and passion for photography. Everyone just basically gave me a flyer with their prices and left it for me to look at their albums. Dylan took me through his photos and really engaged me in the process. And his unlimited hours package is an awesome value.
He was great with our engagement shoot and worked really hard with his assistant, Robert, on the day of our wedding... They were all over the place and showed up when I asked them to. And as a little side plus, Dylan provides a dress form mannequin for taking pictures of the wedding dress instead of having to take pictures of it hanging on a hanger. I would definitely recommend Dylan Dawson to anyone!
Dylan was awesome. He is very passionate about his work and it shows. He is very professional and easy to get along with. I felt very at ease with him and our pictures are gorgeous. I highly recommend Dylan to do your photography.
Dylan works hard for you... He will do whatever it takes to get a good picture. Engagement photos were included in the cost and we took pictures for almost 10 hours (two sessions). We got some of our wedding pictures already because we wanted to use them in our thank you notes and Dylan worked to get them to us. We can't wait to see how the rest of the pictures turned out!
Dylan is BEYOND what one may expect!! My pictures are FAB-U-LOUS!!! And....he will give you the rights to print your pictures, other photographers will not give you the copyright. He was there from beginning (9AM) to the end (11PM). I give him a 5+++
Dylan was an awesome person to work with. He got some amazing shots for our engagement shoot. He was so easy to work with. I love how he takes so much pride in the work that he does. He worked so hard on our wedding day! I can't wait to see the pictures. He is highly recomennded.
i haven't even gotten my pictures back yet, but Dylan was absolutely wonderful to work with. everyone at the party told me that he's the hardest working photographer they've ever seen, and that's absolutely true! he ran all around trying to get the best shots, and he was such fun to work with (his cool english accent helps!). he stayed till the end of my program (after the dancing, too!) and made sure that i got all the pictures that i wanted. plus, he was an AWESOME deal! i highly, highly recommend him!!
