About this vendor
Emma Petersen Photography is a business in Chicago, IL, that specializes in documentary-style wedding and elopement photography. She immortalizes stories through a documentary lens, capturing the raw, real, and every candid memory in between.
Let’s dive into the details: my photographic approach focuses on seeing your day through a documentary lens. But what does that ~really~ mean? I love being a fly-on-the-wall and letting you make memories with your people instead of looking down the barrel of a camera lens all day. I love capturing those small and in-between moments of you actually enjoying your time with your people instead of posing endlessly for hours.
I’m not the photographer for you if you’re looking for a completely Pinterest-perfect and manufactured gallery. My attention on wedding days is about letting moments unfold naturally and not over-directing your day - I prefer to let those TRULY candid moments and real emotion shine through above all else. If you’re picking up what I’m putting down then we are the perfect match🤍

If you're wondering if you should book Emma as your photographer it's an absolute YES! Truly look no further she is your girl. She is a ray of sunshine who will make your day even ...
better than you imagined. She spends so much time, even before the big day, to make sure that she understands your vision and what you are wanting. She has such a natural way of making everyone feel so comfortable in front of the lens and truly felt like having another friend along with us for the day. Besides all of the above her images are absolutely breathtaking and she has such a knack for capturing all the moments big and small. I cannot rave about her enough- trust me- you want her as your photographer!
My husband and I chose Emma as our wedding photographer for a couple of reasons: recommendations from friends, a connection through Loyola University, and her focus on documentary-...
style photography. We are so incredibly pleased with our decision.
Emma is a true professional--she is incredibly efficient when working on a timeline, quick-thinking, and flexible. My friends and family members were impressed with how she organized dozens of family members for pictures so quickly. Weddings can be high-pressure events, but I felt very at-ease with Emma and assured that I was in the hands of a photographer who knows what she is doing. I felt like I could relax and enjoy my day more. Besides her calming presence on the wedding day, the actual pictures themselves are gorgeous. We got a mix of posed shots and more documentary-style shots capturing candid moments with our family and friends, and we absolutely love both. The posed shots are incredibly well-composed. Emma did a great job instructing us with how to pose and making us feel comfortable. I am surprised by how much I have taken to some of the more candid photos, especially the dance floor pictures. I think it can be hard to make those look good, but Emma did a great job capturing the fun energy we felt while dancing with our family and friends on our wedding night.
Through all of this, Patrick and I enjoyed getting to know Emma more. She is a really sweet and easy-going person who is a joy to be around. We also really appreciated Emma's partner, Hanako, who captured some absolutely beautiful photos from our day (including some of our favorite pictures of our cat). We highly recommend adding a second photographer to fully capture the day.
TLDR: We highly recommend choosing Emma to photograph your big day. She is very sweet and talented, and if you choose to work with her, you will be in good hands.
Emma was absolutely wonderful to work with, and we couldn't be happier with our experience. She kept us organized from the start, meeting with us multiple times to understand our v...
ision for the day and help us develop our wedding day timeline. She was also just a joy to be around and we genuinely enjoyed having with us throughout our wedding day.
Most importantly, we love the photos from the day. Emma captured so many beautiful candid moments and perfectly preserved the feeling and emotion of the day. We can't recommend Emma enough!
I cannot imagine our wedding day without Emma Petersen! She was an absolute godsend—as a photographer, as a chaos manager, as a person! My husband’s family has had plenty of weddin...
gs on their side and each and every one of them came up commending us on having “the best photographer.” Emma is so passionate about her work and that shines through how she approaches each photo. Emma truly cares about her clients, from helping us make a timeline for the day that prioritized our needs to running down the road and picking up our lunch for us when we had downtime. She was lightning fast to send us a generous amount of previews and we can’t stop looking at them. I want to get married all over again just so we can have Emma as our photographer again. I will treasure the photos she’s taken as well as the impact she had on our day for the rest of our lives!
Emma was the best! I loved her documentary style approach as we don't love posed photos and Emma came highly recommended from our planner and venue. The part of the day I was least...
looking forward to was family photos and Emma made the process so easy, fast, and not awkward. I also ended up loving our first look and portrait session because Emma made it feel so natural even though I normally don't love having my photo taken. Our friends and family remarked how wonderful Emma was and how much fun it seemed like she was having. She was on the higher end of our photo budget, but our photos came out great, and I don't regret picking her at all!
Emma was truly one of the best decisions we made for our wedding day. From the very beginning, she brought such a calm, grounding presence that instantly made us feel cared for and...
at ease. Her documentary-style approach was exactly what we wanted, and somehow she managed to capture the day so beautifully while making it never feel posed, forced, or performative.
One of the most special moments of the entire day was something Emma recommended: an interactive gathering with our closest people before the ceremony. It allowed us to slow down, hang out, laugh, and actually be together before everything began. That moment not only set the tone for the entire day, it resulted in some of our absolute favorite photos. We’ll treasure them forever.
Emma has an incredible ability to keep things moving and keep you on track without ever pulling you out of the moment. She was present, intuitive, and so naturally in sync with our energy that it felt effortless. We were able to stay grounded, feel the love around us, and truly enjoy every part of the day because of her.
Our guests could not stop raving about Emma and her second photographer, Hank. Multiple people commented on how warm, professional, and seamless they both were. Emma truly felt like part of our family and our group. She matched our vibe at every stage of the day and blended in so naturally that we often forgot she was even there, in the best possible way.
We felt deeply loved, supported, and taken care of by Emma. She didn’t just document our wedding, she understood it. If you’re looking for someone who will capture your day honestly, beautifully, and with so much heart, Emma is it.

e camera for our wedding one year later. Emma truly got to know and understand our vision through multiple talks. On the day, she was not only our photographer but our coordinator/logistics extraordinaire, and even a friend checking in, the handful of times we needed it most. We would hire Emma a thousand times over if given the chance. A wonderful photographer, and a terrific human being.

e but because we got a real sense that she would be a great teammate (really, asset) to have, the day of the wedding.
She not only met but completely EXCEEDED these expectations.
All of her structure, communication, and preparation ahead of time made us feel very aligned and prepared for the wedding day so during the actual day we were able to be present and enjoy every moment. In addition to capturing all of the photos we asked for, Emma was also great support to have the day of the wedding, helping with all the little things like last minute hair adjustments, shoe slips, and whatnot which were definitely outside of the scope of her job. We knew we could rely on her to keep everything and everyone in order all the while keeping a calm, cool, and joyful demeanor. Our wedding party, family, and friends all spoke about how wonderful she was based on their interactions with her. We feel so grateful not only that we’ll get to cherish her photos forever but that she was part of our special day.

dible talent. She is the easiest person to get along with and really made us feel comfortable right off the bat. My husband didn't have strong opinions on decisions made throughout our planning process but after we got off our first call with Emma, he felt very strongly that we needed to book her and I full heartedly agreed!
She listened and took detailed notes on our preferences and she delivered flawlessly. We also hired a content creator and second photographer through her company (shout out to the Sarah's!) and they were a delightful extension of Emma on the day of. Nothing felt overwhelming or rushed and we were able to be fully present in the moment. She even played music during our portrait session to make us feel more comfortable with being in front of the camera.
Emma went above and beyond after the wedding by delivering us all of our content within 24 hours and a wonderful sneak peak gallery with photos that I look at every day - I am obsessed! I can't even imagine what our entire album will look like after seeing how beautiful the sneak peaks turned out. We are so grateful that Emma was part of our day and we will be recommending her to all of our friends! Thank you Emma!!
We truly can't say enough amazing things about Emma. From our very first meeting, we knew she was the photographer for us. She immediately made us feel at ease, and we trusted her ...
vision completely. She took the time to really listen to what was important to us and was incredibly mindful of the parts of the day we anticipated might be stressful—her care and thoughtfulness meant the world to us.
On our wedding day, Emma went above and beyond in every way. She was incredibly organized and kept everything running smoothly and on time, all while making the experience feel relaxed and joyful. Her calm, confident presence helped set the tone for the day, and her ability to gently direct and encourage made everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera.
Her creative eye and attention to detail resulted in photos that are not only stunning, but also deeply personal and full of emotion. She captured both the big, unforgettable moments and the quiet, candid ones we’ll cherish forever.
Emma didn’t just photograph our wedding—she elevated the entire experience. We’re endlessly grateful to her and couldn’t recommend her more highly.

g the way on what our vision is ensuring we were on the same page. Even more so, she was intentional and truly wanted to get to know us as a couple. All of this led to the perfect day and even more perfect pictures capturing our memories. Emma helped make us and our family so comfortable the entire day, with somehow the perfect balance of a calming presence and also your biggest hype woman. Every single one of my family members and bridal party raved about how amazing she was. Going into the wedding planning process we were nervous to find a photographer that made us feel comfortable and also capture our love and relationship like how we feel it, Emma made all of those happen and we could not thank her enough.

ruly listened to our vision and made us feel seen and celebrated in every step of the process.
One of the things that meant the most to us was how kind and sensitive she was about working around our insecurities. She made us feel comfortable in front of the camera, never rushed, and always reassured us that we looked beautiful. Her eye for detail and ability to capture both the big moments and the quiet ones blew us away.
We’ll treasure our photos forever, and we can’t recommend Emma enough. She’s not just a talented photographer—she’s someone who genuinely cares about her couples and goes above and beyond to make sure they feel their best.

If I hadn't just married my husband, I would marry Emma! She did an unbelievable job for both our engagement shoot & wedding. I don't know how she did it, but all the lightning is ...
perfect, everyone (including tiny children) are captured lovingly, the focus of each picture is stunning - how she was able to capture ever glimmer of my engagement ring, I will never understand. Her documentary style allowed the real love and joy from the day to shine through so spectacularly and we truly cant thank her enough. Not only is the output of the photography everything we could dream of, but Emma is amazing to work with - making everyone feel so comfortable and truly understanding what her couples are looking for. We got so many compliments on how organized and kind Emma was from all our guests. If you need a photographer for literally anything, you cant find anyone better than Emma. WE LOVE YOU, EMMA!!!!

ntire process – both in the planning stages and on the big day – helped us feel completely relaxed and taken care of.
What really sets Emma apart is her genuine passion for what she does and her commitment to making your wedding day uniquely yours. She took the time to really understand us and our vision for the day. One of our favorite things about her was how genuinely excited she’d get after capturing a picture we had discussed during our planning. Her excitement was contagious, and it made the experience even more fun and memorable.
Emma also helped set the tone throughout the day. She kept us grounded— reminding us to take a breath and soak it all in. I’ll never forget when she asked what song reminded us of our relationship, then played it during our first look—such a simple yet meaningful moment that made us feel even more connected.
Simply put—Emma is amazing, and we wholeheartedly recommend her to everyone. She was, without a doubt, the best decision we made for our wedding!
We worked with Emma for our engagement photoshoot and wedding day and cannot recommend her enough!
She did an incredible job directing us into the best poses for all of our shots...
while also making things feel natural. Her bubbly personality and enthusiasm throughout the entire day was infectious. She stayed cool, calm and collected throughout the entire day even as certain things threw off plans a bit (e.g. horrendous traffic). We were especially impressed getting all the candid shots back in our first look gallery - I remember these moments through my eyes, and was totally unaware of her capturing many of them at the same time through her lens. Our family members all raved about their experience with her as well, before they even saw any of the beautiful photos.
We had full trust in Emma heading into our session, but she still surpassed all expectations. She is the ultimate hype woman that you need in your corner on your wedding day!

onfident and relaxed on what could have been a stressful day. Our wedding album is the perfect mix of candid and posed pictures. Emma beautifully captured the love we felt on the day and focused on the relationships that made the day so special. One of our favorite parts of the day was the 20 minutes of couple's portraits we did between our ceremony and reception. After saying "We do", it was nice to get 20 minutes to focus on us as a new married couple. Emma and her second photographer Hanako made us feel comfortable and relaxed and it was fun to have that special time together. 10/10 we would recommend Emma to ANYONE looking for a wedding or engagement photographer.

dditional resources she provides during the engagement process was beyond helpful. She was never a vendor I had to manage, rather she was a helping hand who elevated stress and preemptively answered questions. On the actual day she was the MVP. We just followed her lead and got the most amazing shots! I cannot emphasize the quality of her work enough, we are still getting compliments over a year later on our engagement photos and the preview for our wedding album was STUNNING. We appreciate you Emma!

As for the photos themselves, they were stunning. Emma truly went above and beyond when capturing our day, and we are so grateful we chose her as our photographer
Booking Emma was the best decision we could’ve made! She was so kind and genuinely fun to be around, with the perfect mixture of helping pose us but also capturing amazing candids....
We had a fusion wedding, with a complicated 2 ceremony day and she managed everything wonderfully within our timeline from big family photos to sunset portraits. The sneak peak photos the day after the wedding were the best bonus surprise, we were expecting only a few but she had some from every part of the day. Everyone is obsessed with the pictures, we couldn’t recommend Emma more!!

comfortable and at ease. Her bubbly and kind energy helped to relax us on our big day. She went above beyond, she kept us on time and helped with little things she didn't even need to. She is a true artist and SO talented. We've only seen our sneak peek so far (we got over 50 photos just 24 hrs after our wedding, amazing to have after the post-wedding blues!), but we couldn't be happier. Our photos are absolutely beautiful. We still smile and tear up again when we look at them. She took into consideration our vibe/style as a couple and tailored poses and shots to that. Our family raved about their interactions with her, as did our bridal party. Booking Emma will be one of the best choices you can make for your day!

l to be around. She's SO communicative and prepared- she came with clear umbrellas at the slightest chance of rain, she checked my bouquet for loose pollen to make sure it didn't get on my dress. Not to mention, HER PHOTOS. My guests cannot stop gushing over them- she is so wildly talented and the ultimate photographer. I will hire her for any and all professional photos I need in my future. She is 1000000% worth the investment and more. Cannot recommend her enough

egin, her incredibly detail-oriented planning process ensures all questions are answered before the big day and that every detail is perfect and captured exactly as you want. We did not have a wedding planner, but Emma truly stepped into this role the day of. In addition to capturing every moment, she is truly understands all things wedding- from the easiest way to hold your train to the little tricks of how to keep your wedding dress straps up all night long, Emma has it all down. When you hire Emma, you are hiring much more than just a photographer. Emma can truly do it all. Our goal for the night of our wedding was to spend as much time with our guests as possible while getting photos to "tell the story" of the entire evening. Emma did fantastic to make this dream come to life. In addition, Emma is the definition of efficient. We wanted some posed family-style portraits. Again, with the goal of partying as much as possible, we wanted this section to go quickly. We had about 30 people involved in family photos, not an easy bunch to wrangle, and the portraits were finished in less than 10 minutes. Truly impressive. Emma is worth every penny! You will not regret choosing Emma.
We would HIGHLY recommend Emma for your photography needs! From our engagement photos to our wedding day, Emma took the time to get to know us and capture every moment in such a me...
aningful way.
Everything felt so natural and we didn't feel like we were ever being pulled to the side or having to do rigid, common posed photos. It felt like we were able to enjoy our celebration and had someone there to capture the moments. She made us feel very comfortable and relaxed from the very start. From playing music that perfectly fit the mood throughout the day to having tissues ready to go at any given moment, she was prepared and so helpful. We really appreciated the variety of ways that she checked in with us the day of to make sure that everything was running smoothly and everything that we wanted captured was captured.
We were also very impressed with her organization and creating a realistic timeline. She had such great suggestions throughout wedding planning as well! We had a gap of time that we wanted to enjoy with our bridal party and weren't sure what exactly to do, but she was happy to brainstorm with us and ultimately helped create a plan so we could go mini-golfing with our bridal party! It was such a fun and memorable part of the day and we were so grateful to enjoy a fun experience like that on our wedding day!
We have been so pleased with our entire experience with Emma as our photographer and have been so impressed with her creative touch, positive energy, organization, and professionalism! You will be very happy with not only your photos, but your entire experience with Emma Petersen Photography!!

s professional, organized, and extremely talented. She makes sure every detail is covered and communicated well throughout the whole process - there was never a moment where we were even questioning what was next. She is just such a joy to work with and we really look forward to another excuse to work with her! Emma makes sure to capture the shots your parents and family will want, but also prioritizes capturing moments that really show who you are as a couple. When we look at the pictures, we're immediately taken back to the moment she captured because she does a great job of capturing the feeling as well. She is supportive and will be there to help with anything you need, but also fades into the background as necessary so you're never feeling "on display". We really loved working with Emma and would absolutely recommend her for any occasion.

Emma was both our engagement and wedding photographer and while this wound up being the hardest vendor search, once we found Emma, we knew.
Yes, her work is undeniable but when you hire Emma you get more than beautiful photos to last a lifetime. You’re hiring your hype woman. Your therapist. Your pre-reception DJ. Your confidante. Your friend. Emma is a chameleon. Whatever you need her to be, she seamlessly morphs into, even without you asking or even realizing it yourself.
After our first meeting with Emma I told my husband that she’s “golden retriever energy” and I 1000% stand by that statement. She was the last photographer we spoke with before we selected. We simply knew it had to be Emma once Emma became an option. Just like I couldn’t imagine my wedding without my now husband, I almost equally couldn’t imagine it without Emma. By the time it came for her to leave, I was genuinely sad. Not because I felt like we missed any shots but because her energy was that palpable, I couldn’t picture the celebration without her.
