Gerard, that it was. Much to our outrage, when we stopped in to check on it one day, we were told it was at his "mechanics" somewhere in New York. This was my fiance's grandmothers engagement ring, and aside from it's value, the ring is irreplaceable because of it's family history. When my fiance tried to speak with Gerard about his lack of candor in sending it out of state without our express permission, he shrugged it off and told us "I can't do all of this myself and run the store." Which is odd, because that's what we were under the assumption was happening. Upon getting the ring back, we took it to several other jewelers and were assured that the work was sub-par at best and that the ring was FAR too valuable to ever have been put in the mail. We learned about the process that would and should have been used to fix the broken prong correctly. All the shops agreed that the work was not to the quality that an heirloom piece should be given and quoted at 3 other jewelers at almost half the cost, 2 of which are rated as the best platinum jewelers in New England. We are following up this unfortunate experience by taking this business and it's owner to small claims court. We will never let him work on the ring, but hope to recover at least some of the cost so we can have it repaired properly. Don't give this shop your business, there are amazing jewelers in Portland, but this is not one of them!
