I had a very disappointing and stressful experience with this wedding gown cleaner and would not recommend them to any bride.
I dropped off my wedding gown prior to my destination...
wedding in Mexico for a cleaning and press. My dress was a sample gown purchased off the rack, and the bridal boutique provided a certificate for a free cleaning. Since the boutique recommended this business and they advertise themselves as “wedding gown specialists,” I didn’t hesitate to trust them with my dress.
The cleaning and pressing took two weeks, and I picked up my gown a week before leaving for Mexico. At pickup, the clerk unzipped the garment bag, asked me if it was my dress, and then zipped it back up. I was not asked to inspect it—only to identify it.
I went directly to my seamstress for a final alteration, and that’s when the issues became apparent. The beading on the straps now had loose threads hanging, and my seamstress immediately expressed concern. She stated the straps had been perfect before going to the cleaners, but now gemstones were loose and missing. She also said the dress appeared to have been tumbled, as there were new snags that had not been there previously.
When I got home and inspected my gown more closely, I was devastated. Parts of the straps were clearly melted, gems were missing or loose, and my once-perfect dress was damaged.
I immediately called the cleaners on Saturday morning (three days before leaving for Mexico) and was told to bring the dress in. I drove from Byron Center to Holland again to show them the damage. During that visit, the sales representative confirmed that dresses are placed in garment bags and tumbled as part of their cleaning process. She also acknowledged that the straps felt melted compared to my original fabric swatch and suggested it may have been caused by heat from the iron.
On Monday morning, I received a text from the owner stating they were not responsible for the damage because I had “inspected” the dress before leaving the store—which is simply not true. I was never asked to inspect it. Why would I think to closely examine delicate straps if the dress was only supposed to be cleaned and pressed?
The owner offered to replace the straps, but the materials available on such short notice were clearly inferior to the original. With less than 24 hours before flying to Mexico, this was not an acceptable solution. I ultimately asked for a refund of the $90 pressing fee, especially since the damage cost me well over $200 in additional fabric, seamstress work, and travel expenses. That request was refused.
The stress, time, and emotional toll this caused right before my wedding were overwhelming. I strongly advise brides to go elsewhere for wedding dress services. This experience was not worth the “free” cleaning that came with my gown.
I LOVED my experience with Great Lakes Clothing Care & Wedding Gown Specialists! Highly recommend for anyone seeking wedding or other clothing care. I had my wedding dress colored ...
a pale icy blue, as white didn't resonate with me, and the results were just as I'd hoped. They even shipped it to and from Washington, as I was out of state when planning for the big day. I believe any non-traditional, or traditional bride would find their services expedient and high quality. Special shout out to Tami Parks for her amazing customer service and guidance through the process- THANK YOU!
Multiple problems with seamstress. Ruined wedding dress with compounding errors.
Heard they were the best but you should get a second opinion and good luck.
Tami was so easy to work with, even through a global pandemic! And my dress looks amazing!!
Tami and her team were super easy to work with. I love how they're local to the community, and I'm happy to support small businesses. They also did a fantastic job hemming, creatin...
g a beautiful bustle, and pressing my dress. It looked stunning and made me feel amazing on my wedding day!
They added lace sleeves to my strapless wedding dress and it was so perfect! Sherri was great about working with me for fittings and had it done in plenty of time. I was so incredi...
bly happy with how it turned out!
Sherry Hettinga altered my mother-of-the-bride dress. Great experience!
My experience with Great Lakes Wedding Gown Specialists has truly been horrific.
They messed up a bridesmaid dress for me this summer, then "fixed it" (Still very tight, and so lo...
ng I ripped it walking around at the reception)
Worst of all, they messed up my wedding gown itself on 2 occasions, then refused to let me come back into the shop to fix it for a third appointment. Both occasions asking me if I had gained weight, etc, making me feel extremely guilty.
I had to go to another alterations specialist who was shocked that they took my money for such poor craftsmanship. (Big thank you to the other shop for saving my wedding day)
Not once did they apologize for a single mistake.
Ladies, do not give your wedding gown to these women! So heartless that they refused to even let me come back and get the gown fixed.
Waste of money, time, and a lot of emotional drama.
I brought my dress, my veil, and my 2 MOHs dresses to Tami 2 days before my rehearsal, and she did a fantastic job pressing them for the big day. I had brought my dress through mul...
tiple states driving to our destination, so it was quite wrinkled, and Tami made it beautifully smooth which was crucial for my fitted Mikado dress.
I went in for just a bustle and ended up needing to have my dress shortened and they were able to fit me in on pretty short notice. On our wedding day, I realized they forgot to he...
m up the lining on the inside. When I went in afterward, they refunded me some of the cost no questions asked and hemmed up the lining anyway for no charge before having it cleaned and preserved. They were extremely apologetic and sincere!
I saw wonderful (hand-selected) reviewers on their website, so I drove out to the lakeshore several times to have my dress and shoes cleaned and preserved. I have searched high and...
low for the beautiful satin sash that was definitely with my dress in the original garment bag, but it was lost somewhere in the process without so much as an “I’m sorry”.
They got rid of the original garment bag and said that they used special bags for preservation (okay, fine), but no efforts were made to rectify the situation - discount, apology, efforts to search, offers to clean my shoes at a discount, etc. They just assured me that it wasn’t their fault and that they’d “let me know” if the sash ever turned up. It was from BHLDN, perfectly matched the satin layer under the lace on my dress, and wasn’t cheap or easy to come by that color as it seems to be in limited supply.
Additionally, I brought my shoes to them to be cleaned and they were still dirty (actual dirt and blades of grass were in them) when I picked them up. Again, no apology, just instance that they’d done their job when I asked if they’d even been cleaned. When I asked about the cleaning process, the answer was vague.
I would definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone who wants their precious and expensive wedding garments to be taken care of properly.
Horrible service from the moment we walked in the door. The seamstress wanted to take out the low back of my dress instead of tailoring the sides. When we questioned it, we were ye...
lled at and told not to question her sowing experience. The entire alterations would have been $450-$500, and with only one seamstress they were very busy so the dress would be available about a week before the wedding.
Decided to take my gown elsewhere and had an amazing experience at Miller Bridal in Fremont, and saved at least $150! So glad I followed my instincts. You only get one wedding dress! Weddings should be a happy experience.
Tami did a fantastic job with my dress. I had it preserved and am very happy with it.
