The WORST venue ever. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS HALL. They made up the story that there were damages the day of my event when we literally walked around with the guy from the v...
enue before we left to ensure nothing was damaged or in the wrong place. He confirmed that everything was good and we would the secure deposit a month later. He also said that they will have another event the next day in the morning, so they didn’t have to do any cleaning because we did it so well.
They have no proof of the support damages, but they don’t want to give me my secure deposit.
They will never contact me if it wasn’t because my event was 2 months ago and I haven’t heard from them. I gave them time for them to contact me and give me my secure deposit but they did not.
Moreover, they said that it was because the woman who did my contract quit, which is not my problem: I signed the contract with Greenbank Mill, not with their employees.
I liked the mill up until the day of our wedding. The ceremony was outside and beautiful. We had the reception indoors and even though it was a little small I still really liked it...
and so did the groom. That is until it became 100 degrees in the building and everyone was sweating. To cool off, we were in between outdoors and indoors and propped the door open at one point. All of which was a problem to the mill keeper that was on call. Which I got yelled at about countless times. The air was "on" (hello, sure didn't feel like it) and alcoholic beverages are no longer permitted outside there, which was fine whatever I could deal with that. But god forbid someone stepped outside with a drink, the mill keeper would run over to let me know. I'm the bride this is supposed to be my special day and I felt very frustrated/stressed and not special. There was one ashtray outside and they kept moving it for whatever reason, to keep the deposit I'm sure, which they did no surprise there. We had only two children at the wedding under the age of ten, and I got told that it was a problem they were playing tag outside. No running, apparently. It got to the point in the night where we had an hour left before it was time for us to leave. Which I was well aware but still had to be interrupted by rude staff on the dance floor to be told this. We bought an extra hour for clean up to play it safe but didn't even use half of it and we did not receive that money back nor the deposit because they had to "clean" up after us. Even though us, our families, and the caterers cleaned everything out of the building and packed it up before we left. Overall, the grounds are great but the staff is extremely rude. We didn't even get a "congratulations" from them, just a ton of nastiness. I would not recommend for reception as others have said. Which is ashame it's really a beautiful building.
I am writing in response to Christine B's 9/17/16 "review" of our site. (Full disclosure: I chair the board of directors at Greenbank Mill and Philips Farm, a living-history museum...
in Wilmington, Delaware.)
It is inappropriate for us to engage in "she said/we said" in a review forum. Character assassination disguised as a review is also, I believe, inappropriate.
If you are considering Greenbank as the venue for your shower, wedding, or reception to visit our site, meet our site director yourself, and decide for yourself if we are the perfect setting for your event.
Greenbank is cognizant that every event, whether it is a joyous celebration of life's milestones or a solemn remembrance of a loved one's passing, is important to those who choose our site.

Note: It's hard to put a star rating to this, since I'd give 5 stars for the photo ops you will get by using the mill but probably only one star to the organization that oversees t...

If you decide on Greenbank, I would suggest only for your ceremony in the grove ($50 additional cost). It's a beautiful setting and wedding photos will be stunning, but it is NOT reception friendly for those who are planning and setting up for guests.
Our dinner was outside, under a tent, with dancing, appetizers, cake and bar inside the banquet hall. Throughout the process of meeting vendors on site, there were many conflicting "do's and don'ts" depending on which mill rep showed up. Tent vendor was told (we were there to hear this) the tent could stay up until the next morning by one rep but at 10:30 a.m. on day of wedding the mill supervisor called to tell me that couldn't happen, due to a liability issue. However; they decided to "compromise" by charging $ 50.00 per hour for each additional hour the tent stayed up. (How that removes any liability issue is beyond me). All this drama between mill and vendor is happening 5 hours before the wedding is to start !!!!
The mill sitter for the wedding told our violinist she couldn't play outside; no amped music allowed outdoors - for God's Sake, it was a VIOLIN ! And she told our DJ she couldn't have an amp outside to do announcing when we all entered the tent for dinner at 5:30 p.m. due to noise concerns. The mill sitter relented on both of those issues after the bridal party had a chat with her. Really, a bride has to worry about that on wedding day?
Decorating inside the banquet hall is a problem because they only allow paper masking tape. However, the mill rep at the rehearsal said if he turned his back, he wouldn't see if we decided to use push pins to hang curtains. Again, everything depends on the mill sitter d'jour.
In the end, they decided not to charge us the extra $ 50 per hour; they kept only the $ 100.00 security deposit. They have banned the tent rental vendor from the property (which is fine, as he said he would NEVER go there for an event again), and I don't know that our caterer would be too willing to go there again either.
Everything boils down to your being at the mercy of whoever thinks they are in charge of the mill at the time. I wouldn't take that chance.
Greenbank Mill was a fantastic location for our 100 guest wedding. They have a small banquet hall that holds about 100 people seated(no dance floor). We had our ceremony outside in...
the grove of trees, Wilmington Western Railroad is passes thru the site and we didn't even plan it but as soon as we were done the ceremony and walking back down the aisle, the old charming steam train came by and blew it's whistle!
