Working with Sarah and Katrina at Guglhupf was incredible. We reached out a few months ahead of our wedding and scheduled a tasting for a few different flavors. The tasting was $15, which was then applied to the cost of an ordered cake. They gave us lots of information and showed us example pictures of cakes to be sure that we were on the same page about the design. Ultimately we ordered a 3-tier cake with chocolate hazelnut filling to feed ~80 people for under $500 (includes delivery). We dropped off some flowers the day before for them to include in the decoration. The cake was delivered on time and was so beautiful. It tasted amazing (not always the case for wedding cakes), and I'm thoroughly enjoying the leftovers 😋 We would highly recommend Guglhupf for your wedding cake needs.
Working with Katie and the bakers at Guglhupf was a wonderful process. They made us feel welcome the moment we called and set up our tasting. We tried four different flavors and ended up picking two different flavors for our three tier cake, as we just couldn’t agree which was better. Our guests couldn’t agree either, as every person though the cake was both beautiful and delicious - especially the light and fluffy german-style icing!
Guglhupf was amazing to work with, as they handled our allergy requests with both ease and seriousness, and once we had worked out our cake design and flavors everything else was a breeze. They handled the delivery of the cake, provided us with boxes to take some home, and included a lovely stand for free (only had to place a deposit).
Our cake was loved by everyone who tried it, and we can’t recommend Guglhupf highly enough from both in working with the friendly staff and the delicious cake at our wedding.
We used Guglhuf for our wedding cake. The process was easy and convenient. We got to taste a number of cake flavors and icing combinations. In terms of day of coordination we couldn’t have asked for more, it was easy and we didn’t need to think about it, the cake arrived and was set up without any issues. The cake decoration was far exceeding our expectations. We sent them a picture of an impressionist rose painting done with icing and they imitated it perfectly. The cake tasted amazing, and we look forward to ordering an anniversary cake to celebrate in a year.
It breaks my heart to write this, as a local native I have many fond memories of Guglhupf's bakery and they run a great business in many ways. Unfortunately, as a prospective bride I was treated in a rude, dismissive and sarcastic manner. I was emailing back and forth for a month trying to set up a tasting. I offered business hours daytime slots, evening slots, and weekend slots and nothing seemed to work. To be honest I had given up when a month into the process I got an email from another person altogether who told me they never book wedding cakes on New Year's Eve since their other business overwhelms them on that day. This is a perfectly acceptable policy, but since the first email stated my wedding date, I should not have been allowed to communicate back and forth for an entire month when they always planned to turn down my business. I sent an email back politely saying that I understood but as a training point they should probably mention not doing my wedding date as a policy matter much earlier in the conversation, and received an extremely sarcastic response. While I am (for obvious reasons) not booking with them, I am extremely disappointed in the very poor customer service of a company I grew up loving. As a bride, I would stay away from a company with no flexibility or respect for your time.
Guglhuph was very easy to work with and provided us with a beautiful and delicious wedding cake.
Ordering any cake through Guglhupf is straightforward and wedding cakes are no exception. There is no order minimum, which was convenient for us because we did not have a traditional wedding cake, but served Scratch Bakery pies in addition to cake. Guglhupf's specialty is mousse cakes, which can be tasted any day of the week. We used the tasting for cakey cakes. And it was fantastic.
The pastry chef, Antonia, was helpful in advising on cake flavors, sizes, presentation, and logistics of delivery...with my actual wedding and budget in mind. I can't speak to the quality of cake decoration, since our cake had no special decor. Most important though, the 2 cakes we were ordered were moist, fresh (fresh whole raspberries in one of them), and tasty!
We wanted something a little different, and something refreshing for a summer wedding. The Guglhupf makes mousse cakes that are amazing. They can do a two-layer mousse cake, but can make up with lots of individual cakes. We were able to order lots of different flavors of cakes, and many of our guests enjoyed them so much, that they requested seconds!
Guglhupf is a well known and highly rated bakery and cafe in Durham. Not many people know that they make wedding cakes, or that their wedding cakes cost about half as much as other bakeries of the same quality.;Guglhupf makes only mousse-based wedding cakes, not the traditional white cake with icing. They are also limited in the size and shape of cakes they can provide. We were fine with this. We had a two-layer lemon mousse cake with another two, chocolate mousse and chocolate hazelnut, on the side, more than enough for all of our guests. The cakes were beautiful and delicious. They just didn't look like typical wedding cakes.
