I hired Gwen after seeing her portfolio and work history. I paid for makeup applications on my three ladies as well as myself and coverage of a large tattoo. She scheduled the appl...
ication from 11 AM to 5 PM, but she managed to finish all of the work by 4 PM with the help of an assistant. I found her and her assistant fun to converse with and they helped alleviate any nerves I was having. I hadn't had a trial for the makeup look, assuming she could manage a simple vintage winged liner and red lip look without much effort. Not only did she manage that, but I looked gorgeous and all of my ladies looked astounding. It was a wonderful experience for me and my ladies.

My wedding was in May 2012. We had my makeup trial in the week leading up to the wedding and this is when I paid Gwen by check for the total amount - including the rest of the trial fee as well as the entire fee for the day of the wedding. Since the wedding was coming up so quick I didn’t even realize that I wasn’t asked to sign any kind of contract - just the invoice for the trial. It took almost the entire time of the trial for her to come up with a look that I was actually content with, and even then I wasn’t blown away by her work.
The last thing we established the night of the trial was her arrival time for the day of the wedding. Fortunately my MOH and my coordinator were both with me so we quickly discussed and told her that she needed to be there at 3:30. We had very limited time before the ceremony and based on her agreed arrival time of 3:30, we planned a tight pre-ceremony schedule, which included hair to immediately follow makeup and then on to pictures of me with the bridesmaids before the 6:30 ceremony.
The day of the wedding, things were going smoothly and I wasn’t stressed, that is until 3:30 rolled around. After about 10 minutes or so of waiting I gave her a call that went straight to voicemail. A couple more phone calls yielded the same result. After about 45 minutes pass I began to realize that I had been stiffed. I barely had any of my own makeup with me so my bridesmaids jumped into action, using their own to get started on my makeup. I was hit with the stress of staring at eyeshadow colors I’d never used before as well as using foundation that didn’t match my complexion.
My MOH managed to make my eyeshadow look better than what Gwen had done in the trial, however, by the time my hair lady arrived (on time), I was still lacking the coverage I usually got from my normal foundation. To prevent us from getting even more off schedule, we began hair immediately.
At 5:30, when my hair was almost complete, Gwen finally arrived - making her a whopping 2 hours late. Instead of immediately setting up, Gwen stood awkwardly off to the side until I was just about done with hair before she started her set-up. By the time I was done with hair I had to spend even more time waiting for her to finish.
The makeup application during the trial had taken a long time so we had originally planned on allowing an hour and 1/2 for the day of the wedding. However, with only one hour before the ceremony, this meant that not only would my makeup application be rushed and cut short, but I would also entirely miss out on my pre-ceremony pictures. And with a shorter-than-average reception, these pre-ceremony pictures had been crucial.
At this point, the only thing I was really lacking was a good makeup foundation. Since I had paid her for an hour and 1/2 of makeup application, specifically to occur at 3:30, and she instead provided me with a 15-20 minute less-than-partial application that occurred at 5:45, I had a hard time believing that she wouldn’t be offering me a full refund. Even my hair lady encouraged me to pursue a full refund, saying that in all of her years of doing weddings she had never seen something like this. But this wasn’t something that I wanted to discuss right before
