Having had a small, intimate elopement we knew that we had to have an amazing photographer and Shelley is exactly that and more! From the moment my husband, Jamie, and I met her she had a fun, yet calming presence, was easy to work with and very responsive (even just that is a gift in what can be the hectic world of wedding planning). She absolutely spare no time or energy when it comes to her preparation and devotion to her clients— she scouted an amazing spot in the mountains of North Carolina for our engagement photos. On the day of, it rained the entire shoot which you might think would have put a damper on the experience. Think again—thanks to Shelley, we not only had an absolute blast but also received absolutely stunning photos despite the fact that there was cloud cover blanketed over the landscape nearly the whole time. We were told countless times by friends and family that we had never seen engagement photos like ours and that they were a true work of art. We have a 30 inch by 40 inch canvas of one of them hanging in our home. During the engagement shoot and again during our wedding, she made us feel totally comfortable and has a unique ability to give just the right amount of the direction so that you feel like you know what to do but don’t end up with photos that look forced or overly posed. She is capable of capturing both the widespread striking, beauty of whatever landscape she has carefully selected but also the up close, intimacy of private moments between two people during some of the most precious days of their lives.

. I pretty much instantly felt comfortable working with her, even though I never got to meet her in person until the actual elopement day. My husband doesn't comment on services very much, but he was so impressed with Shelley's creativity and fearlessness in getting the best shots. She would sometimes be laying on the ground and get completely soaked by the waterfalls, and she would have us stand so close to the edge of a cliff and so close to the waterfalls. My husband got to see a sneak peek of a few shots on her camera, and his mouth literally dropped at how beautiful the photos were. We completely trusted her opinion on the stops we made in Iceland not only because she has been to Iceland before, but also because she just has that creative vision to know what looks good (her website/blog says it all). Another bonus is that she scouts the wedding ceremony area for you beforehand and chose our ceremony site, which we are so grateful for. It was intimate (away from the crowds), peaceful, and beautiful. If you and your partner are looking for someone who loves candid photos, dynamic photos with a lot of movement, and epic landscape photos, Shelley is the best photographer for that. We can't recommend her enough!

for both our engagement photo shoot and wedding. Not only was Josh crazy (i.e. fun!) enough to hike up Grandfather mountain with us in the middle of January, but he suggested camping! At one point he even ran over to a nearby peak to take a picture of our silhouette in front of the setting sun--just one example of going ABOVE and beyond expectations. To say the least, Josh and Shelley are adventurous, creative, easy-going and athletic (which can be important for some of the photo shoots they are willing to do)! We had the pleasure of working with them again about a year later for our big day and we agree that this was the best decision we made for our wedding. The Hartmans make anything and everything look good and they have a creative eye to take unique shots that we will be cherishing forever. Most importantly, they work great as a team--they have a calm energy that was crucial for our wedding day when so many other things were happening. If you're considering the Hartmans as your photographers, no matter the occasion, we recommend it without reservation. You won't regret it.

Shelley and Josh were everything you would expect from professionals (on-time, responsive, organized, and quick turn around times for photos), but they were also such a joy to be around! All of my guests were talking about how fun our photographers were, and we got even more compliments on the pictures themselves!

For the bridal portraits I wanted to take pictures on a cliff, she hiked 1.5 miles up the mountain with me and my sister to get the perfect pictures. She is willing to go to locations nobody will. Both Josh and Shelly shot our wedding and once again all pictures were awesome. Hartman Outdoor Photography will be my photographers for life!

Their understanding of natural lighting was also a key part of our decision to book them - their outdoor shots of our bride and groom portraits are magical. They truly produce timeless keepsakes for each wedding they shoot. They were our favorite vendor we worked with day of, which, given how important of a role they play, was a huge factor in our enjoyment of the day overall. They were present when we needed them, and always available to capture shots when we wanted them, but also inconspicuous when that was important, too! I absolutely love all of our photos and had a hard time narrowing down my favorites from the many, many photos we received! They also were able to edit and send us our photos in less than a month after our wedding, while having several other weddings and engagements to shoot. I think their pictures speak to their talent in capturing the emotion and story of a moment - especially all of the wonderful ones that you experience on a wedding day. From the candid photos to the more traditional ones, their style was exactly what we were looking for. We were so excited to have them be a part of our day. What we didn't expect was how much FUN having Shelley and Josh there would be. I am really happy with our photos from both our engagement session and wedding. They went above and beyond to fill every minute of our wedding day with photos. . The pictures were more than just photographs, each one was a true work of art. It was clear that they captured the unique emotions and energy at each wedding. Josh devoted an afternoon to us for our engagement portrait shoot in Chapel Hill. He made it fun and playful and did a great job incorporating our pup, Penny. Josh and Shelley both traveled to Lake Lure (the wedding venue) a month prior to the wedding to shoot my bridal portraits. Again, the day was so enjoyable, my smiles and laughs captured in the pictures are genuine because I was having such a great time with the two of them! On the wedding day, the two arrived early to scout out all the good spots. Josh stuck with the groomsmen and Shelley with the bridesmaids. The pictures of the wedding party and ceremony are absolutely breathtaking!! Then during the reception, Josh and Shelley were photography ninjas, doing anything and everything for the best shot of the party. Even while photographing in the middle of the dance floor, they fed the energy instead of taking any away. Josh even put down his camera for a second to join in a break dance circle! Josh and Shelley made everything so personal for me and my husband. In fact, after the wedding, the pair packed up their cameras and joined us for the after party! n my wedding planning process. I was so impressed with the caliber of their work and how effortlessly and beautifully they captured their weddings and engagements. I mean...you know you're in love with your wedding photographers when you base your wedding date according to their availability (honestly...I speed-dialed Josh when I found my venue and would only pick a date they could shoot for us). We just had our engagement shoot with Shelley and the pictures were stunning! Having never been professionally photographed, Shelley immediately made us feel at ease and captured the sweetest moments. All the while that she photographers, she sneakily collects details about your story as a couple, incorporating a sweet narrative to the blog post that friends and family can then go see with your engagement shoot. These two are so awesome and we can't wait to work with them for our wedding!

rough group shots. We were really interested in getting a more photojournalistic experience, and he totally delivered - a lot of beautiful candid pictures capturing the moments. So many people who saw our pictures via the weblink he sent us said they felt like they were a part of our day. They also said that it looked like a movie - he captured our day so well. I was so happy with the quality of his work. You will not be disappointed. Josh's photography is really top knotch.

g weddings. We live in Seattle and Josh was great about coordinating everything via phone and email and meeting with us in person a couple of days before the wedding to discuss details. I am usually quite shy in front of the camera but Josh and Shelley put me at ease immediately. We could not have asked for a better photography experience. And of course, the end result was fabulous as well - we love our wedding photos!

o respond and set up an appointment, and were very helpful in helping us figure out what types of photos we wanted. They were an absolute pleasure to work with. Having both photographers was very convenient as one was with the groomsmen & the other was with the bride/bridesmaids prior to the ceremony. The moments they captured came out spectacular. One of the main reasons we chose them, is because they have a natural ability to capture a moment... unposed, unrehearsed. After the ceremony, we had limited time to take photos in the church due to a NYE mass taking place after our wedding. While Josh was taking photos of the family, Shelley was out scouting out some great spots for the two of us. I can't begin to explain how great those photos came out! Rustic barns, open fields with a backdrop of trees right at sunset! My wife and I weren't sure how to "pose," but Josh and Shelley did a great job of just getting us to laugh and enjoy each other, and the pictures came out great. Both of our families cannot stop raving about how good they look! The reception photos were equally as great, as they captured photos of our friends and family having a fun time. Again, they have that uncanny ability to not just take pictures, but capture moments that we will re-live every time we look at our pictures! Best of all, Josh and Shelley were having a fun time doing it! That speaks volumes about the time and effort they put into doing something they love... undoubtedly it results in fantastic art! We got our photos from them extremely fast, we were barely back from the honeymoon when I heard from them that our photos were almost done. The price they charge for the quality of work they do is UNBEATABLE! After seeing our photos, many of our friends are planning on hiring them! We look forward to seeing them again. I was amazed by how they seemed to be able to be everywhere at every point throughout the whole ceremony and reception. When I look back at the pictures now, I can't believe there were only two of them taking pictures the whole night! The quality of photos and service they provide is on a completely different level than anything I have ever experienced. I was floored at how beautiful the unedited photos were that Josh showed me on his camera during the evening. And the edited photos they sent my friends were, in my opinion, better than most photos I have seen in bridal magazines. To top it all off, they were able to return hundreds of beautifully edited photos to my friends within days of their wedding (while they were still on their honeymoon)! Not only were they accommodating, they soon became my favorite part about my wedding (besides the groom, of course). The wedding went perfectly and Josh and Shelley did whatever it took to get amazing shots. My wedding planner even stated he couldn't wait to see my pictures because they were even getting on the floor to get great shots! My family loved them, so they were also gracious guests! Then the problems began. I patiently waited to see at least a seek peek of my photos from the original photographer, since he was the one doing the editing AND the one I had the contract with. A month went by. Still no pics. Now it might seem like I am being impatient but all the while waiting I am watching him post weddings and events that occurred AFTER my wedding. Then, out of the blue, I got a call from Josh saying he and Shelley felt really badly that I hadn't received my pictures and that they were going to go ahead and edit them as well! I was soooo relieved! I got them within a few days and they were INCREDIBLE! They literally and figuratively saved the day! I am soo thankful I stumbled upon such talented and passionate people to share and document one of our most joyful and intimate days.

. They were responsive, friendly, and great to work with. I love our photos and can't stop looking at them - they really capture the love and happiness of the day, along with the absolute fun that we and our guests were having. I didn't even know they were there at times, and during other times they were part of the party. Our guests loved them, too! They provided quality photographs at an excellent value. Also, they gave us about 25 of them very quickly, which was so great. And then the entire batch before we were even home from the honeymoon! You can't beat that - its great to relive your day through their pure artistic talent. I can only imagine this duo will continue to take amazing photos and I will recommend them to anyone and everyone (and alreayd have!).

But once they got the photos back to us, we were blown away! They did such an amazing job of taking beautiful pictures and candids to capture the day as it happened, capturing the love between the bride and groom, and the scenery. As they are outdoor photographers, I would highly recommend them to anyone planning an outdoor wedding in the Raleigh/Triangle/ North Carolina area! If I could give more than 5 stars for value I would!
