Rita is the greatest photographer (and maybe person) in the world. She wants you to have what you want, she wants to make it happen for you, and she wants to capture it beautifully...
. Yes, she is there because you hired her company...but it feels like she WANTS to be there for you too. She weaves herself into the wedding day so perfectly. She is front and center helping to arrange photos and make your friends and family feel comfortable in front of a camera, but then fades into the background when you need to focus on your ceremony, friends, family, and party.
A true professional, and so much care for her craft.

Two things will forever stay with me — your sticking with us when we had to postpone the first date due to Covid and taking a frantic call from me while you were camping to say “yes” that new date will work and giving me a much needed hug when I got I overwhelmed while Beckie was getting ready. Your compassion and understanding in that moment meant the world to me. It steadied me and let me settle down and enjoy the day. You are a very special person and we were very lucky to have you capture Beckie and Chris’ special day.

photographer, who I had chosen because I wasn't local, and he did a good job at my college roommate's wedding. Unfortunately, he had a technical issue that led them to double book, and they couldn't do our wedding. I'm starting with this to say two things: 1) This was a VERY overwhelming situation. We don't live in KC, and we thought we had such a big piece of our day settled. Rita totally took over though, and put us at ease with her style of photography and her personality (more on both below). We immediately felt at ease—more confident, even—that we were going with her. I seriously never looked back.
2) When I did my original Googling/Knotting, Heirloom didn't really register on the first couple pages. However, it should totally be in the top search results for "Kansas City wedding photographer." The fact that it's not is definitely more because Rita is a world-class photographer, not necessarily a marketer. It's easy to get overwhelmed with choices and to use search results and ratings to help you feel more secure, but Heirloom is a super pro company that you should feel 1000% confident engaging with.
So, the actual process. We wanted a photographer with an artist's perspective, who could feel in the moment what they should shoot, and shoot it. We were looking for photos that skewed more towards documentary—I said I wanted to look at the photos and think, "I KNOW that look" or "I can HEAR that person laugh just like that." Secondly, we are pretty low key and took forever to get married partially because weddings can be so canned. Thirdly, we wanted art to hang on our walls. All to say, we didn't want someone that bought a $500 camera and relies on what is cool on Pinterest and like, makes me jump on a bed with my bridesmaids. All of this aligned with Rita's philosophy. She does a few portraits and group shots because she believes you'll want that standard photo for years to come (true), but between her and the second photographer, I'd say 80% of our photos were BRILLIANT candid shots that I will use to teach my children how their great grandparents danced or how their smile (or whatever) is like their aunt. The other 20% are beautiful portraits that I am printing in large scale for my walls.
A nice surprise, and something I didn't think about, was vetting photographers for their personality and how you click with them. I underestimated how intricate a part of the day they are—they watch you get dressed, they witness your most intimate moments together—so it makes sense that they should "fit in" with you and your partner. We are pretty low key and wanted someone we could trust to do their thing and who would take charge but who would help us feel at ease. Rita nailed this. She is very extroverted but also very emotionally intelligent—she can both read and wrangle the room, and she prioritizes the experience of the bride and groom. I can't emphasize this whole part enough. 80% of our delay of a wedding was anxiety around being the center of attention and not wanting to deal with trying to be "those people" who look so glamorous and at ease. Rita was great at making us laugh and fitting her photos to be authentic to us and our style, rather than the other way around.
Boring but important stuff: the pricing was VERY fair, and the deadlines were kept.

was the easiest wedding planning decision ever made. They had my vision in mind and were always on my side throughout the entire process. On my wedding day, they made me feel completely at ease and were able to work their magic throughout the entire day, while accommodating the wedding party, family, and friends. They captured the most beautiful photos, and what I loved most of all were the photos they captured that weren't "planned", those are the photos I will hold onto the most. I cannot thank Rita & Jen enough. As I look back on my beautiful wedding photos, they always being a tear to my eye and I know I wish cherish them for the rest of my life. Love you guys!

I had a very specific look and feel I was going for with our photos and Rita took it above and beyond my expectations. I love the raw retro feel/look of a photo and she made sure to give me the perfect grit in each of our engagement photos. She is absolutely amazing at making you & your partner feel comfortable the entire time which in turn captures the most perfect lifestyle photos. Oh, and her laugh is contagious - so, that helps with a realistic/perfect laugh face for your photos!
Our wedding day was absolutely made the moment Rita showed up! We were lucky to have her partner Jenn as her sidekick that day and man are they the most dynamic duo! I had multiple guests reach out after the wedding and ask who our photographer was because they wanted to recommend her to a friend. riends and family. Yes, the family portraits are important (and Heirloom proved to be a master at "herding the cats" and getting our families organized for some great shots), but we really wanted to capture everyone's true personalities and the attendees enjoying themselves.
Rita and Jen were delights to work with! As you can see from the photos I've attached to this review, they'll get into any position to ensure they're capturing beautiful photos. I have NEVER had a professional photo session, and was anxious about how awkward I would feel in front of the camera. Rita & Jen made the setting so incredibly casual and relaxed, that most of the time they blended into the background...allowing them to capture great candid moments.
We received 100 "first look photos" within 48 hours of our wedding and then the complete package in a timely manner. love taking photos, I love looking at them, I am still that person that makes photo albums and scrapbooks—I had my heart set on capturing all different aspects and parts of the day, both the ones I did and didn’t notice. So choosing a photographer that would be able to balance not only capturing my husband and I looking damn good, but also capture all of our people, the big moments, the quiet moments, and all the little moments in between seemed like a rare find. That’s exactly what these gals are, a RARE find. All day I felt at ease, ecstatic, and so fulfilled because I was able to take everything in. Rita and Jen were far more than just kickass photographers, they took the time to get to know me, my husband, our wedding party, & our family & guests throughout the entire day and into the night, while focusing on getting all the shots we could have wanted. I cannot wait to look back at all the photos while remembering how we chose the best people ever to photograph our day and spend the day celebrating with us. The day of they were helpful, funny, and relaxed but also helped guide all of the bridal party and kept us all on time in a gentle and fun way. I wasn’t stressed at all because everything was totally under control. But the most amazing thing about this photographer is the RESULT - holy moly! We are so in love with our photos. e moment Rita showed up in my bridal prep room (45 min early!!!) I immediately felt more relaxed. She could tell that I needed a second away from all the commotion and whisked me out of the room for a quick breather. I knew when we hired Rita that we got much more than just a WONDEFUL & TALENTED photographer; throughout our wedding day Rita went above and beyond to make everything run smoothly and stress free for us all while taking photos that we will treasure for the rest of our lives. Even in the months before the wedding Rita was quick to respond to my questions and even met me in person to help with the timeline for our big day. ything this past year, from our engagement session, our wedding weekend- rehearsal dinner included- and to cover the birth of our daughter! We loved that we got to know her so well before the big day. Even though we lived out of state, she could meet with us several times. She got to know us as a couple understanding what we wanted for our special day. The communication before the event was amazing! She went out of her way to meet with us, even when she had been working all day completing three even four other shoots that day!
When we started planning, one of the first things we started looked for was a photographer. We searched for a few months, but once we found Rita, we knew instantly that she would be perfect. Rita is one of the most committed photographers that I have ever met. Even when life threw her curveballs, she remained professional and committed. We are blown away!

She goes out of her way to ensure that the day is exactly as you want it covered! She has the ability to corral over fifty people for a family shot. She took us outside the church for better lighting because she knew the quality of the photographs would be higher. She constantly strived to give us the highest quality of work. Her fun loving nature helped us relax. Between Rita and Josh, they captured every moment with a natural ease even with bumpy roads on a trolley, unseasonable warm weather and crowds at Crown Center, and a very distractible bridal couple and bridal party. Her artistic eye enables magical shots of our special day. She captured our whimsical and goofy nature.
Everyone we met with asked who was shooting our wedding, and when we told them it was Rita, their faces lit up. It is not hard to understand why because she is such a joy to work with and ensures she will do everything absolutely possible to get every shot, every angle! She commands the scene maintaining our timeline and our wish list of shots.
We haven't received our full album but know it will be stunning! Rita covered the birth of our daughter and we received the album within a week. Our engagement album was sent with just as much promptness. We cannot wait!

ook before walking down the aisle, so they were working with some time constraints, but they stayed calm and collected and still got every photo I wanted and more! th Rita. She was so on top of having details planned out ahead of time. When we were a week out, my now husband and I both were calling/emailing/texting her simultaneously throughout the same day at times. She never once made us feel like bugging the crap out of her. The day we left together to travel to our destination, she arrived at the airport on time and excited to be there with us! I could not believe how prepared this girl was!! Back ups upon back ups, for lenses, cameras, packing situations, ANYTHING! I really felt like no matter what, she was going to get these pictures. For our ceremony, I knew Rita’s extreme talent would be perfection after utilizing her for our engagement pictures. But I think what I wasn’t even slightly prepared for, was how over the top Rita’s care for us would end of being that day. We decided to travel to have a beach wedding, with just us. We knew that was going to put a lot of the tasks the day of onto ourselves. Had we not had Rita there, I have no clue how we would have gotten it all done. She helped us to remain calm the entire afternoon, while kindly keeping us on time. When it came time to get dressed and do our official “first look”, I had a minor panic attack and ended up unstringing all 24 (or was it more??) cross sections of looping completely out of my corset dress. Rita took on my “Maid of Honor” roll and looped every last one together, went under my hot dress (yes we got to be real close friends) pinning this and that. All with a smile and an eager attitude to be there for me. Who else can say their wedding photographer would ever even offer to do that?? Let alone, ACTUALLY do it?! Unheard of, I can assure you of that. Our ceremony was magic, and while we had to meet several other new strangers who were our vendors for the hour, it was comforting to now have Rita on our side as an comrade. She turned into our planner, when we needed someone to take the lead. When the ceremony was over, she was continually on the look out for us, asking if we needed more tissues, more champagne, some time alone to soak it all in. We ended our ceremony by getting in the ocean and played around. Some photographers would have refused to get in the water themselves, but Rita was so thrilled to be apart of the fun! She jumped right in, & soaked her entire outfit on our behalf. After the ceremony, we had a a very quickly approaching dinner reservation and the hotel transport staff was rude and unwilling to work with us. Rita stood up for us, tried to help with all of our evening plans. I swear, half of our entire wedding night dinner, all my husband and I did was talk about how amazing Rita was and how everything went so smoothly because SHE was there. I could go on and on about how amazing of a person Rita has been to us, there truly are not enough words of gratitude and thanks to send to her. Im hoping my review can act as a testament to her character, her charisma and her passion for not only photography, but for people in general. I can assure you, going with any other company would have been a horrible mistake. It takes not only top notch talent, but kindness and consideration to get through something like this. Rita truly is the whole package!!"

From our first get together at Starbucks to laughing in the freezing cold and wandering around Westside, my fiancé and I knew we wanted to have Jen as a part of our big day!
She offered great outfit and location advice, which calmed many nerves and answered many questions before our engagement shoot. By the time it rolled around, we felt well prepared and positively giddy with excitement!
Jen celebrated our love with us, and we felt like we were on a mini-date, and able to be ourselves and very natural. Jen identified and captured our favorite parts of being a couple!

From our first meeting, to engagement photos, to our wedding day I have always been confident and excited about Heirloom's role in our Best Day Ever. Rita and Jen are a dream team. They work efficiently and make ordinary moments memorable by capturing emotion and harnessing natural light. It is certainly more than the click of a camera - a lot of work goes into the details of photos; emotions are high, weather is unpredictable, and surprises pop up. These two not only take beautiful pictures, but they make you feel at ease and comfortable. And they make it look effortless.
They are more than photographers too. After a mild dress crisis arose, Rita literally saved the day and sewed my wedding dress! She was calm and cool about the whole thing. Our first look was fun and family portraits were a breeze. The best part is that it was easy - like hanging with your closest friends who also happen to be kick ass photographers. In fact, they exceeded my expectations and I can honestly say I have never met someone who does it better than they do. Not only are they excellent photographers, but they are excellent people. Throughout my wedding day, they made me laugh (a lot), helped me any way they could, and were always so kind. I feel truly blessed that they were there to capture our wedding day. Tyler and I always said that we wanted our photos to tell our wedding story since they're the only things we will have left to look back on to remember the day. I HATE getting my picture taken and she made it seem so natural. I didnt even care that we were in a busy park. She helped keep our focus on each other, and our puppies. I never once felt super awkward or posed or that she had anyone on her mind but our little family. You can tell she LOVES what she does, and I feel like that truly comes across in her artwork. Jen and Rita truly delivered on providing us with the high quality photographs that we hoped for but they did so much more than their initial duties. They took the time to photograph some of our favorite couples and families; I know that they will cherish these photos and we will love having them, too. At one point, my sister wanted a picture of her and her boyfriend. Rita took some pictures on her iPhone so they wouldn’t have to take a selfie and even took some on her equipment. That was just one example of how they went above and beyond.

Rita was able to catch moments between Ryan and I, captured how we interacted, and was able to express through a picture how much we love each other. During the wedding, my guests felt the same way. My family commented about how she seemed like she was part of the family. She directed people to different sides before a moment would occur, but then she would stand back and let it happen. I was so impressed with the emotion she was able to catch. Rita goes above and beyond with everything. She gave me a pep talk right before the ceremony, made sure I had a beer in the receiving line, and got us anything else we could ever need. I had so many comments from guests about my "awesome photographer"! I even had guests tell me she offered to give them a ride home!

I worked first with Rita, who literally had to make special arrangements so that Heirloom could shoot my wedding. I was on an extremely tight deadline, and despite being the worst bride ever (who waits weeks before the wedding to book the photographer?!), Rita had me laughing within moments of our initial phone conversation and assured me all would be well. Then I Skyped with Jen, who was our photographer for the wedding. She is cute as a button (and has some awesome life stories; just ask her!) and is also INSANELY, EXCEPTIONALLY good at her job. Not only were the pictures phenomenal, Jen made me feel like I had another friend at the wedding. At one point before the ceremony, I was nearing a meltdown, which Jen saw coming and gracefully steered the social situation to calmer territory by negotiating how we would take photos--it was masterful!
I had asked Jen to try to shoot as much raw emotion as possible--for better or worse!--and the photos she returned were so much more than I could have ever hoped for. A wealth of human emotion is captured in these photos; everything from happiness to sadness, from joy to disappointment, from silliness to seriousness...now I understand why Rita and Jen's company is called "Heirloom": I can't wait to pass these down to my children and their children, or to reminisce about my wedding day with my husband, who will always be as handsome to me as he was on this day that Jen photographed.
