I had really high hopes for Herbert based on his experience. One of the main reasons I chose him was because I specifically wanted a real DJ, not just someone who primarily DJs wed...dings. Seeing that he had club experience made me excited, and I thought that background would translate into an amazing reception.
The week of the wedding, we had a 30-minute call to go over every detail. I also spent a lot of time creating an extensive music list organized by categories (EDM throwbacks, EDM, Spanish music, K-pop, etc.) along with specific artists and songs. For the ceremony, I even labeled every entrance individually (groom, flower boy/girl, bridal party, bride, etc.) with the exact song that should be played for each moment.
Unfortunately, the ceremony music did not go as planned. The song I was supposed to walk down the aisle to was accidentally played multiple times before my actual entrance, despite everything being clearly organized beforehand.
Before the wedding, I also shared my vision for the music throughout the night. I wanted a good mix of genres at different points, but Herbert felt cocktail hour should stay more relaxed and save the higher-energy music for later. Since I had never planned a wedding before, I trusted his professional judgment.
Cocktail hour was enjoyable from what I was able to hear, although I was busy greeting guests for most of it. By the reception, however, I felt like the music didn’t reflect what we had discussed. Toward the end of the night, there was a heavy focus on throwback songs, but many of the Spanish songs and artists I specifically requested—like Bad Bunny and Rauw Alejandro—were never played. When I asked about certain songs during the reception, I was told they weren’t available, even though I had provided the song titles and artists in advance.
To be fair, not everything was within his control. The reception volume was lower than we would have liked, but that was an issue with the venue’s sound system rather than Herbert.
Overall, the experience was okay, but it didn’t live up to the expectations I had going in. I put a lot of effort into communicating my music preferences because I wanted the soundtrack of our wedding to feel personal to us. I left feeling disappointed that so many of those requests weren’t reflected throughout the night. I truly wish our experience had matched the many positive reviews I had read beforehand.
