We got married at Hillside Boutique Hotel in March 2026. We originally booked in February 2025 with Penny, and a few months into planning Rebecca took over.
Throughout the plannin...
g process, communication was inconsistent. Emails and texts would often go unanswered for weeks, which made it difficult to stay organized and confident in the details of our wedding. We also noticed pricing discrepancies from our original agreement and were told certain things had been missed, which created confusion.
We repeatedly requested a tasting with the chef, but despite some responses, a date was never confirmed. We were told we had to wait on the chef’s schedule, and before we knew it, it was already January and we never had a tasting. We were still assured the food would be “100%.”
Another issue was with the room block. We were initially told a room block would be in place for our guests, but this was never properly set up. Rebecca later mentioned there had been new management and apologized, but by that point, our guests were already having difficulty booking rooms. As a result, several of our out-of-town guests were unable to stay on-site.
We also had issues with our own room assignments. My mom and I were supposed to have side-by-side rooms (101 and 103). When she arrived, she was initially placed in room 300, but after we addressed it, they did move her to room 103 that same night. However, when I arrived, room 101 was no longer available, so I had to stay in a different room elsewhere above her, which was not what had been planned.
Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment of the entire experience. My husband is an executive chef, and many of our guests are chefs, food consultants, doctors, and business owners—so the quality was very noticeable. The food was overcooked (over-grilled proteins, overdone potatoes), portions were minimal (a piece of broccolini), and some guests who were supposed to receive salmon did not receive it at all. My mom even had to return my 85-year-old uncle’s chicken twice because it was too tough to cut.
Now, weeks later, guests continue to tell us how beautiful the venue was and how amazing the wedding felt overall—but almost always follow it with comments about the food. It’s honestly disappointing and a bit embarrassing to say we paid $34 per plate for 104 guests for a meal that did not meet expectations.
No one from the venue addressed or acknowledged the food issues during the event, which was frustrating because we would have appreciated the opportunity to correct things in real time.
We also experienced a 30-minute delay due to rain, which added some stress.
We were later offered a 50% discounted weekend stay along with a $100 dining credit. While we appreciate the gesture, we kindly declined as we did not feel it adequately addressed the concerns.
That said, the venue itself is absolutely beautiful, and our wedding was still a special and memorable day. The setting and atmosphere are the reason for the 3-star rating.
However, the lack of communication, disorganization with accommodations, and especially the food quality are why it cannot be rated higher.
We absolutely loved having our wedding at The Hillside Boutique Hotel in Castroville. The moment we caught a glimpse of the back of the property lined by palm trees - with a view ...
of the hill country, we knew it was the place ! we love the beach and the hill country, so it was the perfect place for us. The staff was more than generous with their time – wanting to fully understand our “vision “for our big day. They totally knocked it out of the park with their service, attitudes, attention to detail and their extraordinary chefs amazing food! Many people at our wedding told us that it was the best food they have ever eaten at a wedding. What’s cool is that we will always be able to go back to Hillside to celebrate anniversaries and reminisce on our beautiful wedding that we have there some things our wedding guest had to say about Hillside were: “everything is so beautiful and the staff was amazing” “ we want to come back and stay at this hotel sometime on our own because it was so amazing”

We loved the Garden Room. It was extremely well decorated for the Holidays.
We loved the cozy environment.
The food was delicious.
Service was amazing. ...
They took care of all of our needs and made sure our food came at all the same time.
Rebecca and her team were extremely helpful and easy to work with.
We will definitely come back.
While we didn’t have our wedding here we stayed at the hotel to get ready and for an evening getaway for my now husband after our wedding just down the road. The hotel was so nice ...
and accommodating with our questions. As an out of town bride from Dallas this hotel was so amazing. We loved the room and the vibe of the area. Would recommend to other guests.
We had our wedding here late March and the hotel legitimately ruined it. When booking we were promised so many things and always assured we were going to be taken care of. However,...
the person we booked with left the hotel a few months later. The new person was at all times condescending to me through email and the one time we met in person so I asked to please deal with a different person just two weeks before my wedding because at this point I had no idea what was happening as this person was out of the office for the week and I was getting no responses to my emails. I was given the managers number and given a new event coordinator and I was assured everything would be taken care of.
The day of the wedding my hotel reservation wasn’t found even though I called the hotel hours before to make sure that reservation was set up. So my wedding was delayed about 20 minutes because they couldn’t find which room was supposed to be ours. We were finally given the suite which we were supposed to stay in for the night however when I went up there the room wasn’t very clean and the sink literally exploded when I tried to wash my hands so we decided to drive back home and come back in the morning to pick up our stuff since we were given late check out which was at 1pm. At 12 we got a call saying they removed our stuff from the room because they needed to clean it. When we told them we had the room until 1pm they said that they didn’t know that. They threw my $1800 wedding dress in a bag with shoes belts and food. This ruined my dress.
During the actual wedding ceremony which took place outside, my dj had to run to multiple people because no one knew how to turn off the music they had at the pool. So I got married while they played 80’s music on top of my ceremony music. Once in the ballroom I was the first person to be served dinner and I immediately told the server this isn’t the right food. We ordered chicken and got brisket instead. The server just shrugged and said I’m sorry. My food was cold so I can’t even imagine how cold my guests’ food was since the last person got served 35 minutes after me. I only saw 3 servers in circulation when I had to pay for 5. We had less people than expected, so it’s possible that they thought 5 servers wouldn’t be needed for the amount of people that showed up but obviously that wasn’t the case because I got the bread to accompany my food about 15 minutes after I was served my plate and I never was given a water or tea refill. One of my guests got a huge glass in their water. They simply removed it and took about 10 minutes to bring him a new water. I also paid for 3 vendor meals and at the end of the night I found out my dj was never offered any food.
When I went to get a drink at the bar the bartender looked like she would rather be anywhere else but there! But I didn’t think much of it until after my tab ran out and no one had told me about it. She just said you’re over your tab do you want me to keep serving? I told her to turn to a cash bar and I got a glass of wine which she charged me $12 for. We only had house wine, domestic beer, and cheap liquor so idk where the $12 drinks were coming from as when I spoke to the event coordinator the drinks were supposed to be $6 max. I asked multiple guest who were all also charged $12 regardless of drink. I don’t know if there was a miscommunication issue or if money was literally being stolen.
I attempted to contact this hotel to host my wedding. My fiancé is a Retired Marine and will have guests coming from out of state. It would be easier to have a venue with rooms.
It...
was days between responses. I asked for a quote to see if the venue would be in my budget (based on photos and reviews- I felt it would be).
Her response to my request for a quote was "Well, what is your budget?"
I found this a bit rude but I still responded and told her we were hoping to stay under $10K for venue/catering. Apparently, this wasn't good enough for them because I've never heard back from anyone.
It's disappointing but if this is how they do business, I'll gladly take mine elsewhere!
UPDATE - I just received a booking proposal from this venue. No apology, no reason for the almost 4 month delay. Just “Here’s your proposal”. Wow! Thanks but NO THANKS!

municate through email as I was on night shift as a nurse) and was quick to appease whatever I would like and managed my millions of questions with humor! He ensured my rehearsal dinner, wedding, and brunch the following Sunday went completely smoothly! He also ensured that he met with my now husband and I at our best convenience for things like touring and food tasting. He also managed to save the day on my wedding by catching a centerpiece that caught on fire and using an arrangement from a table on the outside to make everything look seamless and perfect regardless of a missing centerpiece! I would recommend him to absolutely anyone, you can completely tell he loves his job!

ake our day perfect. The outdoor ceremony was lovely...the view was fantastic! The reception was held in the ballroom and it was so beautiful. Guillermo also handled the catering and the food was really great. He really went out of his way to make us happy! We were given a room for the night and it was awesome. Many of our guests were from out of town and they were given a special rate at the hotel. The entire experience was just perfect. I very highly recommend the Alsatian.
The space in both the Wedding and hall were big enough for both of our large families to dance the night away and having everything so close was ideal. I could not be more please...

d very accommodating for all of our needs. He went out of his way to make sure we got anything we needed. For a reception of about 250, it was a tight fit, but having the outside and inside areas helped tremendously. This is a gorgeous venue and the food is so tasty! If you are looking for a hill country wedding, this is a place to consider! The background of our ceremony photos is gorgeous and the decor inside is rich. I also suggest getting the Bridal Suite. It can fit many people to get ready in and is very modern and cozy!

My husband and I dreamed of having a sit-down, Italian-style dining experience for our reception where the meal would be both the highlight and the entertainment for the evening, n...
ot a band or dance or anything typical. Most of our guests would be coming in from all over the country and many did not know each other, so we wanted a long, leisurely dinner where they would be able to visit, mingle in-between courses and really get to know each other. We were initially concerned that we wouldn't be able to find a caterer that could provide this type of service in the rural area of Texas where we lived, but once we met with Guillermo, we felt confident he could give us what we wanted. We initially met with him to offer a few ideas and sample menus for what we were looking for and once we settled on something that fit our budget and aesthetic, he invited us in for a sample run through of what he would be serving to our 100+ guests....and WOW, did he nail it! More importantly, we felt that he had really listened to what we wanted and understood just how special of a role the meal would play. When "game day" rolled around, Guillermo and his staff gave an outstanding performance (especially when there was a major threat of rain; we saw them quickly prepare for plan B, but fortunately never had to act on it). Our beautiful menu consisted of: (pre-ceremony) a cheese and fruit display while waiters passed several small-hors d'oeuvres and Prosecco; (post-ceremony, dinner) rustic loaves of peasant bread sat on all tables throughout entire meal; gazpacho; mixed field greens with mandarin oranges, toasted pine nuts and chives tossed in a citrus vinaigrette; lobster ravioli in a light tomato vodka sauce; pork tenderloin served with creamy parmesan polenta and roasted asparagus spears; fresh peach gelato; followed by our "wedding cake" -- French vanilla torte laced with limoncello and creme anglaise (provided by another vendor). Thank you, Guillermo, for not only are we still talking about the evening, but so are our guests!
