My husband and I highly recommend Melissa! Melissa did a phenomenal job on our engagement shoot last year and Melissa and her assistant, Pavel, were such a joy to work with on our wedding day. They kept the photo sessions light and fun and made sure we were getting the photos we wanted! We cannot wait to see the final products.
Is there an option for more than five stars?! My husband and I cannot say enough wonderful things about Melissa and her assistant Floyd and are so happy with them as our choice of wedding photographers.
Starting with the planning process, Melissa was very responsive and helpful in answering any questions I had. She went above and beyond when our venue fell through two months before our wedding and was so kind as to provide me a list of alternative venues as possible options for us. She was so thoughtful, and many times reached out seeing if we had found a new location. That’s the thing about Melissa and Floyd; you can tell right away that they are good, kind people that you would want to be your friends. My husband and I didn’t realize that we would spend more time with Melissa and Floyd than we did our own friends and family on our wedding day, and honestly you could not ask for two better people to shadow you for the day. Both Melissa and Floyd made us feel so comfortable helped direct us in a way that felt natural and carefree. We trusted them with their vision, and I know our photos are going to be better because of it.
One look at Melissa’s portfolio and you can see her eye for capturing beauty and making it seem as if it came from a high fashion magazine. So many portfolios I looked at had photos that I dub “background photos when you buy a picture frame”. I wanted our photos to have life and not just take a picture but capture and create a moment. When I found Melissa, I could see the warmth in her photos; it almost felt like the photos were transcending the camera and freezing the moment in time. I cannot wait to see the moments that Melissa and Floyd captured of our special day, and I would encourage and recommend Melissa to anyone for their photography needs. I know our photos are going to be extraordinary thanks to Melissa’s eye!
We couldn't have asked for a better photographer than Melissa! She had a great vision and eye for what we wanted for our wedding photos. She was professional, fun and made us so comfortable. She had great communication throughout the whole process. You would have never known that she had a million wedding this summer because she had such a great devotion to our big day and vision. Make sure to follow her on instagram because she does a great job at posting her editing queue. We met a few times and I gave her shot inspiration I liked and was looking for. She was just a dream to work with honestly. We couldn't be happier.
Melissa was incredible to work with; my husband and I highly recommend her! After sending an initial email inquiry, Melissa and I connected on a phone call, and I appreciated how clear her process was and how well she communicated each step in working together. Melissa addressed all my questions and was helpful in sorting through which elements to include or avoid when putting our wedding details together. All of her communications, timelines, and processes were super clear & communicated in advance. With all the wedding chaos, I was so grateful to be in Melissa's incredibly professional hands!
On our wedding day Melissa and her assistant, Pavel, were a joy to be with! We spent most of the day with them and Melissa provided really helpful direction & was organized, ensuring we got all the shots we wanted & clearly communicated with our guests to make the photography process smooth & simple. We loved working with them on the day of the wedding, and when our photos were ready for us a few weeks later, we were even more sure we'd picked the perfect photographer for us!
The images that she shared with us were incredibly thorough- not a single special moment was missed! Even more than this, the images were GORGEOUS!! I love Melissa's aesthetic style, and you can see her keen eye in the thoughtful composition of our images. She has a great sense of light that makes the images feel both magical and still very natural and true to life. Her artistic direction made the resulting photos something my husband, myself, and our families will cherish for many years to come.
Couples Beware! We had a terrible experience with Melissa and I would never wish any other couple the stress and grief she caused us. Melissa eagerly took 75% of our contract money up front during COVID and promised to follow through on our postponed wedding date (July 2020 > July 2021). After collecting the money in spring 2020, Melissa treated us so poorly, we felt compelled to fire her. (A clever way for her to collect ~$3500 without shooting a wedding.)
We had genuine concerns from the start as we were unhappy with her engagement session photos. She agreed to reshoot them and told us the rate would be discounted, which seemed fair. After I looked back at receipts, I learned she charged the same price for both shoots. We were happier with the second shoot - a big relief. But I don't know many brides that would be excited to work with a photographer who gets it right half the time.
Despite this, we intended to fulfill the contract and hoped to chat more with her in the months leading up to the wedding. But we didn't hear from Melissa like we did our other vendors. Three months before the 2021 wedding day with our headcount and mask mandates still up in the air, my husband reached out to ask about the contract terms and wondering how to part ways. Instead of reaching out with curiosity or concern for a COVID-impacted couple, Melissa coldly replied that there was no grounds for canceling and because we were reaching out a single day shy of the 90-day mark, she would be keeping all the money we'd paid her to date and "best wishes."
Her lack of empathy and inability to provide any sort of customer service confirmed what we suspected all along: she was inexperienced and untrustworthy. COVID-impacted couples continue to deal with so many uncertainties and stress. Melissa only added to ours.
In an effort not to lose all our money, we decided to *retain her services* and, shockingly, she was very unhappy about this. In her icy reply, she attacked us for having held a 2020 micro-wedding in another state (my father was dying) without informing her (why would we?) and was clearly very hostile about having to fulfill the contract.
At that point, we didn't trust her at all and agreed to part with the nearly $3,500 for which we received only one engagement shoot that we hated (the second shoot was paid separately) and we asked Melissa not to contact us again. She did not honor that request.
After I posted a brief, less-detailed, and honest Google review about our experience with Iron+Honey, Melissa sent me a long and emotionally-charged email disputing my experience and demanding I remove the review. It was truly unbelievable to see a vendor who was paid thousands of dollars *not* to shoot a wedding make the choice to harass the bride months later over a Google review. Naturally, her *public reply* on Google is more warm albeit passive aggressive.
This is a vendor who created so much stress, took so much money and most notably: tried to intimidate me into not leaving an honest review. I wonder how many other couples she has bullied out of leaving honest reviews? Or if every 5-star review she's received is even credible? It's hard to know given how hard she is working to block mine.
Every other vendor we worked with was competent, compassionate, kind, and negotiable due to the pandemic. For our 2021 event, we ended up working with a super talented, highly professional photographer who still stays in touch with us. <3
Melissa was referred to us by one of my co-workers who had had her engagement photos done by Melissa. Those photos were so gorgeous and intimate, that I knew that I had to book Iron and Honey for our wedding. After our first meeting with Melissa, I knew it would be a great fit because she is so organized and on top of all of the things to think about, and was completely aligned with what we wanted to get out of the day from our photos – which was the emotion, joy, raw reactions, and beauty of the day.
My favorite part about working with Melissa was how she approached the day. She sent us a comprehensive questionnaire that prompted my husband and I to truly envision and plan out the most important pieces of the day. All of this wedding prep made the day itself so easy and seamless, and we were able to just let Melissa do her thing!
Iron and Honey Photography was the right pick because our photos turned out even better than we had hoped that they would be. Melissa was able to capture all of the beautiful, raw moments from the day, and I feel the emotions all over again whenever I look at the photos. We could not be more thrilled with how the photos turned out, and have received numerous compliments on the final product from our friends and family.
Melissa from Iron + Honey was a dream to work with! We booked Melissa for our October 2020 wedding, which turned into a June 2021 wedding, and we did an engagement session with her beforehand. Melissa was highly responsive, professional, and we appreciated that she was willing to customize a photography package for our small, bridal-party-free wedding. I should start by saying that my husband and I are two people who are pretty uncomfortable being photographed and often dislike photos of ourselves. During our engagement session, Melissa immediately put us at ease and made the hour and a half we spent with her so fun and enjoyable. On our wedding day, Melissa was great about wrangling family members for pictures and making sure to get photos of all the important moments. We just got our wedding photos back and for two people who generally don't enjoy photos of themselves, I can tell you that we honestly love each and every one of them! Melissa captured every moment so beautifully, her real talent is in snapping amazing candids that capture so much emotion. We cannot recommend Iron + Honey highly enough!!
Melissa was really pleasant to work with. She was professional but also fun, and made us feel really comfortable during the 2 hours we were together. The pictures all turn out fantastic as well - she was a master in capturing the perfect lighting!! Would highly recommend.
LOVE! We loved our engagement session with Melissa. She was so easy to work with and made us feel so comfortable. The photos came out amazing! We could not be more happy. Due to covid a lot of changes happened when it came to our wedding. Melissa was totally willing to work with us and was transparent throughout the whole process. We wish we could say the same about other vendors. We are so grateful to have had her as our photographer Highly recommended! :)
Bella and I really enjoyed shooting with Melissa for our engagement session. I'm not terribly comfortable in front of the camera, but Melissa made it easy. She was even willing to climb onto the roof of a building to make some of our favorite shots. We're really happy with how our photos turned out, and would highly recommend you give her a look for your own session!
From the very start, Melissa was incredible to work with. We had a very spontaneous elopement and reached out to her only a day before, and we are forever thankful she said yes. Melissa was really genuine, down-to-earth, professional and felt like a friend we've known for ages. We felt comfortable instantly and were able to both be in our own world and stay connected to Melissa. She has a great eye and instinct, and we had a lot of fun exploring the city with her and getting photographed from the riverside to the middle of the street(!). When we received our photos, we were absolutely thrilled. We both look amazing, and Melissa beautifully captured our moments, emotions and personalities that we relive them every time we look at them. Honestly, everything went so beautifully on our elopement day and having Melissa right there with us to immortalize our moments was just perfect.
You can expect high quality finished results from Melissa, who displays the perfect balance of professionalism and friendliness.
Given the circumstances of 2020, we were so impressed by her flexibility and patience throughout the adversity of planning our wedding. We had to scale down our event, let alone change the date multiple times, and she was so empathetic about everything.
Melissa did an incredible job capturing our memorable day. We have so many amazing photos that we will cherish forever.
Due to COVID, we had to postpone our wedding with friends and family but still wanted to get married on our chosen wedding date this year. At first, we hadn't though of hiring a photographer, but then, because we wouldn't have friends or family there to take photos, decided we should have this special memory in pictures. We reached out to a few Chicago-area photographers whose work we thought fit our style and Melissa was by far the easiest to communicate with and most responsive. This was crucial as we had plenty of other things to worry about for the day of our elopement. We are so glad it worked out because she was a joy to work with, fun, effortless, gave great direction (it was our very first photoshoot together), and needless to say, we LOVE our elopement photos and will cherish that memory forever! We were so happy and proud to be able to share her beautiful pictures with the family and friends who weren't able to be there with us. Thank you, Melissa for making our day extra special!

We found Melissa through The Everygirl, and loved her style immediately. We loved that she emphasized a focus on candid shots and capturing the feeling of the day, instead of posed/stuffy wedding pictures. My favorite part about working with Melissa was her ability to direct and wrangle our large wedding party and family with efficiency with a fun and positive attitude. It was also FREEZING on our wedding day and we only had chosen outdoor locations for the pictures. Melissa was so professional and was conscious of the freezing bridesmaids, so moved along quickly without compromising the quality of the shots. Working with Melissa was a dream--she was efficient yet took enough time to capture incredible candid details.
Melissa was so amazing on our wedding day and on every day leading up to it - from our first phone call to our engagement shoot and up until the big day, we knew that Melissa would be the perfect match for what we were looking for. Melissa was communicative from the very beginning and eager to walk the neighborhood with us and visit our apartment for our engagement shoot - even hanging half of her body out a bedroom window for some perfect balcony shots! Melissa's organic/in-the-moment/documentary-style of shooting truly captured all of the meaningful and emotional aspects of our wedding day, just like we had hoped. She was hands-on and hands-off at all of the right moments, eliminating a lot of the stress and pressure that picture-taking can sometimes bring and instead allowing myself, my husband, and all of our wedding party to feel relaxed and truly "in the moment" throughout the whole day. It was exactly how we wanted to remember our wedding day and our photos were plentiful and turned out absolutely amazing. You can really *feel* the pictures and put yourself back in that moment in time, which is something that we appreciate so deeply. Thank you Melissa for sharing your talents and for being a special part of our wedding day - we'll never forget it!
From the first time we spoke, we knew Melissa was the calm, confident presence we needed for our wedding. She had a great portfolio, which included smaller weddings like ours, so I was sure she would capture our day perfectly. She handled everything like a pro, making everyone feel at ease and keeping things organized so she could get the shots we wanted. When we received our photos (way faster than anticipated!), they were just perfect and captured our favorite memories of the day and more. We would absolutely recommend working with Melissa to anyone!
Melissa came highly recommended from a friend, and after a quick chat with her, her fun personality and professionalism came through very clearly. She was extremely easy going and flexible when it came to time and location, even when it was last minute decisions being made. Her photography style and fun demeanor made our surprise engagement photo shoot a breeze - she was key in both staying hidden and capturing the perfect moment for us. She is a true professional and was a joy to work with
Working with Melissa was a breeze! Our engagement photos were wonderful, she made us feel very relaxed. On wedding day, she was great at capturing action moments and planned shots - even all the portraits on the altar at the church (the most stressful ones). Melissa's style is evident in her work and it lead to great results!
Melissa came recommended by a recently married friend and we couldn’t be more pleased with our experience with her. Her photographs are beautiful and she was very easy to work with, very personable. Highly recommend working with Melissa for wedding photography- beautiful results and a painless process.
When Andrew proposed to me, I knew right away who I'd ask to be our photographer; Melissa of course! We had traveled to Chicago from California in December 2017 and I thought it would be fun to have photos of us taken while we were there. (Because why not! hehe) I did some googling and I found Melissa. I loved her style and reached out. She did a couples session for us and we had a blast at the windiest spot in the city that day! We really loved the photos she took too. So naturally she was the first one I thought of to photograph our elopement style ceremony after Andrew proposed. We knew we wanted to get married some place on the coast and ultimately decided on Cannon Beach, OR. I emailed her asking if she wanted to come to the west coast and the rest is pretty much history! We invited her to stay with us in our super cute Airbnb for the trip! It was a lot of fun just hangin' out chatting with her outside of the ceremony and photo work that she was there to do, and I think that was special thing for us to share with her. Not all couples have the luxury of their photographer getting to know them on a more intimate level like that over the course of a few days and I'd like to think that helped her really capture not just our ceremony, but also who we are as a couple. She and our videographer worked so well and they made magic with their crafts. I'm so incredibly grateful to have the beautiful and emotive images she took for us. I really appreciate the details she captured and the story she told of our day through the photos. I'm pretty sure it goes without saying (at this point) that Melissa has my highest recommendation! Working with her was effortless and it felt like we were hanging out with a friend the whole time! We still wanna karaoke with her too! So someday... either whee we go back to Chicago or if she comes to Northern California!
I have been told over and over that my wedding photos are some of the best my friends and family has ever seen! Melissa flies under the radar on the wedding day (adding no stress to your day -- she actually reduces it!) and follows up with the most beautiful photos imaginable. If you're having any reservations, don't! Her style of shooting and editing is so unique - and she is so personable too. I would recommend her x a million!
Beautiful, natural, just-right moments captured with a quiet, fierce grace...
Melissa Ferrara of Iron & Honey has an art and zen that is so refreshing and rare. And if that wasn't enough, her demeanor, professionalism and fun-loving, down-to-earth personality made pre-wedding "meet-ups", engagement pics and the actual event a dream. So where did we find this gem of a human? My husband and I were referred to Melissa by a very good friend who had worked with her in the past. From there we scheduled a coffee-date to chat through ideas and prepare a timeline and quote. My husband and I both love photography... so ensuring we had the right fit for our wedding photographer was something we put a lot of weight on. Having checked out her portfolio prior to our coffee date we knew we loved her style, but our official in-person meet-up put all our anxious feelings to rest.
But then... it got better. We scheduled our engagement photoshoot on a windy day in April... we were going to scrap doing them, but Melissa mentioned it would be a great test run of shots for our wedding and way to get to know each other / get comfortable behind the lens. DO THIS... Out shots are so simple, so brilliant and it was fun to share a warm-up beer with Melissa before the shoot.
And then came the wedding. Melissa managed to eloquently wrangle our 16+ wedding party, taking classic, stoic and hilarious photos all in the same hour. After seeing the full array of shots following our wedding, our expectations were not only matched and surpassed... we were blown away. I've attached a few of my favorite snapshots herein.
My husband and I (and all our guests!) recommend Melissa Ferrara of Iron and Honey with the upmost confidence and highest of praise. So much time and energy goes into planning what amounts to an 8 hour (+/-) event. Make the most of those memories, photos are forever -- hire our girl, Melissa... we are so happy we did.
