Jack is very thorough and seems to care about his reputation a lot, which is a good thing. However, he initially came off as cocky in our conversations via email, not always a bad ...thing, but not a great first impression. Overall, he was a good DJ, but did not live up to the hype he creates for himself. Here are my main complaints:
1. He INSISTED on our final meeting before the reception being over a video call, which I had to do during our rehearsal for the wedding(our wedding was a different day than the reception), so I did not get to partake in my own rehearsal because even though he insisted, and only had limited days/times he could have said call, he was still about 10 minutes late getting on the call. Then, while there was one thing that we ended up changing for the reception, it was 100% something that could have been addressed via Email rather than the insisted upon video call.
2. He was late to his own calls not once but twice. The first call we had to completely reschedule because he just never called at the agreed upon time. The 2nd was for the final video call.
3. He put a LOT of pressure on me to give a "welcome speech" to the guests, which I told him originally we weren't going to do because my mother was going to address it in her speech, then I agreed to when he kept pushing it. Then during the actual reception I told him my mother would be giving it rather than my husband and I (because we both have social anxiety, so my mother volunteered) he actually tried to insist my husband and/or I do it and gave a look when I told him otherwise. This, to me, was very unprofessional. If a client says no to something, or that something is to be done a certain way(within reason), that should be the end of it.
4. He just wasn't as good as he makes himself sound. I feel that any other professional DJ would have done the same job, and while I understand his "no cheese" philosophy, he could have interacted with the crowd at least a little. The most he did was when he HAD to for things like the garter toss and such. He did have a fun idea for the garter toss, however I believe even that should have been something we discussed BEFORE the reception, not something he suggested/asked me during the reception. My answer beforehand would have been different than the answer during, due to my anxiety.
Something I think he should definitely give more thought to is how pushy he is about the things he believes should/shouldn't happen during a reception and he needs to maybe do some learning on dealing with clients who have things such as anxiety since his entire profession is dealing with people.
5. Perhaps my biggest issue is that he played (nearly)ALL of our personal requests in order at the very beginning of the reception. My husband suggested maybe because they weren't "dancing" songs, but regardless of what the DJ's personal taste is on what is or isn't a "dancing" song should not come into play. I missed some of my favorite songs as well as some that are special to my husband and I, because we had to go out to take sunset photos and the DJ didn't disperse the songs at all, aside from a couple that were more upbeat.
Overall, he was a good DJ, but just that. Good. Not great. Not excellent. He played good music, but any DJ could put together a list from our generation of music the same way. He is not a terrible price for a professional DJ, but I don't think he was worth how much we paid. I'd choose someone else(friendlier) in a redo.
