I don’t typically leave reviews, but I felt compelled after the experience we had. While the wedding venue itself was visually beautiful, the coordination and client treatment behind the scenes were extremely disappointing. Communication from the coordination team was inconsistent and, at times, completely unresponsive—especially toward some of our vendors.
There was a serious issue with the ballroom assignment that didn’t match the space we had toured or the guest count we submitted. When we questioned it, the explanation we received didn’t align with the facts and came off as presumptive and dismissive. Concerns were not handled with professionalism or care, and the overall tone of the communication left a lasting impression—one that no couple should have to carry into their wedding day.
It’s unfortunate, because the venue had real potential. But the experience from a coordination and service standpoint fell short of expectations, and I wouldn’t recommend it to others based on what we went through.

I had my wedding on August 23, 2024, at the Governor’s Ballroom at the Sentinel Hotel. Our experience with Jake’s Catering was unprofessional and disappointing.
Early in the planning process, we mistakenly booked the Grand ballroom due to a mix-up in venue names. The representative who knew we had toured the Governors Ballroom and that our guest list of 250+ people wouldn’t fit in the Grand Ballroom never clarified the mistake. When I questioned why no one clarified this major error, the representative told me it was “because of budget.” We had never once brought up budget concerns. As a Black couple, the assumption felt loaded and inappropriate—and that moment shaped the rest of our experience.
From that point forward, communication from Jake’s was dismissive and inconsistent. One of our vendors had to reach out to me directly, complaining that the sales rep was not responding to her. Another vendor, who had worked with Jake’s in the past, noted she had never seen them treat a client this way. The difference was clear.
The situation escalated when the same representative—who had already been cold and difficult to work with—falsely accused me of being “aggressive” towards her during a walkthrough she did not even attend. That was not only untrue, but harmful. It reinforced a tired, familiar narrative often used to discredit Black clients when we advocate for ourselves.
When I raised these concerns with management, I was dismissed and received defensiveness. And after I posted a detailed review about the experience on google the review was quietly removed without explanation.
I’m sharing this here because no couple should have to experience this kind of coded behavior while planning one of the most important days of their lives. Our wedding was beautiful in spite of this vendor, not because of them. Think carefully before trusting them with yours.

My husband and I used the Renaissance room for our ceremony, which was absolutely beautiful! We held the reception across the hall in the Grand Ballroom. The entire process of planning our wedding with Jake's at the Sentinel was a breeze. Everyone there is so helpful. Our coordinator, Diane helped so much with the set up and offering recommendations. Our day of catering team was amazing and so helpful. There are so many perks that come with renting this venue, I highly recommend getting married here!

We just had our wedding ceremony and reception at the Sentinel Hotel and everything turned out perfectly. The hotel itself is beautiful with lots of unique and ornate rooms. This was nice because we felt that we didn’t have to bring in a lot of decorations since the building stood so well on its own.
But what really made the whole wedding such a success was the fantastic staff at Jake’s Catering-
We worked with Diane from our first visit to the Sentinel all the way through our wedding day. She was extremely helpful and answered all of my (many) questions quickly about venue costs, catering options, day of logistics and everything else that went into our Wedding planning. She made everything easy and is so friendly and professional! We really appreciate all of the work you put in for our event, thank you!
The banquet staff was amazing! I was blown away by their professionalism and kindness. Russ and Vesna were our Banquet Captains for the wedding and they both magically appeared anytime something was needed. They brought us snacks and drinks while we were signing our marriage license. They made our plates and refreshed our drinks during dinner. We heard afterward that they even went out of there way to get a special dessert for one of our young guest who was allergic to nuts.
But the whole banquet staff was awesome as well. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The bar staff was awesome and kept the drinks flowing. The wait staff was quick, friendly, and helpful the entire night. It was top notch service all around. OH! And they were so helpful with all of the day of delivery and day after pick up logistics! Thank you to the whole team who helped pull everything off without a hitch!
And I haven’t even got to the food yet… the reception dinner turned out perfectly! Everything was delicious from our appetizers to our mains to our late night snacks. I wish we could order more of the braised beef short ribs, tortellini, and late night nachos for dinner tonight!

Everyone on the Jake's team was easy and fabulous to work with! The food was delicious and Governor ballroom is perfect for a big wedding. The Jake's team were thoughtful and patient with all of our questions and ideas for our wedding reception. ALL of the spaces that Jake's has at the Sentinel are beautiful and we ended up taking quite a few wedding photos here as well. Jake's and the Sentinel will always hold a special place for us!

We hosted our wedding reception at the Sentinel, and we couldn't have been happier with the venue and the team at Jake's. Kirsten was wonderful to work with—warm, patient, resourceful, organized, and insightful. We had our cocktail hour in the Renaissance Room and a dinner reception and dancing in the Grand Ballroom, with a total of about 200 guests. The food was excellent, the bartending solid, and the venue beautiful.
We rented an ivory drape to cover the stage in the Grand Ballroom, chiavari chairs, and some gold accents—but no further rentals or external decorations were needed; the space is gorgeous as-is. If you're looking for a classic vibe and a venue that doesn't require lots of external rentals, consider the Sentinel!

Jake's catering at Sentinel was outstanding! We booked the library room for our ceremony and the grand ballroom for our reception. We were also given extra space in the fireside room for our traditional Chinese tea ceremony earlier in the day.
One of the major reasons we picked the Sentinel is because the space is already so beautiful without extra decor, it was the perfect choice for us because on the wedding day, we were astounded by the beauty of the whole space. We also got to take so many "creative photos" around the nicely styled hotel as well.
A huge bonus is the fact that the staff is outstanding. Working with our catering manager Kirsten was an absolute breeze, she was great with replying to emails quickly and modifying our menu and floorplan countless times over our long engagement as numbers fluctuated. She was easily one of my favorite vendors!
In terms of the food, we had several comments about how delicious the meal and drinks were.
We are so happy and grateful to the whole team at Jake's Catering. Thank you!!

We picked Jake's Catering at the Sentinel because we couldn't get over how pretty the rooms were. There was a bit of a snafu in the beginning because they quoted us the wrong price for the rooms due to us needing to take down Christmas decorations for our non-Christian late-December wedding, but once we negotiated this part, everything was wonderful. The food was **delicious.** The rooms stunningly beautiful. They worked with me to set up a custom room block, and the guests raved about the hotel. They were open, responsive, sometimes even anticipating my questions and needs. Really great job, overall.

Amazing wedding experience at the Sentinel. Beautiful venue with lots of great options, and we were able to find the perfect space for us! Julie and Kirsten were great to work with and made everything so much easier for us with great suggestions and planning advice. The whole day was incredible ! I have to say, the food was the best wedding food My wife and I or any of our guests said they have ever had, and I felt the whole thing was such a great value for the money with everything they do for you. Their full service set up and take down of everything relieves so much pressure, and everything they do is top notch. I would highly recommend the Sentinel!

Jakes did an amazing job hosting our wedding. They understood our vision for the day of and were in constant contact throughout the whole planning process. They have amazing staff and everything was perfect! we were very impressed with their professionalism and kindness. Julie and Kirsten were so wonderful to work with. They answered all my questions and eased my concerns. If I had to plan my wedding all over again I would go with The Sentinel every time!

Where do I start? The Sentinel Hotel and Jakes Catering are the best in class! I give them 5 stars in all aspects. I recently got married in Portland, OR and hosted the reception at the Sentinel Hotel’s Governor Ballroom and used their in-house catering: Jake’s Catering.
Let me start from the beginning. During my exploration visit, I immediately loved the location of the hotel. It’s in the most “happening” part of town: the pearl district, where beautiful shops, cafes/restaurants, and “brewery central” resides.
The Venue: I love that the hotel has history to it. The designers who recently updated the hotel did a fantastic job my adding in funky Portland touches while still preserving the historical theme of the hotel.
Everything about the “look” of this hotel is amazing and creates a great theme for a wedding. The Governor ballroom looks like a classic lavish jazz ballroom with 40 ft. ceilings and a ridiculous amount of crown moldings and grand columns. It certainly gives a Wow Factor when you step foot into it.
Hotel Service: several of my guest stated that was the best hotel they had ever stayed in. The service was out of this world. All the staff made us feel so special and welcomed.
Jakes Catering Food and Planning: Julie Weiss, Todd and their banquet teams are catering geniuses. Their level of knowledge in the catering industry is far more superior than the average caterer. They are competitively price, a dream to work with, and executed their food and services better than I could have dreamed of.
All of the catering staff were dressed in sharp uniforms, they set up 2 beautiful bars with twinkling candles all over them. They didn’t miss a mark on the food service schedule. The dinner was a pre-plated dinner with bread/butter and a caprese salad to start, then we went into a chicken and jumbo shrimp dish, and finished off with their signature crème brulee. The whole service flowed beautifully which timed out our event perfectly, not to mention the food was delicious. I had guest comment that that the banquet staff were so attentive it felt like there was one banquet staff per guest. “Every time I was getting close to finishing my drink the banquet personnel topped off my drink immediately”.
Many brides state that planning a wedding can be stressful, but Jake’s catering will help you alleviate your stress. They take care of majority of your setup: chairs, tables, glassware/silverware, candle votives, bar setup, cake cutting, and linen napkins/ table linen (this all comes free when you use their catering).
The planning process with Julie was a blast. My mom and fiancé developed great banter with her, which brought in humor to the whole process, which then turned the planning process, believe it or not, into a FUN process. Julie was professional and personable, she was easy to get ahold of and easy to get decisions made and out of the way. I had some outrageous request and they pulled through (set up times, table count specifics). Their menu tasting and “week of walk throughs” made us feeling like royalty (private rooms, teams of catering staff serving us, meeting the chefs, etc. the whole 9 yards)!
Thank you to the whole team that made our wedding a dream come true!

We had our wedding at the Sentinel Hotel in the Renaissance room and our reception in the Grand Ballroom. Initially we wanted to have an outdoor wedding, but we were so impressed with the beauty and character of the hotel that we chose to have it at the Sentinel. We worked with Julie Weiss, the Social Sales Manager, and she was very helpful and accommodating to our wedding. We saved a lot of money on decorations because both rooms were already beautiful.
The hotel staff was very courteous and professional. They even remembered our names and that we were there for our wedding. They made sure our room was clean and ready for after the wedding. We were given a bottle of champagne as a sign of congratulation.
A high priority for us was the food. And Jake’s Catering delivered on that priority 100%. All of our guests were very impressed by the quality of the food. The catering and Sentinel staff were all very professional, polite, and accommodating. On our wedding, they made sure that the bride and groom were well fed, hydrated, always had a drink in hand. They were very good about saving and setting aside food and desserts for us before our guests ate all of it. We felt very taken care of, despite how hectic it must have been for them with all the guests we had. We would highly recommend going with the Sentinel hotel for a wedding.

I don't know where to even begin with how wonderful our wedding was at this venue. Its beauty made my decor a simple process because it has so much beauty and elegance in itself! Really any additions only compliment what is already there. If you are looking for a grand setting for your ceremony or reception - whether you have a low-key feel or a high-end elegance theme, you will not regret using the Sentinel. The food was commented on with enthusiasm for days and the staff and events coordinator made the process smooth and the least stressful as possible. They are in contact often and always available for questions. I felt like it was a wedding fit for a princess! Thank you for such a memorable day in our lives!

We had our reception at the Sentinel hotel and catered through Jake's. The service and food was great! Everyone complimented us about the food the next day, even my Greek relatives said the Spanikopita appetizers tasted authentic! The one thing I would have liked to change was more choices offered during the tasting. A complimentary room for the bride and groom would have been nice too, other venues did offer that. We had great reviews from friends/family about the gorgeous setting and venue! They are very accomadating and make every detail personalized.

Very romantic setting, the food was great, and the employees were very friendly. Great food/beverage minimum and pricing for room rental for such an elegant space. Surrounding rooms were empty, so they offered us extra space to get ready in and take pictures. Loved it!

We loved our stay at the Sentinel Hotel for our wedding (at Elysian Ballroom, just a few blocks away). The room was beautiful and comfortable, and the service was outstanding from the staff during our stay! I gave the service and value 4 stars because the online and telephone booking services were a little wonky and caused some problems for us and some of our guests and because the Sentinel is a fairly pricey hotel. Overall, however, my husband and I look forward to celebrating many anniversaries at the Sentinel!

Aside from a gorgeous ballroom, dealing with the Governor Hotel and Jake's Catering was a complete disaster on every possible front during the planning phase. Jake's is the furtherst away from accommodating on simple things like meetings and important things like the tasting- we came for a meeting and they had prepared some choices based on their preference. When we asked if we could try some alternatives, they said they were not available until we coincidentally saw the Chef who was actually quite helpful. With that said, the food and service on the wedding day was great.
The service at the Governor Hotel is also terrible- thankfully they were bought out and a makeover to their attitudes is underway.

This hotel is absolutley beautiful. I arranged our entire wedding from Minnesota so I had only seen a few pictures of the Governor online. This hotel was beyond anything I had imagined! All of the staff were so friendly too!

We had our rehearsal dinner in the Library room at The Governor Hotel, with Jakes Catering. The food was delicious, and the waitstaff was very attentive. We would definitely recommend them. Prices are very reasonable. We only had difficulty with communication with their staff prior to the date.

We had our reception at the governor hotel and the events coordinator, Erin, was so helpful with the planning process. Being a historic hotel, the rooms have amazing details. We had our reception in the library room, which was gorgeous. The food was excellent, they did a wonderful job preparing and decorating the room. The night went off without a hitch.
I will mention on the hotel side, we did have some issues with the room block, we had reserved almost all double queens but the rooms ended up being mostly kings. Also they did forget to deliver some of the welcome bags. Overall though, everything worked out and they made an effort to resolve the room issue.

The food at the wedding was different at the food from the tasting. The hors d'oeuvres were really good but the main meals mostly the meats in the meals were not that good. especially compared to the restaurants food and what we at the tasting. but they were very nice and excellent service. In the end I still would have gone with them. I think i had high expectations more because of all their good reviews and the food at the tasting.
