My husband and I never worked with a professional photographer before. We wanted to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary with a whimsical vow renewal and I knew just the type of “eye” I wanted. I just needed to find them. Jason Smelser was that eye! He was great from the start. Responded back to emails quickly (great when you give short notice like me) pricing was reasonable and a great value for what you get. The day of went so smoothly! He gave great direction and indulged us in weird poses we wanted shot. 😂He was a big reason our vow renewal was a day to remember! We are so thankful!

Wow, where to begin!! We found Jason’s blog and IG page and instantly fell in love with his work. Our wedding/Elopement planning was SUPER last minute so we were so lucky to be able to book Jason. He was very quick to respond from our initial outreach all the way through after the photoshoot was finished. He was very easy to plan the session with and offered great ideas for location; he also sent us examples of his work for each location we considered to help us decide. Day of the session, Jason showed up 30 minutes before the arranged time, and crazily enough, we were early too so we promptly got started! He is very easy to communicate with and he make both of us very comfortable. He has his signature shots and poses but also invites and welcomes the spontaneous and memorable moments that are unique to each couple; he captured that for us beautifully! He is professional but also very personable, which we really appreciated! After we parted ways post-session, Jason sent us the blog post to our own gallery with the first round of edits within the week! Now we are waiting for the final gallery which will take a few weeks more, but we know it’ll be everything we wanted for our elopement photos AND MORE! Our family and friends could not be with us on our special day, but Jason has found a way to capture all the precious moments so that we are able to share them with our loved ones.

Working with Jason was so amazing! Originally, we had booked Jason for photography services for a large wedding for March 2021, but when the pandemic hit we had a change of plans. Jason was so flexible and was able to accommodate to our new plan to elope. Communication was seamless, and he was always very quick to respond to any questions I had. On the day of our wedding, Jason was timely and very organized. He had so many amazing ideas, but also listened to our vision. He helped capture exactly what we were going for. He gave great directions on how to pose, where to stand, etc. and the end product was even better than what we hoped for! We are so pleased with our pictures and are extremely happy we were able to work with Jason! As any 2020 bride knows, getting married during a pandemic is no easy feat! My husband and I opted to cancel the big wedding and hold an intimate ceremony at an Airbnb outside of Brenham, Texas. Jason was more than accommodating to these change of plans and was always quick to respond via email. Words cannot express the level of perfection of our wedding photos!!! Jason went above and beyond to make our Airbnb look like an actual wedding venue! His attention to detail, knowledge of lighting, and posing really shine through in his photos. You can tell he is passionate about what he does. He was such a delight to work with. Another thing that impressed me was how quickly he got our photographs to us. He sent a handful of teasers to us literally three hours after leaving without compromising quality and then another 30 or so photos the next day! We received the rest of our photos within the three month time frame and couldn't be happier. He even included more photos than originally quoted for! 10/10 would recommend to Jason to everyone!

We used Jason for our November 2020 engagement photos and he did an amazing job! His photography style is my favorite. He showed up to the session on time, gave us great pointers on how to pose, and knew the area we chose to take photos in really well (Hermann Park). Highly recommend. Our photos came out great. Our friends and family keep raving about how good they look, thanks to Jason.

Absolutely loved working with Jason. We met in person and I could tell that he really loved what he does and it really showed in his work! We booked Jason before COVID and had to change the date, Jason worked with us and was really responsive when we were talking about which dates to switch to. Jason showed up early on the wedding day and was super professional the whole day. He stuck with the contract and gave us all of our edited photos within 3 months of the wedding. And they were all really great and we are so happy with how he captured us and our love on the wedding day! He also sent us a thumb drive and printed out a few of his favorite pictures for us! If we were to do this over again I would definitely book Jason again!!

After seeing Jason’s Instagram, I knew we had to have him as our engagement and wedding photographer. Every single picture speaks for itself. Each picture tells a story. Jason is truly an artist, and he is beyond talented in photography! From the minute I met him at a coffee shop, I was 100% sold. He’s so calm, cool and collected. He listens to his clients. Our wedding was a Persian wedding (Sofreh Aghd), and he asked intentional questions about the ceremony and tradition. He was excited for the challenge of photographing a Persian wedding and I was excited for him to be part of our special day. Jason is absolutely amazing!! After seeing Jason's work highlighted in several "Best of Houston" photography lists and blogs (and of course some Instagram searching), I KNEW we had to have Jason take our engagement photos. My fiancé and I had the pleasure of working with Jason this past October in Evergreen, CO to get our engagement photos taken. Every part of the process was easy and professional. Even when the day of a slight blizzard decided to come down the mountains, he communicated with me the whole time to try to wait it out and possibly relocate. Jason photographed our engagement photos. We found his Instagram and LOVED the dark and moody look. Being photographed doesn’t come easy, so we were a little “awkward” at first. However, once we got into it, Jason helped us feel at ease. Getting dressed up and prancing around downtown Houston during quarantine turned out to be such a fun experience/ impromptu date night. Jason was super responsive while booking the session, and turned the photos around quickly. We were so excited when he sent us a preview the next day. We love love love our photos. An engagement session with Jason was gifted to us. It was a more perfect gift than I could have ever imagined. His photos are perfect. He made sure to balance posed and candid shots for a complete photo album of us! His direction is also great. Before the shoot he chatted with me to answer any and all questions. During the shoot. he will let you know to shift here or there to make sure you will be happy with the results. He also really understands lighting and how to adjust on site. We were actually late to our session due to traffic and he stayed later to make up our lost time, and handled the hiccup with absolutely no issue. I would recommend him for any couple. Jason was the perfect photographer for our alternative COVID-19 wedding! In April, we had to postpone our planned wedding and reception until 2021 but still wanted a couples shoot and legal ceremony in May. This left us with only a couple of weeks to pull something together. Jason was affordable, communicative, punctual, and fun to take pictures with! My fiance and I hadn't gotten the opportunity to do an engagement photoshoot, so we were a little apprehensive about how we would do in front of the camera, but he did a really good job of encouraging us to be ourself and guiding us through the process. 100% recommend.

I can provide the typical notes of professionalism Jason executed: arrived on time, communicated thoroughly, and was respectful of our event, culture, and taste. He though, above all, was able to make us feel comfortable and relaxed to take some of the most beautiful pictures my husband, family, and friends now share. Our wedding at Haak Winery had a variety of settings, mainly outdoor and a darker lit location in the cellar for reference. When you have Jason on your team, have full faith and trust that his artistic eye is catching every fleeting moment. We now have great website and high quality photos along with a USB. (We had his services from 5pm-9pm to capture our big event).

I was so lucky finding Jason last minute to shoot our engagement photos after moving to Houston short notice from Louisiana right before our wedding! I didn’t know any places in the area and he recommended a bunch of places we could shoot. Love, love, love Jason. We were looking for a photographer with a more “moodier” style and we just love his work. We told him our vision and he was very accommodating in incorporating the photos/poses we wanted. Plus being creative on the spot and in the moment was a strength of his. We were in several locations and a lot of those places with people he had never seen until the day of. We had a 20 person wedding party and he was great at handling all of us. Jason’s work was absolutely incredible. When we were looking for a wedding photographer we saw Jason’s website and were in awe of how beautiful his shots were. They were in a league of their own. He went above and beyond for Preston and I and I could not be more pleased with the photos from my bridals, engagement photos, and wedding day. When we looked through our photos from the wedding it brought us both to tears because most importantly he captured moments we’ll carry with us for a lifetime. My mom hires photographers for a living and we chose him and he blew both of our minds which is saying something. He used the most impeccable angles to capture our photos. At first I thought Jason paid off all those reviewers to give him a perfect 5 star rating, I was a bit skeptical at first, but I have to say after dealing with Jason, I think that 5 stars might not be enough! Jason was very understanding and accommodating of what we wanted and had in mind. Quality of his work was fantastic. Jason was spectacular! I am so glad I chose him to be the photographer for our wedding. He was so caring and passionate about his work, as well as his clients. During our engagement photo session (I opted out of the bridal session), he found us the best locations (and I mean THE BEST!) on such short notice since we were only in town for a week (long distance wedding). He was so kind and gentle with the families during the family photos, yet firm so we could move through everyone quickly. It was perfect, because I have a loud, crazy Italian family and I didn't think anyone could ever wrangle them together, but he managed, somehow! Our pictures with our bridal party looked like they came straight out of vogue. Even our venue asked us if they could submit our photos to wedding magazines on our behalf. I was thrilled! The photo book he provides afterward is of THE best quality. I've never had something so beautiful. The pages are seamless (pun intended). His eye for the art of the pictures and the important moments of the festivities are key. In the same package, he also sent me the gorgeous USB drive and case with all of our pictures. Wow! This package was probably the most beautiful thing I've ever received in my 30 years on this planet. If you're looking for someone who is well versed in the art of photography, who understands weddings to a T, and you want the best possible photos imaginable, choose Jason. You won't be disappointed. My lovely friend surprised us with engagement photo Session. I never met or heard of Jason before, but I highly recommend Jason. He answered all my questions before meeting, he was okay with us bring our fur baby and he was on time for our photo session. Unfortunately, I was not able to book Jason for my wedding day because he was booked, however, I was able to book him for my engagement session. Jason was a pleasure to work with from the moment of scheduling an appointment to the day of our session. After looking for photographers online for our engagement photoshoot, My fiancé and I decided on a Jason because of his amazing instagram and website photos and his promptness in responding to our emails with questions. We are so happy we found Jason because it was so amazing working with him. For me it was very very important to have an incredible photographer at my wedding. Someone who could perfectly capture our day in a style that we would love. I found Jason on Instagram and actually started following him for a month before reaching out to him. What I learned during this time was how incredibly talented Jason is! If you have not already, go check him out at @jasonsmelser and see for yourself the most beautiful wedding photos I had come across while looking for a local Houston photographer. Jason's ability to capture not just a moment, but the emotion, his use of lighting, his vision, everything is breathtaking. I love that Jason's photos don't come across as cookie cutter traditional white washed soft wedding photos (you know the kind). Instead his photos are more dramatic and breath taking in a way that many other wedding photographers do not have the ability to capture. Apart from his incredible photos, Jason is also extremely professional. He was prompt in all his communication and perfectly on time for each of our photography engagements. I enjoyed being able to have an engagement session with Jason to get a feel for his photography before our big day and he was very open to all of the specific photos I wanted to make sure to capture. I actually put different photos that Jason took during our engagement session on each of our guest tables during our wedding since I just feel in love with all of them! For our wedding day, we had both Jason and his assistant photographer there and I could not be happier with the photos. I was concerned with the church, since our church does not allow photographers to block the view of any of the people in attendance, but you would not notice this constraint from Jason's photos. He was still able to capture every special moment (even though he was forced to stay behind the last row of pews). At our reception venue, he took advantage of multiple different areas and loads of incredible photos of my husband and me. One of my requests for my wedding day was to ensure that photos were taken of all our guests. On your wedding day, it is hard to remember everyone who attended or what they were wearing, or honestly anything since you are so focused on a million other things. So now I love having all these photos of my guests having a wonderful time at our wedding that I can look back and cherish. Jason actually sent me a preview of our wedding photos the night of our wedding! I am not kidding, the same day as our wedding, he sent us photos to enjoy during our honeymoon and send out to family. Jason was very prompt as well sending us all of the remaining photos and they did not disappoint at all. I honestly cannot say enough incredible things about Jason and his work. His photos of our special day are going to be held close to our hearts forever. Do yourself a favor and hire Jason!

Jason is such a talented photographer and and wonderful person. We hired him for our wedding in October 2015 in Houston, TX--the same weekend a hurricane blew through town. Jason blew us all away with the photos he took of us in the rain. They look like something out of a fairy tale! When Jason asked for couples to photograph in Portland, OR, my husband and I jumped at the chance to work with him (and enjoy a nice vacation for our three year anniversary.) Once again, we were blown away. Between the locations, posing, lighting, and artistic editing, there's not a photo we don't want up on our walls. We hope to work with Jason again in the future! We had the absolute best experience with Jason! He even made it out of Houston to our Colorado wedding the week of Hurricane Harvey. All the photos were amazing, he is so great at both typical “portrait” shots and super artsy shots. Thank you Jason for capturing our big day.

From beginning to end, Jason went above and beyond to make sure my husband and I had the best experience in front of his camera. He didn't make us feel like we were "just another couple". It felt like we had known him forever. If you want to be involved in the creative process, he encourages that as well (communication via social media, email, text etc.) as he will take into account any ideas you may have in order to make your vision come to life, in the photos. For engagement photos he knows what locations work best for the vibe you're going for, he will suggest colors/ clothing to wear that will compliment the photos and much, much more.
