We hired Jay Maxwell’s music by request per the recommendation of our venue as they were on the preferred vendor list. Looking back now and seeing that their most recent review is ...
over 2 years ago and they haven’t posted anything on their instagram in the same amount of time should have been a red flag. But unfortunately, since they came recommended from the venue, I thought all would be okay. I would sum up our experience as just okay. Our DJ was Jermaine (“J”). The communication prior to our wedding day was subpar. The company had gotten multiple things wrong on our contract before I signed it and even after I had already corrected it, it was still wrong. They accidentally sent me another couple’s contract. We had chose to add uplighting to the grand package. But since our time needed for him to play was less than what the grand package offered, he gave us a slight discount, so it evened out in the end with the uplighting. We had our meeting a week or two before the wedding where we laid out everything we wanted and the order of certain things. I felt confident going into the wedding that our expectations would be met. Unfortunately, I was wrong. He did not provide much energy and just kind of sat behind his table the whole night. I was expecting as a DJ for him to energize the crowd and get them excited. There were a few instances where items that we went over in our meeting did not make it to the event. For example, during the entrances to the reception, the bridesmaids and groomsmen as well as us (B&G) were supposed to have specific music we were coming out to. He announced the group and then was scrolling on his iPad trying to find the song that he was supposed to play. There was a very awkward 10-15 second delay of nothing while he was trying to find the song. I don’t think he even played the song we were supposed to come out to. You would think as a professional DJ you would have the music already cued up. He missed a special announcement about my grandparents after the anniversary dance. He played the song that was supposed to be for our private last dance for everybody and then proceeded to tell us and our photographer that we weren’t doing a private last dance. All of these things were discussed in great detail during our meeting before the wedding and were in writing. We were very disappointed that these things were missed. Finally, we were supposed to get the uplighting that was added on to our package and yet, that was not provided. I emailed him a week or two after the wedding to share our thoughts and let him know that we paid for uplighting, but did not receive it. As a business owner, the logical response would be to be apologetic and offer a refund for that service. It has been 2 weeks since I sent that email and he has not responded at all. So that should tell you all you need to know about how unresponsive he is. I know they have multiple DJs in the company. I know nothing about the other DJs and how good they are, but I would not recommend Jermaine. I really hate that I have to write this review. If I had gotten a response and a refund, I would have let it go, but that was not the case.

About a month before the wedding, we were notified who our DJ was (Kevin), and a couple of weeks before, we met up with him and talked about the music and event timeline. Right away, we knew Kevin was going to be awesome. He even asked what our wedding colors were so that he could wear a bowtie to match! He was right on cue with every song for the ceremony, and played awesome music throughout cocktail hour, dinner, and party time. We had guests come up and ask where we found him. He was very engaging with the crowd and would come out onto the dance floor to try to encourage more people (especially the guys) to dance. I worried initially about how we would be able to handle an exit song at our venue, since the exiting area was not by the reception. Kevin assured us he had a portable unit and could simply move it to the front of the building for our exit and we could have our exit song just as I envisioned. I highly recommend Jay Maxwell’s Music by Request. They provide you with a booklet of songs to help you choose your reception and ceremony music, which was helpful. Pricing was very affordable, and there are several packages to choose from depending on your budget. The communication with the owners was easy, and our DJ was awesome. If you’re assigned Kevin, you hit the jackpot.

We had two issues though: 1) We had an in person meeting scheduled with him the week of the wedding and he didn't show up. No call or anything - we just sat there for 45 minutes waiting for him. We had to schedule him again and meet with him right before our rehearsal dinner which wasn't ideal. Then at the event he had a slip of tongue and announced the "Father Son Dance" for my now husband and his mom - which was just a mistake, but my mother in law was a bit embarrassed.

Because it was a destination wedding, I didn't have much time to meet Jay in person before booking his services and really only communicated via email except for one phone call about a month prior to the wedding. His planning guide makes the process so easy and any bride can be confident the day will go off without a hitch, even when you change your first dance song 24 hours before the event! When it came time to start winding down the reception, Jay said he would stay all night because everyone was still having so much fun! He played our initial requests and fielded requests from our guests that went along with our style. Jay is the DJ you want in Charleston, no question.

lt. We met with our DJ Kevin twice prior to our event, once several weeks out to do an initial meet and greet, and a second meeting a week out from our wedding. We highly recommend doing this if you can as it helps breaks the ice and allows whomever the DJ is to get a good idea of what your tastes are. Kevin did everything we could have asked for and was very receptive to our inputs for likes and dislikes. He respected our wishes and ensure the reception was about us and not about a DJ performance. He worked incredibly well with our coordinator at the venue and remained flexible as several changes were made on the fly. Many of our guests commented on how fun our DJ was and how tasteful the music choices were. We would happily use Jay Maxwell again for future events and highly recommend this outfit for your event.
The coordination and communication we received prior to our event was outstanding as all questions were answered in a timely fashion, and there were no last minute surprises. Jay Maxwell's services are an incredible value given some of the other outfits we looked into. We highly recommend completing their initial meeting worksheet and turning the reins over to the DJs since that's what you're paying them to do. We also recommend taking their suggestions seriously as they know the venues and the acoustics so there may be additional equipment needed, as in our case. Again, we were well accommodated with no surprises when it came to the reception.
All in all, if you need a DJ to provide music and help control the flow of your event, look no further than Jay Maxwell's. You'll have a great time as will your guests and your DJ.

In addition, they offered one of the most affordable packages that my husband and I came across in our research, so we moved forward with hiring their company for our ceremony music, ceremony AV (microphones), and reception MC/music. We were initially assigned Kevin Baltimore as our DJ, and our initial meeting with him was great, but shortly before our wedding, he was called away and thus unable to perform at our event! Donna called to let me know the news personally, and Jay himself stepped in to fill Kevin's role. Both my husband and I felt very taken-care-of in that regard, and Jay did a great job on the wedding day - our guests were on the dance floor all night, and he played all of the songs we had requested! At the end of the evening, he also provided us a CD with all of our 'special' songs - processional, bridal song, recessional, first dance, father-daughter and mother-son dances, our last song and exit song. I would definitely recommend Jay's services to other brides who are looking for an affordable DJ option, but don't want to compromise on quality and service.

Then, about 30 days before the event, Mike Bender was assigned as our DJ and we setup a call and walked through all the specifics of what we were looking for: a casual backyard bbq vibe. We sent over a list of specific songs and times for the ceremony which Mike got perfect! We also sent over a list of songs we wanted to hear during the afternoon. They played pretty much everything as far as I can tell! It started pouring rain about half way through the afternoon and Mike did a great job of adjusting his setup location with minimal disruption to the music. We, and many of our guests, danced the night away -- the dance floor was never empty and there was something always being played to get people moving. Jay played some of our personal favorites to sing to (which we and many guests joined in on) and he graciously accepted requests from guests that he built right into his set on the spot. And when he night was over, he presented us with a DVD he had developed of most of the songs played during the evening. Additionally, we had live musicians for the actual ceremony, but Jay provided mics for their performance along with wireless mics for the Officiant and others participating in the ceremony. The sound was flawless! Thank you Jay for all your excellent work on our behalf! I cannot say enough about how pleased we were with Jay and his role as DJ and Master of Ceremonies!

I gave it 2 stars because we weren't thrilled with the DJ, Rhett, who we ended up with. Rhett was great on the phone during our interview and we believed he had understood what type of music and atmosphere we wanted, but I guess he didn't. We told him that we wanted high energy and for everyone to have fun but as soon as we finished our introductions and first dance he went into three slow songs in a row. My sister actually had to go up on stage and ask him to change the song and put something on that people could dance to because no one was on the dance floor. He also never asked us for a must play or do not play list which I thought was odd because I'd always heard that the DJ will ask for that. I guess I should have been more assertive with that, but due to the stress of our wedding having to be rescheduled last minute as a result of a hurricane, I honestly forgot to ask him about it again. I have heard great things about Jay Maxwell and I honestly think that the outcome would had been different if we had a different DJ.

, last song, etc.) to be played and in the back of the book was list of songs to help us figure if we couldn’t decide on song. We met with him about a month before our wedding to go over the song picks we had made. I loved that he played the song we specifically chose for certain parts (ex: original Ghostbusters theme song for bridesmaids and groomsman entrance) to make sure it was the correct version, if there were more then one. He prioritized making sure all of our names were pronounced correctly. The best was when one of our groomsman heard his name and he was shocked Jay said it right. We went over the names phonetically with Jay ahead of time but to see that he actually listened to that and that little bit of excitement we saw in our groomsman was awesome. We did not want a “club” vibe where music was constantly being mixed and Jay was totally great at transitioning to each song as opposed to only hearing 10-15 seconds of a song before it was changed to the next. On our RSVPs we had guests request a song to be played, almost everyone participated and Jay went right along with it! It was so fun seeing peoples’ reaction when “their” song came on! Especially if that person hadn’t been dancing and they would pop right up and just go for it! The volume of the music was also perfect, I have been to weddings where it was just too loud and even the people off the dance floor, were unable to talk to the person right in front of them. Jay was amazing, I wish I had another big party to plan because there is no doubt in my mind who we would hire!

We didn't have a coordinator or MC, so we were nervous about having to keep everything running ourselves. We needn't have worried: Jay managed the schedule for us, introducing toasts, dinner, dances, and the other things that happen during weddings. When he wasn't making those announcements, he stayed out of the spotlight and played music that kept our small crowd dancing until the end of the night. Jay was professional, courteous, and a skilled DJ and MC. We'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a wedding DJ.

I had never done this before but they have experience in the details! We were super pleased with Andy (our DJ). He contacted me several nights before the big day to make sure everything was in order. He played exactly what we wanted. We even rearranged some times last minute and he totally accommodated us without a hitch! We were super happy with it all! Highly recommend this service.
